View Full Version : So what is Roon and why do I need it?

Any Roon experts out there can help in explaining what Roon is / does?
I’m relatively new to this whole Streaming malarkey using a Raspberry Pi 2 B with the Hifiberry Digi Pro Board into a Khadas Toneboard DAC.
I currently run Volumio on the Pi which I then stream Tidal through currently on the ‘My Volumio’ free trial so before I subscribe to this properly I’m wondering if I should buy Roon instead and what benefits there are over my current set up?
I use the Volumio App on my phone 99% of the time rather than through my Mac so is this an option with Roon or is it Mac / PC based?
mac/pc based but your phone can be an endpoint or remote.

Ah OK, I think it’s a no from me then as don’t want to always have to have my Mac on to play music

Shame, you'd be missing out on something really special.
All the info you'll ever need here:
https://darko.audio/2018/07/a-short-film-about-roon-in-three-parts/
Could have a mac-mini running in the background somewhere?

Couldn’t have put it better myself.
The best music platform currently available. Subscribe to Tidal or Qobus and the choice of millions of tracks are in the palm of your hand at astonishingly high Resolution format.
To Bypass this would surely be a mistake.
Roon works fine with the Raspberry Pi / hats. If you don’t want to keep firing up the laptop, Just get yourself a cheap NUC and use your phone as the remote.

OK so I've downloaded the free trial on my Mac and using my phone as the remote. I'll see how I get on with it over the next 14 days before deciding between that and Volumio.
Only downside I see is having to have my Mac on all the time I want to listen but as you say I suppose I could keep a little Mac Mini running somewhere if it becomes an issue.
Seems more unstable than Volumio though currently with a lot more signal break up - any suggestions what could be causing this?

Also the Roon Remote on my iPhone keeps losing connection to my Mac - just keep coming up with Lost Connection.

there is a fix for that.. you have to put in the ip of core. theres a bit you tap on screen when no contact to put ip of core machine.. it will work after that

Two things
1. Hopefully your using cable connection to your laptop and not Wi-Fi.
2. You need to download Roon Sever to your laptop and the Roon app to your phone or iPad.
Finally, do you have a Tidal subscription? Not mentioned previously.

1. MacBook Pro is using a wired connection
2. Roon is running on MacBook with my iPhone running the Roon Remote app
Yes I have a Tidal HiFi subscription which is integrated into Roon.
Another question I have is that although it’s running through my Pi, the software on the SD card in the Pi is Volumio so surely it’s connected through that software anyway so still struggling to see where Roon comes into the whole system, what’s it actually doing?

You can use the Pi as a roon end point (apparently) and you can even use volumio if you don’t mind applying a couple of lines of code into the pi’s Linux system. https://darko.audio/2017/08/a-e65-roon-endpoint-for-the-kef-ls50-wireless-or-any-usb-dac/
I’ve never used Roon, so don’t know how good/useful it is, but might be worth a go while your still playing with your free MyVolumio?

When playing music in Roon it gives the signal path so you can see what's going on.
Mine for instance says
Allo Katana
Source - Tidal FLAC
Authentication - MQA 44.1 kHz
MQA Core Decoder - to 88.2 24bit with MQA signaling
Volumio - Roon advanced Audio Transport
Allo Katana - ALSA
Yours might not say exactly the same (depends on what your playing) but its trying to provide the best possible listening configuration.
Obviously, it would be more advantageous to use Ropeee, (on the Pi) as this a a recognised end point software but Volumio works equally as well.

Not sure why it’s playing via Airplay however - how do I get it direct via the Pi?

I’m now steaming an MQA quality file but still I don’t get the whole AirPlay thing at the end of the info trail?
Surely this defeats trying to stream in higher quality?

Don't worry, it's showIing low quality because your playing an MP3 FILE.
Switch to a FLAC file in Tidal and that will change to high quality lossless.
I'm assuming you have your DAC plugged directly into your high fi (preamp)?

So the path goes my Raspberry Pi 2 B with the Hifiberry Digi Pro Board into my Khadas Toneboard DAC via Coax cable then into my integrated amp

08-03-2020, 14:53
Ah.... Now with MQA Files that's a whole different matter as you need a DAC with the specific MQA hardware chip.
It doesn't mern you can't listen to MQA in roon as Roon will do the first unfold but not the full unfold.
However, as you don't have an MQA DAC, just use Versions and choose the highest bit rate available. (I.e anything Non MQA)

Once initial technical wrinkles are sorted Roon then becomes your fridge...
In the way way it "just works" and you don't need to think about it.
Crying shame to write it off for want of a few teething troubles...sort those and you'll see why folk love it.
airplay max is 16 Bit / 44.1kHz.

shareport is same as airplay, just the name its given to non apple devices i think. so its starting with 16/44 and ending in same. as its apple i dont think it can do higher. a good usb dac on the pc will tho... 16/44 is fine and mostly what you get with tidal etc anyway. ie cd quality..

