A small change to Barry’s system.

I have recently ‘retired’ my Studer-Revox C221 CD player:

and replaced it with a Mark Levinson 390S CD player/ processor (it can double up as a preamp):

Whilst I was more than satisfied with the C221, being a professional broadcast player it had a number of operational quirks, which were understandable for a machine to be used in a broadcast studio, but were ‘irksome’ when used in a domestic environment.

But the main reason for the change was twofold: it was an ambition of mine to add a Levinson CD player to my, largely, Levinson system; and being a broadcast standard player the C221 was extremely ‘fussy’ with the CDs played – music burnt onto a CD-R could become increasingly distorted as the disc played. Not all discs, but some.

Anyway the 390S plays anything that is thrown at it, and possibly sounds even better than the C221.

It was bought solely for the player. I haven't gone into it too much, but I don't think the 'preamp' side of it is as versatile as a conventional stand alone preamp.

But you're right I do have several preamps (6 at the last count) plus a graphic equaliser, so I'm in no hurry to aquire any more. ;)

I should add that the ML10A preamp shown is only being used as a phonostage.

That cos they are meant for Studios unless they are Bespoke. those Revox Grab hands should come off to reveal your mounting holes..

I use a single pair of Quad 57s (would love to use a stacked pair, but sadly don't have the space for such an arrangement). I've had my Quads for a little over 45 years now (despite all their shortcomings) and am unlikely to change them for anything else.

The No.28 will sound better than the output stage of the 390, good though it is.
