Help, help, help

Sunday morning, for no apparent reason, my computer no longer recognises the Forum log in info. This happens with all the Forums I frequent, it's not a TAOS thing.

I use Internet Explorer, the one before 8 and security is McAfee provided by BT.

Everytime I go on to a Forum, I have to put in my name and password over again. If I don't log off the Internet Explorer I can switch between the Forums without putting in the information again. I have been told, by another Forum, that it's a cookie handling thing but can offer no help except to change to Mozilla Firefox which I don't really want to do.

Does anyone have any ideas that a computer dumbo can check out please ?

Sorry to ask Dave, but have you tried Firefox? It even offers to load all your bookmarks / favourites from IE when you first install it. I use Firefox and think it's an excellent browser.

Unfortunately, I'm no user of IE7, except at work sometimes, so can't offer much advice about troubleshooting it, other than to do a Browser Reset http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ht/ie7reset.htm - resetting it doesn't lose your bookmarks but will clear cookies, saved passwords etc, giving you a clean slate again.

I have used Firefox on a previous laptop but I feel annoyed that I'm forced to use other than IE7 when it's a fault that has just happened.

I do use 'CC Cleaner' which cleans and empties all sorts files or whatever and this has not helped with this problem. It's as if my computer is rejecting the cookies from the Forums but I haven't done aything different to make this happen.

As well as resetting IE7 back to defaults I would do a good virus scan.

There is the possibility that somewhere you have visited has installed something nasty.

You haven't got "Delete browsing history on exit" ticked in Internet Options, have you ?

Thanks for all the advice and tips folks.

I got om to the BT Helpline this afternoon and it was sorted out in minutes. Apparently, the IE had been corrupted or something and the cure was to reset the IE default settings. That did the trick and I'm up and running again. Still no idea how it happened though.

By the way, C Cleaner will delete your cookie and form info unless you tell it otherwise by un-checking the boxes..

Apologies, I forgot to mention the reset-defaults scenario you did today. I've been a bit "down" last couple of days and got meself in bother here last night because of it. Hopefully all fixed now......

The thing about AOS is that we're a community of real people, and so we learn to live with each others little 'foibles'.
