I use my PS3 only for watching blu ray (which is not that often). Because of its very loud fan, I keep it turned off all the time.

The other day, just for a lark, I've tried streaming music wirelessly from my iMac into PS3 and then into the Caiman DAC (via optical out). The music sounded on the brittle, grainy side (compared to how it sounds through my Squeezebox through digital coax out).

That made me wonder: does the PS3 need a burn-in in order to eliminate the graininess/brittleness? Or is it just the way it acts as a digital transport?

What is with you and burn in? Hope triumphs.
Why not put up with the worse sound and see what happens?

Which ps3 is it?
Some here rate them highly...

Not the best quality imo for streaming music to the dac, the fat one anyway

I keep meaning to have a look to see if its worth fiddling with internally, would rather at least implement a co-ax output and clean around the supplies to see if it improves

BTW the modified SB Duet (at the moment) wipes the floor with it

You need to change the settings of the PS3 imho. I'll look which sound settings are involved.

That's my impression at the moment. Much smoother, deeper, more musical sound than PS3. Is it attributable to the digital coax vs. optical?

The latest model (PS3 Slim). It's a hell of a machine, it indeed does everything you'd ever want, the only issue I have with it is the super annoying whiny high pitched whirring sound emanating from the fan. Is there a way to fix/minimize that? It's unbearable!

Yes, I think you're right. I've started fiddling with the settings, but then abandoned it when I read that applying some settings may damage the speakers (sic!) What's that crap all about?

Just asking a question. If you don't have anything to contribute, what's the point in calling in?

Basically, if some improvements could be gained by burning the player in, I'll set things up and do it. Otherwise, I won't bother (the reason for this is that PS3 has this super annoying high pitch sound coming from its fan, so I don't like having it on).

Maybe unfair in my case because my Duet is modified. I personally thought the PS3 lacked finesse, like a cheap dvd player.

I understand the Slim PS3 has a better internal dac than the older one but is the actual circuitry for the digital output (S/PDIF) changed too? obviously the internal dac has no effect if using digi output

I'd be interested in how you get on Alex... Especially as it's the thin one... Keeps us posted!

Agreed. PS3 Slim sound is on the 'cold' side, has a metallic ring to it (especially the piano). The best I could describe it is 'analytical' (but then, that doesn't really mean much).

Then again, as someone suggested, it may be attributable to an incorrect setting. There's a lot to go through in the audio settings on PS3, so changing the configuration may improve the sound.

Can anyone help regarding the PS3 audio settings?

Like I said, looks like there's room for improvement in the audio settings section of the PS3 Slim (btw, its user interface is phenomenally good! Probably the best I've ever seen). I just don't really know what to change there... Also, got a bit scared off by the warning that changing the audio settings may damage the speakers!

But the bottom line is, even if I get it to sound indistinguishable from my Logitech Duet, I still won't be able to use it actively as a music player due to the terrible fan noises. I hope that could be fixed too:)

(not sure why they couldn't build this player to be much quieter?)

There is aparently talk of them making a a/v version of the ps3... Although talkin to the Sony rep the other day, it's likely to be the same thing sold with a remote and no games...
Aparently the major issue with Sony products is that all the departments of Sony don't really communicate with each other ... Which is a shame I think as if they thought about it, they could probably make a product without the fan noise and slightly improved guts... Like ou say, the user interface is pretty sound and with the prossessing power it no doubt has it would tick a hell of a lot of boxes as a media pc...

Another thing I'd suggest they do is make it easy to extend the player with an infrared keyboard, as well as improve the web browsing experience.

Once we get that, there pretty much wouldn't be any need for a typical household to even own a personal computer.

Also, PS3's strength is in its openness to handle any and all file formats. If not out of the box, then via open source media servers/transcoders (the secret sauce is in embracing the DLNA open standards).

I've got the old model that I've had since launch. I swear when I first got it the fan was not so loud but like you say it's really aggravating. Maybe it's just getting old, but I think an OS update somewhere along the line increased the fan speed. I've put a lot of hours on it. I recently had to send it in to have the bluray laser replaced.

Maybe you've already been through this, but I have about a half-dozen optical cables and have found there are differences between them. IME the 2 that I have that are made from glass fiber are superior to the plastic ones I have. But I haven't tried the expensive ones either.

I have a PS3 slim. I traded my big Ps3 in when Game were doing some daft offers so much so that in reality it cost me £20 to change. My new one is quieter by a significant margin but there is a noise or whine which I agree is bugging but nowhere near the old jet engine I used to have.

I think the warning about speakers refers to full range sound being output to yir average tv and blowing the speakers as a result and most are used that way.

I cant see how settings will change the basic sound output from the device but would like to try some out if anyone could post them up. I used mine via hdmi into the Onkyo and it was pretty good streaming wav from my pc. I don't use it much this way as can be gassed having to have a pc and tv on just to listen to music. One thing I do remember is that the old pS3 output SACD which trounced cd version of same played from my arc am cd63, the slim doesn't do SACD which is neither here nor there as there is no real support these days unless you are classical or retro minded in musical taste hence why I did not mind loosing that facility.
