ffks gets worse every year. What get up my crack is they charge you £91.80 for Adult Social Care. Nothing you can do about it. So you are paying that every year even though there is a slim chance you will never need it. Taking the piss if you ask me.
Got mine in too as chance would have it.. Well yesterday. Its been in quarentine for a day. Git rent increase too. Lol

I think we're paying for all those getting it now. Because all the national insurance they earned was spunked up against the wall on some pointless shit the second they paid it in. As is ours.

Like the taxes you pay that supports the NHS, Police etc. Maybe you won't need that either. Could also mention education but I presume you have had the benefit of that although I have no evidence for it.

Is it listed for demolition ? ;)

Hurts your sale value too. I think the row of terraces I live in should be listed but I'm not going to do anything about it. Not because of the money thing, but just because I can't be arsed.
They've knocked down a lot of unique terraced houses here, that dated from late Victorian to Edwardian. And put up modern low rise flats that look like they landed from Mars. Criminal really.
Is it listed for demolition ? ;)
Ha - good one! No, that's your bedroom, daftee, as it never sees any 'action'!
Marco.

Perhaps it might with some properties, but much would depend on how desirable the whole place was to the buyer, including the area.

Seem to pay more each year and get less back.
Makes me laugh when the local council says it collects our garden waste for free as it is not included in the tax.... so what I pay must be for the missed bin collections and the waste they drop during their collections ;)

I really understand folk like New age travellers that do not want to be part of the system cos The amount of money the Tax man, NI & Council take from you it often begs the question why do we bother working our nuts of day after day
Come the revolution
Either that or put up with it and keep voting for the same bunch and asking how far do you want me to bend over ;)
We are here to be screwed, that's the way its always been and the way it will always be.
After the revolution we will be screwed by the new lot, see any pattern here.

O there is a pattern but its getting worse these days getting more screwed over. You see now why people that want to be on the dole. A bit of work on the side, they end up better off than the hard worker. Ever wondered why the benefit crew have cars, Mobiles, nice clothes & holidays.
You can't blame them can you, especially when the make it so easy for them to fiddle the benefits system, if you are that way inclined.
Although not everyone benefits from the benefits system, I have not worked for 20 years due to health reasons and don't get a penny from them.
And still pay full council tax, well the wife does
My mate was on a TV programme where, as an expirement, his street didn’t pay council tax. Instead they had to provide all their own services from private companies etc. At the end they were all in agreement that the tax bill was good value.
No economy of scale with just one street though.

Over the last decade local authorities have had their core funding from government cut by £16 billion or 60p in every pound they used to get. So you wonder why Council Tax bills are goiing up while the quality of services are in decline? As to adult social care, its main purpose is to support vulnerable and frail adults to live as independent a life as possible. That includes people with learning difficulties and long term illnesses. So you begrudge help for these people and maybe respite care for young carers who support them? This is what makes our society a good place and if a few scroungers take advantage then so be it, it's a price worth paying.

So you've been lucky enough to work most of your life, can pay your way, but are extremely unhappy, because of said fact...but put the shoe on the other foot and imagine just for one second of your perfect life, if you could not work for one reason or another, would you take advantage of the system so you could have some sort of existence and or quality of life????..

Andre, I normally find your posts amusing, in a car-crash Jeremy Kyle sort of way, and your knowledge/experience of things vintage enlightening, but this Coronavirus is serious stuff, which quite a few AoS members and their loved ones are rightly concerned about. A bit more sensitivity wouldn't go amiss.

So why bother being a member of this community?
Over the coming weeks/months more and more people are going to have to rely on support from government at various levels. Would you begrudge them this? Chances are some members here will get ill and I hope they will look to AoS for some moral support at least. I'm guessing you would find even that difficult to provide.

Yeah, I think that's a valid point, so I'd ask everyone to bear that in mind, as I know you're just being honest. However, in order to be fair, I also have to ask you to express your honesty a little more considerately, and in a less provocative way, liable to cause less offence to others who think differently.
It's called 'give and take' - and it applies here to *everyone*

Seems to me that you have a problem with back stabbers, in turn becoming extremely defensive, and only believe in yourself. Well me being one of the "you lot" from "behind a keyboard as always" sincerely hopes that nothing befalls you, so you don't have to experience the well intentioned help, from anybody, however, should anything befall you, which I'm sure nothing will , the services that you need will be there, which I am sure of. atb Andre..Al...

Of course you are entitled to your views but given you have chosen to express them here isn't it also fair that people (like me) are allowed to express their views on what you have said? If I agreed with you I presume you'd have no problem. Incidentally adult social care has been the responsibility of local authorities long before you were born but it is only in recent years that it has been a requirement to show it separately on Council Tax bills.

