Sony 1970s cassette deck repair recommendations please.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of a repair company that can sort out my old Sony TC-229 1978 cassette deck.
It records great but on play back the right channel is significantly lower in volume and the vu meter shows the same.
I'm assuming that the play back head needs looking at.

It might be one of two things, Dirty switch or Iffy Transistor. Any excessive noise? I have the same problem with an Akai machine i bought. The Replacement Transistors [Better substitutes] came in the post today..

There is no excessive noise... Just a volume drop.

Is that VU meter still weak when recording?

I recorded a test tone with both meters showing 100%. During play back the right meter shows 50% and the audio is quiet by around the same level.

It will be the playback board then. I think there are three transistors per channel.

He repaired the deck and gave it a service and calibration for £120.
Sounds and operates like it was 1977 again. 😂

Hi fullrange, I lived in Teignmouth for almost 15 years until recently. I needed to get my Linn Kan's looked at as the rubber cones had split and he replaced them for me - couldn't have been more helpful. Had a few long chats with him and admired some of the gear passing through too. Will miss having him available now too.
I thought his name was Stuart though?
Anyway, I was recommended to him by Gulliford HiFi in Exeter when I enquired about the Kan's repair there. :)
