I bought my PHL5 used just over 3 years ago from Tony Whittle, and have been using it with the valves he had fitted. The manual states the valve compliment as 3x ecc82 & 2x ecc83 and looking at the manual photos they appear to be all JJs.
The layout is 1x 82 followed by 2x 83 in a bank of 3 on the left, and a separate bank of 2x 82, front right.
I'm assuming the bank of 3 is the mm phono stage and the bank of 2 is the Pre section.
Today whilst rebuilding my system after its pre-Kegworth stripdown (found out it was cancelled an hour after pulling it all apart) I decided to have a look at what valves were in there and found the following:
MM stage (?)
1x 12AU7 marked in white lettering Ei Yugoslavia, pins are heat stained gunmetal colour.
2x JJ ecc83S silver coloured pins
Pre (?)
2x JJ ecc802s silver colour pins.
I'm assuming as these where fitted by Tony that the above is a pretty good combo, and I'm certainly enjoying this pre. However as is many an audiophiles want, I'm wondering if I can do better with a bit of tube rolling, in particular the Pre section.
I don't currently use the mm stage as this has been userped by a Tron Seven mm, but could be tempted to utilise.