100% Ian. However the key word is tolerance. Therefore, no matter how much you disagree with someone else's views, as long as they've been expressed politely, then you must show tolerance towards them, and if necessary, defend your contrary point of view with equal politeness.
*That* is how we expect everyone here to behave, on any thread:)

Actually I think on the whole I have been very tolerant. I've tried to put an alternative viewpoint to Andre's but if you consider that intolerant then perhaps you should ban me. I have tended to avoid some of the sillier threads that develop on here, sticking to hifi related topics, but I couldn't let this level of intolerance to others as expressed by Andre pass.

Council tax mmmm it's a big chunk of money to pay, there are many people who through no fault of their own will not be able to pay it for a while, unreal situation.
Indeed, Chris, but equally the councils will know that and make provisions accordingly, and of course the government are also offering assistance to those struggling financially.
The bottom line is that no-one is going to be hounded to pay bills that they can't pay, as a result of Corona Virus, so anyone in that situation simply needs to contact the organisations and companies that they pay money to, explain the situation [communication here is the key], and allow them to provide the necessary help, plus also take advantage of the financial support being provided by the government.
One way or the other, folks will get through this, and it'll all be fine!
Marco.
Yes, but maybe not all folks. :(
I have concerns for my parents, who are in their later years of life.
If anything happens, I can’t go and see them.
Sure, but I was referring solely to the financial, not health side of things, Kevin. Are your parents struggling to pay their bills, or are you just concerned for their health? And are they in the UK?

I am not so sure. I have spent the morning looking at the various benefits available. JSA, ESA, the ubiquitous universal credit system and so on. Due to my own personal health circumstances I receive ESA, if my wife looses her job then she would either need to claim JSA or UC, now here’s the rub as I understand it, claim UC and you are immediately likely to loose the ESA even though your partner does so, and as far as I can determine UC is the only route to support related to Coronavirus at present.
So IMO it is really not simple, I am reasonably intelligent and find it an utter minefield, so much so that a trip to Citizen Advise is probably needed before making a bad move short term or long term.
As for not paying bills I would be very careful not paying council tax, it is a criminal offence and they pursue it vehemently.

If you don't pay council tax worst case you get a CCJ and an attachment of earnings. No prison.

JSA was the plan if she looses her job. My point was that as it looks as it stands now you are fed towards Uni Credit to get any Coronavirus support, and this can have a serious detrimental effect on what you get and can claim longer term.
Guys, you don't just not pay bills! Where did I say that?
You CONTACT the companies/organisations you pay money to, for various different services, such as your local council, and advise them that you're in temporary financial difficulty because of the Coronavirus outbreak, which of course they'll be well aware of, and AGREE a mutually acceptable plan to address the situation, based on the help that legally they have to provide, or what is available from the government.
That will then stop the system from chasing you up for the money you owe, *providing* that you comply with the proposals you've agreed - and you do the very same with everyone else you normally pay. What you don't do is force yourself into work because there's 'no other option', and risking your own health or spreading the virus, if you want to pay your bills. As outlined, there *are* other options available, even if they're not always going to be straightforward.
The key, however, if CV is causing you financial difficulty, is to COMMUNICATE with the people you pay, advise them of your current situation and discuss a way forward, not simply just bury your head in the sand.
Marco.

Unless I missed something Marco I don’t think anyone was suggesting not paying their bills or meeting their obligations.
The unprecedented income loss that lots and lots of people in society are likely to face is unlikely to be short term. So for any one actually being able to know what is reasonable or sensible to be able to commit to financially in the future is probably impossible, just as it is impossible at present to predict when the covid-19 will be beaten.

Hi Adrian,

See highlighted text below, where first *you* quoted me, and then brought up the subject of not paying bills:

That's what I was referring to. Where did you get the idea of non-payment from? It certainly wasn't from me.
As for the rest, yes, no-one said it was going to be easy, but the fact is that many THOUSANDS of people will be financially affected by the current situation, due to something that has been totally out with of their control, and so allowances will be made for that as far as possible.

