Hello from the North!

I've gotten into this audiophile game rather late and on my quest to find info on a good budget DAC I was shoved in this direction!

In past years I had been a bit of a PC enthusiast, no problems at all spending a small fortune on graphics card or processor that wouldn't be worth a packet of chocolate buttons in 6 months But those days are gone and you need something to fiddle with and upgrade, right?! It keeps your chest hair lustrous!


I'm going to have a good lurk and then ask some rather stupid questions!

... aha I was just having a look at the "Differences between digital transports" thread. I'm clueless about which connection from PC to DAC is best.

My first name is Neil, and my rather humble system is made up of an Auzentech Prelude pci card, Cambridge Audio A5 amp, with Mordaunt Short 902s on Atacama Nexus stands. I've got some AKG 702s, Goldring NS1000s, and Grado sr80s running from a Neco Soundlab headphone amp.

The musical taste part is much harder to answer. It ranges from folky acoustic stuff, movie soundtracks, bass heavy electronic music, metal/punk and it's offshoots and even some Pop on occasion. I could be here all day, but to try and some it up. I do seem drawn to a lot of obnoxious, dark, depressing, angry music made by malcontents for malcontents, that sometimes prides itself on how "crappy" it sounds. I think the only genre of music I haven't managed to gel with, is Reggae, though I do like some of the ambient, more modern sounding dub.

I love and listen to this kind of stuff regularly

Love your part of the world was over in Inverness last September Stayed in a cottage above the bridge to the Black Isle. To be honest we usually take the south shore road (single track with passing places) along the loch as you can in places get down close to the water as there are beaches there, not further along and the North shore has none.

Excellent photos, and not entirely unfamilar... it's amazing what the local fungus will do to bored teenage highlanders that don't have a natural affinity with dirtbikes or sheep worrying!

About knowing any natives with speakers in that league(I had to google them... wow), sadly no.

Those are great, too. The good thing about this part of the country is you can be in a "city" one minute and the middle of nowhere the next and there's always something nice to look at in stone throwing distance. Something I should do a lot more of!

I'm curious about the shady goings on at Drumnadrochit myself!