I think the only way you are going to get away from sharepoint / AirPlay is to change operating systems from Volumio to Rupieee. So Roon becomes your dedicated end point (with no other intervention)
Unfortunately, if you still want to use Volumio (Front end software / App, that won’t be possible.
The Rupieee download install is a breeze and effectively your Pi / hat won’t notice the change. Apart from the fact, it is now a dedicated Roon end point.
if you don’t like it, just power down and put your Volumio Micro sd card back in. (nothing lost.... apart from a bit of time).

Im not too struck on these Music streaming services. I think they are a ticket to any early grave regarding the Hobby we once knew not to mention Music collections. Not a severe as say a Kindle replacing Books. A lot of people integrate into their system but a hell of a lot strip everything source wise back including their music collections for them. I personally know two people that done such a thing as completely sold their Hi-Fi & Collections & just rely on a service their laptop & a pair of headphones.
ive about 1200 albums of my own ripped plus qobuz currently. ripped a few of my records too

Thanks - I'm giving RoPieee a go as we speak but even hitting snags there!
I've downloaded the software, written to it an SD card via Balena Etcher and put the new SD card in my Pi.......and nothing.
The download instructions say it will take a while to boot with the Green LED on the Pi being indicator as to what's happening.
Well both the Red and Green LEDS's have stayed constant lit from the minute I powered it back up about 15 mins ago.

I don't know your exact system but is it one or two power supplies? I.e. Is the Pi and hat powered sperately? Or just power to the Pi?
Ropieee takes about 10 mins to boot. (Much longer the Volumio)

sounds sensational tbh... simple once set up.. a good dac (mine is in the quad amp)connected to lappy or small form pc and your away. just make sure the laptop with core has an ssd for operations as it makes a big difference... a standard hdd is fine for music

There's a single power supply for both Pi and HifiBerry then the DAC is external and runs off another.
I rebooted the Pi and the Red and Green LED's came on and off for a little while now no sign of the Green and the Red is solid lit.
There's traffic from the LAN cable as the Green and Amber lights the side of that are flashing away so I'll wait and see what happens but I'm not holding my breath!

I guess Roon isn't the issue as works fine playing either using my Mac or Phone as output - it when it comes to the Pi that it's letting me down.
I can obviously only get my Pi to operate using Volumio as the software - RoPieee isn't having any of it.
When the Pi is working via Volumio, Roon sees it as endpoint but as per my endless posts earlier, it can only play via this stupid ShairportSync / Airplay which as far as I can see defeats the whole point of having a Tidal HiFi subscription beacuse no matter what I do, I can only play in a maximum of 16/44

Silly question but have you checked the size of micro so needed for RoPiee? It could be a chipset version issue, how old is your Rpi? If I get chance between caring for Sue I will give it a try on mine, Rpi 1. As I would like to try it out.

Sorry to hear that but I guess it's me + the other 10 million users. Rupieee has a very big user Base. (Small by Windows Standards).
If all else fails I'll donate my Pi / Allo Boss as a gesture of good will.
Note.... I have nothing to to with Roon, other than its bloody terrific and can't stand to see so much heartache.

As I would like to try it out.The main issue with Ropiee that I can see is when you write to the mSD card it doesn't name it like Volumio and MoOde that named it 'Boot'
The distro is there but the card is unnamed and it won't boot no matter how long you wait.
Tried 8 and 16gb cards
PS: I've had it running on the same Pi before but that was an older version number of Ropiee, the one that doesn't load is the one listed on the site just now.
Unfortunately I wiped my PC this week and no longer have the older Ropiee to try.
Thanks Mike - I've just downloaded Moode so will try that.
The download is a .zip file - do I need to flash that with Etcher as I did on Volumio and attempted with RoPieee?Remember with MoOde you'll need to SSH into the Pi and add Roon via Linux commands.
It would be easier if you don't know how to do that by getting an older version of Ropiee XL and install that as Roon Bridge is installed at the same time and you just use a web page to enable it and setup Ropiee.

Says a 4gb SD card on the RoPieee site and I'm using a 32gb one. My Pi is an RPi 2

Peter there's no need to donate equipment thank you although I sincerely appreciate the sentiment.
It really isn't that important to me but would be nice t have it working properly.

I'll try and see if I can find an older version of Ropiee as that worked great when I tried it a few months ago, XL version gives you Spotify Connect too which was handy for me.
Don't bin anything just yet we'll get you sorted.

