Thanks for the heads up on that as had no idea there was a jazz section... Now contributed with a pointer to Henry's work on the cheap.

Loverly Pye amps

Good to see the EMT 930 mounted properly - some use it simply resting on the sub frame,

Is the paint colour of the Pye amps original? Which headamp/phonostage or SUT do you use with the Ortofon?

Ooh - I'd love to hear the EMT. Fantastic industrial design. When the Lottery win comes up I'll be getting one. It looks like it's in the right environment with the exposed brickwork :) SPU and Tannoy as well! Excellent. Black Jazz label rules

The original colour is a mystery and even a PYE collector I met at Roy Gandy vintage bash organised by Terry Bateman many moons ago had never seen a 12 to help... This pair most likely has been cosmetically restored in its lifetime and the book Audio! Audio! is a no go also... Either way I like it in preference to the olde English white/grey.

At the moment I am using the Hashimoto into the BPS (set to MM and bypassing the Nagra transformers). I do switch as the Nagra house tranny's are exceptional though the BPS can be fussy with the more 'higher output' low output moving coils.

https://i.postimg.cc/MKtWqbyh/IMG-5826.jpgThey should be good. I reckon they'll be a Robin Marshall design, he did all the MA speakers of that time eg R852 and R952.

Well impressed I remain and these are in lovely time warp condition....

The top end air and speed is exceptional on jazz cymbals as demonstrated with Jeff Parker's New Breed Album and for me better pound for pound than LS3/5A's....

Found my 'Monitor' keepers for sure.... Recommended.

No idea on the stands just picked up cheap from St Somewhere but perfect for the MA's...

When I say old English white I am referring to cream version with the grey transformer caps and the only colour I've seen along with the light blue.

:wow:

Lovely system!
I love the fact that it is quite compact and very tidy...
Quite the opposite to mine...

I still have to audition an EMT TT!

Integrating large and small components gives rise to the art of Ying and Yang... The concept of dualism when seemingly opposite or contrary forces can actually be complementary....

Would love to audition those compact Triangle speakers you have especially as I heard they are quite sensitive.

Welcome to the forum. Superb set-up, Paul!

Could we see a nice close-up please of your EMT? Particularly also one of the arm/headshell and how you've mounted the 103:)

I used to have their bigger brothers the ANTAL ES. And I drove them with an Icon Audio 40. The result was Ok, but it never gave me total satisfaction.

On the other hand these diminutive Comete ES are very much suited to my tiny room (3,25 m x 3.40m). The bass is not earth shattering but it is clean and dynamic, never overbloated. And the rest of the spectrum is beautifully integrated in my view.

One can have these for almost beer money, so I would say entirely worth a punt with even flea powered OTO (12W more or less).

Here is a pic of the 103 which has a steel SME spacer to get the required height within the headshell and add mass.

Will post up some more pictures hopefully today.

Brilliant stuff, Paul, and thanks for taking the time to do that:)

I'm a big fan of both EMT turntables and arms, and 103s (especially the SA, which I consider as one of the best ever of the genre), and also SPU headshells (and cartridges)!

You've done a great job of housing the SA in an empty SPU headshell. Plenty of mass there too, to keep it happy! Only thing I'd say, as someone who's experienced the sonic benefits of doing so, with both SPUs and 103 in detachable headshells, is upgrading the lead wire - and judging by what's shown in your pics, you can do better!:)

Try a set of these instead, and trust me, you'll remove a notable bottleneck, right at the source of the music signal: https://www.ortofon.com/lw-7n-p-438-n-3445

Are they flexible Marco cos they look a tad Thick?

Marco
14-03-2020, 08:57
They're flexible enough to fit mate, and once in situ of course don't need moved:)

Or you can go for the 6N ones, which are thinner. The leads are thick because they're made from good quality copper wire.

upgrading the lead wire

Thanks for the comments Marco and the desire for an end game 103 set up was spawned during the 'legendary' 103 War of the Words between Romy the Cat and Thorsten Loesch many moons ago...

All my other cartridges sport choice headshell/leads and the SPU I do have good wires cut and ready to go.... Just cannot find it in myself to alter it as it sounds just 'right'...

I am though someone who uses old Klangfilm cinema loudspeaker cable so I am partial to olde wire.... Who knows when I will get the soldering iron to it....!

Hi Paul,

No worries at all. Hey, if it sounds just right to you, then leave well alone:)
