View Full Version : Decent XLR male for 11mm OD cable?
What is a decent male XLR connector for a cable of 11mm outside diameter? Preferably silver plated.
11mm OD is very large - what cable is it?
You might be able to use Neutrik XLR connectors if you cut the strain relief back to accommodate the large cable diameter, or use Cannon style XLRs if you remove the stress relief gland.

XLR are not designed for heavy cable like that. The only ones i know that may take heavy cable are the original Cannons or Switchcraft. Forget about flashy plating tho
Neotech NEI-1002 UP-OCC Silver.
I think I have found two makes of plug that will fit.
Neotech and ETI. The Neotech are stupidly expensive, and the ETI are expensive.
As the Neutrik are dirt cheap in comparison, I may well do as you suggest.

I did not find a Switchcraft that would fit.
The problem using Switchcraft XLRs with large diameter cable is that it is difficult to remove the strain relief gland.
I recently made up some balanced-line cables using Klotz MC5000 cable (7mm OD) with Switchcraft XLRs, and it was very difficult to pass the cable through the rubber stress relief gland. The screw grip needs to removed and the cable smeared with Vaseline, but even then it is initially difficult to pass the cable through the gland.

Looks like Switchcraft have a newer style range very unlike the originals, but these were industry standard before Neutrik came with theirs..

Those ETI look very nice. How expensive are they?

I used their AA series connectors: http://www.switchcraft.com/Images/Home_Page/Switchcraft_Conxall_Logo_2015_small.jpg

€99 for a pair of male connectors, unless you want the Kryo(?) version, then it is about €135
I have 4 Neutrik silver plated plugs coming. Managed to fi d them for a reasonable price.
