Getting a Technics SP10 mk2 up and running

Hi Folks,

Recently joined the forum and looking for some help and advice on getting a Technics SP10 mk2 TT up and running. It was an ebay buy, ex South African Broadcasting unit with just the TT and PSU. I'm trying to find a low/reasonably priced plinth as my first priority and then similar spec (low/reasonably priced) tonearm/cartridge combo.

I'm very new to turntables and don't really have the budget to experiment with lots of combos so I'm hoping for some advice on getting the most out the TT on limited budget, even if it means buying the components slowly by investing more money per component and having to wait sometime before I get to hear the TT.

I hope that makes sense and any tips/pointers to setting it up and finding the right parts would be appreciated.

Hi Bal and welcome to the forum.

Although you havnt heard yours, you'll likely know the SP10 is regarded as a very excellent turntable, hence you pounced.

My advise, (I have one and have been on this journey some years).

I know funds are limited BUT, dont rush it, the SP10 deserves to be done in at least the right and basic fundamental ways, which are.

1. Have it looked over/serviced - These decks are 40 years now. If you want to hear it as it should be heard, then this is first box to tick off. You are in Leicester which isnt far from my friend Angus-Phonomac, basically, he is the man as far as this thing is concerned. Send him a pm (private message) to discuss. At least you'll have an idea of cost to work towards.
2. The Panzerholz plinth is the way to go in my opinion, there are cheaper options, even on eBay but I cant vouch for them sonically - Again, Angus will give you an honest opinion, best approach perspective, especially if you're prepared to be patient and do this steadily / bit at a time. Patience is par for the course in this game - trust me i know, but it pays in the end :)
3. Same regards the arm - Talk to him. If you cant go with one of his excellent tricked Audio Technica AT1010's then ask what other arms he'd put on the SP10 in respect of your budget, that will sound good.

He may well see this and send you a pm that you can then reply to.
