Multimedia audio controller driver missing

Hi

I did a re install of XP today and now no sound , Multimedia controller driver is missing .

This seems to be a big problem looking on the net , what i don't understand is i must have had the driver before and now its just not there .

Tried all my motherboard and audigy discs and nothing:(

I have onboard sound and a creative audigy installed , very strange :scratch: has anybody on here come across this before ? .

Chris, you should try and install the drivers the PC was initially working with.

Can you please look at the hardware list, it should give you a clue about what is missing, exactly.

Does it make any difference if you install the latest service pack to windows?

Multimedia controler is mostly driver for sound card (onbord or ext) which is not a part of Win,with or without any SP.:)

Its an Asus M3A socket AM2+ and SB Audigy ' i have the discs for both! Windows is saying no hardware installed so i cannot install the drivers for either the onboard sound or the SB.

I looked up the problem on the net and loads of peeps have the same problem ,Microsoft seems to be clueless as to solving it .

Oh and my version of XP has SP2 built in and i think SP3

On the hardware list, you mean, the multimedia controller is on error ?
Or that it is missing on the hardware list ? :scratch:

Ok then, it's not as serious as I thought. ;)
You can try to go to the manufacturer's website and pick the right driver. If you can give me the maker/model I can provide a download url.

I looked at asus websight and was worried they dropped support for it as its 2 years old now ?

Type "M3A" for product and select "utilities" in the upper left boxes.
Then, click on the M3A card and download the Realtek audio drivers.

You can also have them on the Realtek site.

Probably the driver is in a subdirectory. Anyway, Realtek drivers change often....

Ah i have istalled the Realtek driver ' thats not the problem Demitri ! it won't pick up the hardware its saying i have nothing installed , onboard audio or the S/B card .

This is whats baffling me i can install the drivers for both , but it then says no hardware detected so i have neither .

Probably the motherboard is of another model. Try to determine the model (http://support.asus.com/repair/repair.aspx?no=197&SLanguage=en-us)

I reinstalled the realtek again and i now have the onboard sound working:)

Thanks Demitri , i think it must have been corrupted as i uninstalled it and then installed again, but my Audigy board wont work :( i think i will use the onboard and ditch the Creative , their drivers are terrible by all accounts anyway and i am mighty relieved just to get sound again;).

Next time, what I advice you to do, is : Keep downloaded (additional) drivers in a separate folder and backup/restore this folder for subsequent OS reinstalls.

I've done the same mistake as you several times already, so, now I'm more careful. ;)

And Chris,you are good listener (reader).
There are a few more options.Usualy,when compose somebodys PC,especialy with extra multimedia PC card which have poor driver I pull of all aditional card out.When Win and all MB drivers are working as it should I put back one by one that aditional card,and drivers as well.Of course, to shut down PC is required while doing the job :)

Yes i will probably try that as the onboard sound is pretty poor compared to the SB , very noisy and hissy , not much cop for doing any more rips

I'm wondering if there's a bios setting for disabling the PCI sound card. If this was enabled it could trick Windows into thinking there's no card there at all. Compaqs and HPs used to have this for video and Dells had it for NICs. Very frustrating.
