I've almost posted this a few times, but seeing The Grand Wazoo mention Miles Davis in the Spinning Right Now thread prompted me to finally do it.
Firstly, as the title suggests, what sound or instrument do you think is the most summery sounding? To me, a mute trumpet ala Miles is just so evocative of a sunny day, I'd have to chose that as number one for me, but what is it for you?
Second question, then -I've wanted to put a "Summer Tunes" playlist together for ages, the sort of thing you can bung on at a bbq in the garden (through your shiny Ditton 15XRs for instance! ;)) - a nice mix of summery tunes to while away the day. Problem is, I don't usually get too far - so how about some suggestions - sticking with my mute trumpet/Miles theme, I'll be rather predictable with "Summertime - Miles Davis" (http://open.spotify.com/track/6NYPKPZGAuhFnE2O2KshkL) to start.

The whole of the 'Dust and Dreams' album by Camel. I find it reminds me of that point just towards the end of summer when the birds gather on the telegraph wires ready for their epic journey. The gentle synth sound is evocative of that turning point in the year. It reminds of the empty east coast of England, wild and lonely with a gentle breeze.

The Beatles "Revolver". No other collection of songs evoke clear skies and hot summer more than that one.
Summer instrument? Has to be Fender Stratocaster, bridge pickup (the way it was played by George on "Nowhere Man").

I have some of their stuff on tape Alex... unfortunately they only had two official releases, Summer's Here (12") and Accept Yourself (10"). They were shafted by bad A&R but recorded a couple of albums worth of stuff though, and it's all very good stuff. Let me know if you'd be interested in hearing any of it :)

'Lost in the Machine' is a pretty accurate description of our musical journey between Summer's Here [1988] and Accept Yourself [1991]. After the release of our 'insanely catchy' first single we garnered some interest - signed a publishing deal with Chrysalis and had a few major labels on the table. We liked the look of Go Discs, held a signing party and all that jazz, then all at Go suddenly stopped. They pulled out of the deal - we still don't know why. Found ourselves backpedalling for a second chance with CBS and Hedd (Virgin offshoot). Ended up signing to Hedd. Went into the studio at Rockfield with Ed Stasium but was a pretty cold affair. Revisited Monmouth with Hugh Jones and with more success but by time we had an album together Virgin pulled the financial plug. Suspicions were aroused when the light bulbs were being removed and the receptionist was reintroduced as our new A&R. 'Have you heard of Muddy Waters?' was their opening gambit - somehow we didn't think we were in the right place. Spent the next few years trying to regain momentum but it didn't quite come off. Hey ho. 'Some of your friends are already this fucked' comes to mind.
