Well these came my way due to the dreaded internet, I have lusted after a pair for over 2 years having heard them at a dealers. So a contacted the seller last week and asked if he would be interested in my Ardens[emoji33]. I know a lot of you will say what is he doing, don’t get me wrong the Ardens are a fantastic speaker, but like all they have a tonal trait, and after much listening I realised what I missed.

Anyway we struck a deal, and it involved very little money, the lovely David brought them down to me this morning from the midlands, he is a hifi nut like most of us and has a variety of equipment (no wife), and regularly swaps things around.

He arrived early just after 9am and he listened to the Ardens, he was familiar as he had a pair in the 80’s and liked mine. Then we unpacked and set up the speakers pictured below. I put on half a dozen of my favourite listening tracks and they were just as I expected, very detailed, wonderful separation and soundstage, and very neutral. Reviews have describe them as being unforgiving, that is if the front end or the amp is not up to it you will hear it, also with sublime mid-range and top end, and they have been compared to Majico’s.

My impressions so far is they are exactly as I expected, they are not a large speaker but still manage to produce copious amounts of tight bass, maybe not down to the very low Arden levels but very close, but what they do produce is very tight, controlled and accurate, just what I like. My Allnic amp seems to drive them with relative ease, which is pleasing.

Anyway I am pleased, as is Sue due to the smaller footprint in the lounge.

A friend had a new Kitchen fitted just before Christmas and they miss-cut the Oak worktop, so he ended up with 4.5m of it in his garage. He cut two for his speakers to stand on and did two for me. I sanded them and then sealed and spray Lacquered them black, easy to do. I may cut them dow a little as the we originally cut for the Ardens.

Like most people I am limited with speaker placement and also what my wife deems acceptable. The sofa has to stay there as it cannot go elsewhere in the room. Losing it and putting a single chair there instead is not up for discussion. I have had other speakers forward next to the arms and it made very little difference. Where I sit to listen the centre of the drivers are in clear sight, so hopefully the sofa is not having too much effect.

On a slight thread drift, if your friend cut up the remainder of his oak worktop he could sell the bits to people like me ;)

I could fill the sofa space quite easily as I have two other pairs in the garage, maybe not pure hifi as such[emoji2958], and a pair JBLs. So I have enough for a surround sound system with the Yamaha sub.[emoji3]

My friend is not the sort to be bothered with selling hifi bits unless it was worth his while. So I suppose as the SDOBS (super duper oak bespoke speaker platform) for the bees knees in speaker isolation and SQ enhancement £600 a pair sounds a good starting price.

Let me have your required sizes and will advise delivery time.[emoji23]

Forget the social harmony design, the sound fantastic irrespective of how they look, and I am sure you have plenty of amps to match with them perfectly[emoji6]

Whatever turns you one, personally I would opt for 2 or 3 very good pairs, and in fact if you find the right ones maybe one pair, I would go and list to some WB's Vectors or ACT.One.

Been doing some more listening with these Wilson Benesch Vectors, yesterday and today, and a particular word comes to mind 'Transparent'. What I mean by that is it is as if they are not there, just the music. The detail is actually quite stunning across the frequency range.:yay::)

If i have to explain i will.

Say you are speaking to someone face to face. Record the conversation on the best machine possible & play it back thru a bright sounding system , the tone of the voices will sound different to the original voices, This is what i mean about unnnatural.

Same when i play music thru a Bright system, the brightness some call clarity just does not sound right to me.

I wonder what Marco's take on it is. Afterall he dont use Vintage Tannoys in preference to modern speakers for no reason.Nor his collection of Dittons

Tosh, I know when something sounds right, having played in bands and been in recording studios. No reproduced recorded music is going to sound perfect or how it sounded originally because you are not listening through the same equipment, plus loads of crap is introduced through the recording and mixing process. However when somrpne listens to a recording through a system at home there is as point when it will sounds right to an individual or maybe meets their level of expectation, that is all that matters

No doubt Marco uses vintage Tannoys and Dittons because he likes the way they sound, simple as that. We may like to think that we are striving for a "natural sound" or fidelity, but fidelity to what? At the end of the day it comes down to personal preferences. If we all liked the same thing nearly all the speaker manufacturers would not exist.

And I believe Marco's "vintage" Dittons have had some modern bits thrown at them ;)

My apologies Adrian, Gary Goldmund does not exist. I was making a silly reference to Goldmund, who appear to be taking something ordinary and charging big money.

Perhaps somewhere that makes kitchens may be the place to try :)

Yes but there is a big difference between brightness and clarity.

Brightness in my mind is a raise in treble response, however caused.
Clarity is lack of distortion so not masking any details.
