View Full Version : Yammie NS-1000 replacements
What should I try next?
As much as I love the sound these make they may well have to go. Mrs Mike just can't get on with them :(

Yep, they're pretty red!
She was OK with them for quite a while but regularly gets to hear my old Castle speakers at her sisters house where they now live, and much prefers those. They do sound rather good if I'm honest, and look stunning in real Yew veneer.
So, what next?
I'd like something that sounds at least as good as the NS-1000's but doesn't "look like a baboons arse". It would be good if they were at least as sensitive (90dB/W) and can be bought for whatever I can get for the Yammies.
Frankly, I'm at a loss! :confused:

I replaced my NS1000's with ES14's and never looked back until I heard ATC's a few years later.

Personally, I love the 'baboon's arse' red of the Yammies, as I'm not afraid of introducing colour into a room, unlike what seems like the vast majority of clueless 'safe-thinking' magnolia/blonde wood/Ikea-esque fanboy/girl, imagination-free, loving public with next to no sense of originality in interior design or furniture concepts.
That retort, incidentally, wasn't aimed at Mikey (or his good lady) but the general public I have to deal with daily as an art dealer/picture framer! :rolleyes:

If you like electrostatics, but can't put up with the retro looks (or sound) of the Quad 57s, then IMHO the Martin Logans are a text book example of elegant and tasteful design. It's not easy to design something with a large frontal cross-section so that it does not dominate the room.
Unless of course you have a room with a floor area of half an acre!

I hate that 'tower-tall look of metal mesh and MDF'. It just doesn't suit my aesthetic sensibilities in any way shape or form. Give me a lovely big old Tannoy (not necessarily mine - I'm talking an Autograph or GRF in their original cabinets) or a vintage Celestion/Rogers/Spendor, any day!! ;)

Just in case anyone is wondering... the Red Yams are the only speaker remaining. The others are long gone having been soundly (no pun intended) thrashed by the Yammies.
Actually, the Logans and the ES14's had their plus points, but overall....

One of the AoS experts assures us that speakers only contribute about 10% of a system's sound, so basically anything will do, from Linn Kans to Focal Grande Utopias. You'll barely be able to distinguish between them.

Know what you mean about the Quads. I love the looks of mine. Was very disappointed with the looks of the 63s. Even more so with the 989s. The current 2905s (?) look better, but they're made in China, so that 's a no-no for me.

Bass mostly, Ali. The Logans just had way too much of it, and it was pretty slow/flabby too. A lot of my bass issues are down to the room though... as you know, it's rather box shapped! ;)

Very!
I've yet to hear a cone/dome loudspeaker that can quite match a 'static in that respect. I also love the way 'statics can just 'hang' an almost holographic sonic picture in the air for you to listen into. Lovely! :) Ribbon HF units come very close though, at least to my humble ears.

Keep the Yamahas but have yourself some fun an learn a new skill by trying a reveneering job. It's really not that hard. You (or the good lady) can select a timber of choice. Just be careful & take your time - the world is yer lobster.
I didn't know those NS-1000's came in any color other than black. I think they have a big following in Japan. I was in a (non-audio) shop one day and I heard this music coming from the adjacent room. Nothing unusual, every shop has some bgm playing right?
Well, there was something about it that just made me forget about buying a new shirt and drew me to the source. Then I found the NS-1000's, looking horrible with all dented up grills, scratched, gouged, and faded cabs but making this lovely sound. I never heard any before then. They looked liked they'd been on tour for 20 years, and if I didn't hear them playing I wouldn't have thought much.
Keep the Yamahas but have yourself some fun an learn a new skill by trying a reveneering job.
Nooooooo - sell 'em to me for £100, perfect for my 70's system project, and my daughter will love the colour! :)
What amplification did you use to compare these three, very different, speakers?

Back then, these speakers were very popular (worldwide),and still achieve excellent prices (over 1000 dollars) on eBay.Many radio stations were used them for monitoring.For example,for this purpose it was imported over 1000 pair of Yamaha in Sweden :)

But I didn't get to try every amp with all three pairs of speakers as I didn't have everything all together all at the same time. So various combos over a period of nearly a year.

Marco, I'm not sure you'd get on with leak Sandwiches, despite there being a tweeter there, there's very little treble. the mid's nice though as I remember.
Many sixties speakers were designed for people upgrading from radiograms (the huge 50's things with a bassy, "nice" tone), so the treble was often a touch muted.
Amazing that we've currently gone too far the other way :(

When i ran ns1000's about 15 years ago my ex wife thought they where far to big, and i didn't really like the technical look of the drivers and knobs, i made a new pair of grills, but angled the edges in so the front of the grill was a couple of inches narrower than the front baffle of the speaker.. it looked so much better in my view... the ex was even pleased...
quite easy to make.. 1"+ quadrant cut and glued up..then sprayed it black and covered with black grill cloth...

Good idea. My best friend back home works as an automotive refinisher and they'll paint just about anything as long as you got the cash. And you'll come out with a finish that will make a Steinway jealous.
And in my early 20's I used to also work in an automotive paint supply store. We mixed all of our own colors using special computerized machinery. You may be surprised to hear that a black car is never really just true black paint and the same for white. There could be 7-8 different colors in there as well as some powders. I'm personally fond of black that has a bit of colors and cyan mica in it. Can't tell it's in there even with a magnifying glass, but it gives it that deep, rich, wow look. I think that was an Audi color that bordered between black and a super dark charcoal. There's a thousand ways to do black though. True black it the ugliest thing. Stay away.
If you can find an auto paint supplier you can even take anything in there and they can "scan" it with a light gun and the computer will generate the correct color. Or you could tell them the make and model of a car color you like. If there are like 4 blacks for that model you can open the driver's door and usually there will be a sticker with the paint code on it.
Or you could use that DuPont or BASF stuff that changes to all colors of the rainbow as you walk through the room! :lol:
