View Full Version : Capacitor identification please

Morning all.
You’ll probably confirm that I do have a screw lose when you read this .
I have my Tannoy SRM12x speakers that I recapped back in January with equal value Ansar supersound capacitors , and gave them 3 months of daily usage to burn in but I was never happy with the sq so 2 weeks ago I put all the old capacitors back in and hey presto the magic was back , some had strayed from 6.8uf to 7.1uf ( I tested them all when I initially removed them ) . So I now have all 8 identical nos caps on their way to me ( they’re Philips) but I need to get 2 identical ones seen in the picture, there is no brand name on them , they measure 27mm x 8 or 9 mm and have 2.2 J 100 printed on them ( and the little wave thing )
Anyone know this brand ?
Ps : I am fully aware that I can replace them with similar ones .

They look to me like 2.2Ohm 100v MKT caps. Others opinions may vary.

2.2uf 100v - Most likely polyester.

The difference between 6.8uF and 7.1uF is so small in value as to not be worth bothering about.

I'm a lot better mate, after a fairly radical but brief illness. That's why I was missing for a few weeks.

Yes, that particular era of Tannoys sound wonderful, I'm working on a ten inch variant myself.

Hard to say. I stick with Alcaps on older speakers where I can. They have no snob appeal but just work and don't seem to compromise sound.

Definitely Plessey.

The different sound could be down to different dielectric, are the supersound all polypropylene? As surmised I think the Plessey is likely Polyester.

yes others have confirmed that they’re Plessey and that they’re still in tolerance so I’ll leave them alone now .

I've got (or had) a few that look like that put away for my old B&W DM2s, long since sold. I was told they were NOS. Don't know the values.

I can have a look but they'll be hard to find. I remember paying a few quid each, I guess they are now sought after for this very reason

Sent from my iPhone using TapatalkFutile to find them or futile to change them? I probably still have mine, I just need to empty every box on the cupboard and under the bed to find them! Then check their values, but Plessey rings a bell in remember looking them up at the time, they were taken over by Marconi or something.

Aluminium conductors, Copper leads but can be ordered in Silver, Polyprop dielectric I have always used Ansar cos they sound great & look Military grade & dont look out of place replacing the old Elcaps in vintage Crossovers.