I think maybe I've cracked the possible problem (reading your other posts).
I understand your using a 32gb Msd for the boot drive. I'm not sure if the pi2 can read that size disk with Ropeee or even format it corectely.
All my boot disks are 8gb (No need for bigger).
Anyway, if all the above is tosh... Why not get a Rasberry pi 3+ as they are very cheap nowdays.(Probably less than £30) which will probably solve all your problems.
Do NOT even think about a Pi4 as it will be a new game of crap.
Just a thought [emoji51]

Although I'm using a. Rpi3
If buying another Pi DON'T buy the cheaper Pi 3B+ (2014 on mainboard) as Roon Bridge won't run on it, you need to buy the one that says 2017 on the mainboard.
This one comes in at around £35-£40 depending where you buy it. It's £44 on Amazon.
The reason is that Roon Bridge needs a particular Arm7 or Arm 8 chip to run, my 2014 Pi 3 B+ won't let you install Roon Bridge alongside MoOde but the one I bought (2017 version) worked fine as it is the CORRECT Arm7 version.
Here are the two Arm versions
Armv7hf
Armv8

Good call.....
I wasn't even thinking about 3B+ with anything other than the ARM8 Chipset.
(Something released in the last 12 months or so).

No idea how, but I’ve now got Roon running correctly through Volumio - see below:
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200308/3c83ef3095b45cc6abd908ad79070d61.jpg
This wasn’t showing before but now has my Pi showing as two options: one as a Roon output and another as ‘other network devices’.
If I select the Roon one as the output then I get the information above, if I select it via the other network devices, then it’s the Airplay one.
If I just select the Roon output, it should be fine as long as it continues to show as an option (it didn’t previously hence my trepidation).
I’ve cancelled the My Volumio free trial so now Tidal isn’t native within the app however obviously through Roon it is.
If the whole set up behaves during my free trial with Roon then I’ll look to buy the full version

I never used Roon beyond 4 or 5 trial periods, however once they added Qobuz to Roon I decided to try it again, Qobuz reducing the sub cost helped too.
Now fully into Roon I have to admit after being a sceptic for so long.

It'll be phased out soon too and only yearly subscription allowed.

The procedure is as follows...
Download Roon Sever to your laptop.
Download the Roon app your remote device (phone / IPad / etc.)
The two will automatically sync.
No dropouts ever.
The laptop must alway be hard wired (No wifi)
As said before. Perhaps one day swop the the laptop for a NUC.
NIGHT NIGHT.

I sort of agree.
Let me put it another way....
I have (over a lifetime) Maybe 2500 albums.
Say average cost £10 each (Many twice that)
Also, approx 800 CD'S, say average cost £5 each. (Many lots more)
Now, what's the worth for sale.... Some albums £100 most £2/3 (that's a fair loss)
Same with the CD's, except worse (Perhaps £1 each). "A Megga loss"
And you say Roon is expensive!!!!

The amount of music you can explore and enjoy is far greater than the purchase process.
I’m finding artists and titles I’d never have known about and Roon Radio is a revelation!
I also have many thousands of records (vinyl) and gigabytes of stored cd Rips (dumped those nasty things years ago)
Tidal & Roon has opened up another layer of musical enjoyment. Fantastic

I agree in principle André, which is why is still buy the CDs I really want to own, but I'll take living in a mansion full of all the music I could ever possibly want for a tenner a month, over not having it at all.
I guess it depends on how much music you want to listen to? If you have most of what you want and don't want to explore, then it's a waste, but for me it actually saves me from buying something blind, playing it once and never playing it again. Streaming has introduced me to countless new artists, expanded my musical horizons and enhanced my enjoyment.
The thing I'm most uncomfortable about is the low revenue for musicians, which is why is still buy music at gigs. The flip side of that is I've been to many gigs and bought music from artists I would never have known about, had it not been for Spotify.
Horses for courses as it were ;)
Edit: (great Avatar by the way André :))

As always, you talk (write) a lot of sense. Before Spotify and now Tidal as well I used to spend £150+ a month on CDs, often blind. Now, music is democratised. If I stream an album 100 times over the course of my life, the artist is likely to get more than if I buy the CD, especially if it is one of the many hundreds I have only played once or twice.
I too think they should get more per play, but I guess my £35 per month subscriptions only go so far. So definitely agree you should buy physical releases from artists you love, even if you end up never opening them like I have for a massive pile over the past decade or so!

Roon brings the world of streaming music to your living room. Its makes hard digtal formats obsolete bringing true music browsing to your fingertips. I use an intel nuc box with a 1T disk that holds all my music as well as providing a gateway to tidal, but what makes this a killer app is all the album and artist info.
Using roon you can play music through your hifi, tablet, phone or even the tv sound bar. For serious listening the intel nuc drives my Brooklyn Dac which can play all the hires formats. For good recordings sound quality can approach my analogue setup for a fraction of the cost.
