Hello Collective,
I've got an itch to build a beautiful glowing sculpture - I'm looking for some cheap, big, beautiful non working valves whose heaters are still working - anybody got anything that might fit the bill - cheap?

Is this for night time viewing only?

I guess you will be needing some high current filament transformers as well? I might be able to help you there.

I haven't given too much thought yet to the current I'll require, as I haven't got any layouts in mind until I see what valves I can lay my hands on - I was thinking perhaps one BIG valve in the middle, with a ring of something like KT88s around it, with a ring of EL84s and finally a ring of ECC83s or some such...

You will need quite a few valve sockets as well then. I can help you with that as well probably, I have several boxes of used valve sockets of various types.

Your biggest problem is the heater supply. The only practical way is to put each ring of the same valves in series, but you’ll still need a big transformer, for 10 KT88’s you’ll need 63 volts at minimum 1.6 amps.

Another solution may be to use old redundant laptop power supplies. An old Dell 19.5 volt 3 amp PSU would do three KT88’s wired in series for example.

It’s going to be a monster of a thing! I know my wife wouldn’t want something like that in the living room.