I think you may have misunderstood what I was saying Marco, although I may have not been clear and did not mean to imply that you were suggesting people did not pay bills.
I was trying to say to people generally that not paying the council tax bill is not a good way to go as it is the one that is perused hard if not paid, and as you say whoever you owe money to you need to discuss with them to determine what can be done.
The issue as I see it for a lot of people is that if they loose their income and are forced on benefits of whatever sort is that payment of the CT bill may be a huge chunk out of what they receive. There is Council tax relief for those on benefits in our case with Sue claiming JSA (hopefully not) and me receiving ESA then we would get a £47 a month reduction off the CT bill, taking the monthly amount down to £200 a month, not a lot but it helps. By the way the remainder CT to pay is 23.6% out of the benefits received, a big chunk
No problem, Adrian. It was the "As for not paying bills" bit, which suggested you were referring to someone who'd brought up the subject, and as you had quoted me, that's how I drew the conclusion you were referring to me:)

The key, however, if CV is causing you financial difficulty, is to COMMUNICATE with the people you pay, advise them of your current situation and discuss a way forward, not simply just bury your head in the sand.
Marco.
This is such vital advice.
I have once been in the position of not being able to keep the mortgage payments up through redundancy. Communication is more than vital, it is essential.
These organisations would rather you sort a way to continue, albeit it with a delay or reconfigured payments, than be forced into repossession.
Don't put off contacting your provider, they are human after all.

I think more awareness is needed to what people should do, many are confused and worried that they will be forgotten about and left to it!
God I hope it does turn out alright Marco, I'm just concerned that the government have not acted decisively enough, it feels like the ship has sailed? If we end up like where Italy is at the moment?

That doesn't make things any clearer. Thing is, it's Tuesday afternoon, I'm normally hard at work with my idiot side on standby. Might make more sense after I've had me tea
Farmer Giles is Cockney rhyming slang for piles, schoopit!:D
Often shortened simply to 'farmers'.
You Northerners...;)

I know all that, I just didn't understand Chris's question, nor Macca's reply
On a related note Marco, are you a bag of crisps this year?
Lol - you've lost me on that one!:hmm:
Care to elucidate?:)

Yes, I'd like to see it again actually.
I liked the sordid and grimy character and of course, the dreadful stupidity.
I cannot stand that film - didn't find it the least bit funny. :sofa:
Never even heard of it, let alone watched it!!:D

Not something i would waste electricity watching
What I always find amusing is how folks quote these supposedly 'famous' lines from TV shows or movies, automatically presuming that everyone else will be aware of them and 'get' the joke, or whatever!!::doh::D
Clue: 'famous' (or well-known) is often only that which inhabits *your* world.

Just to let you know you catch me doing that it will be from A Clockwork Orange'
Viddy Well
:D
Lol - no worries. The thing is, I almost *never* pay attention to lines in films, just as I almost never pay attention to lyrics in songs!
When it comes to music, I'm a 'tunes & rhythm' guy, and when it comes to movies, it's the SCENES (action-wise or otherwise memorable) that stick in my mind most.
So even with my favourite films, which I've seen a 100 times, I would struggle to remember anything any actor had said in them!!:D
Marco.
P.S Save perhaps the very famous 'one-liners' from The Godfather movies, Jaws ('we need a bigger boat', etc) or The Shining ('Here's Johnny'). Anything more 'obscure' than that, forget it!!
It's 'Here's Johnny' - as in Johnny Carson show. But carry on...:D

And that's why so many of these "famous" quotes go right over your head!
When I read through some of the threads elsewhere in this forum, covering technical aspects of our hobby, I don't feel moved to question everything that's said or complain about it because that would at worst ruin the thread, or at least wind everyone up! Similarly, you may find topics in Abstract Chat which are unknown to you. You may have to accept that you will never fully "get" everything.
A bit less car chases and big explosions, and more films with memorable, quotable dialogue may eventually fix things :)
Unlike Marvin, your brain won't be the size of a planet*, even though it looks like it from the outside :ner:
*An oft-used statement from Marvin in the "Hitch hiker's Guide to the Galaxy" before you ask :)

You're absolutely right, but you can only like what you like, or know what you know! So as for the bit in bold, I'll be sticking with my 'usual suspects'!:ner:

Watched the first three Dirty Harry recently on TCM. They must have cleaned them up or something because they look fantastic. Seen them all loads of times over the years but they always had that 'Seventies' look to them. Got the first one on DVD and it has that look. But on TCM HD they look like they were made this year. The background music sound quality is really good too.
Yeah I know what you mean, and I'm sure it happens. However, I thought you'd have preferred them intact with '70s patina'!:D
That super-rich/vibrant colour palette is one of the things I love about watching old Westerns! Valve-powered TV cameras are great...;)
Marco.
They were released a good while ago on bluray. Maybe was those
Maybe so. If you've got TCM HD check them out. I was amazed. Like watching them for the first time.

Well there are a couple of questions you've clearly been afraid to ask, but I'll answer them anyway:
1. Yes it has cleared up now.
2. No, you'll be fine, I wore a condom.
Hope this puts your mind at ease :)
Nearly... One last question though:
Did you enjoy it?:D
