Why have so many good people left the site?
Good question and I'm in know doubt a good number of others ask exactly the same question.
Dont expect answers as sometimes things wont want to be said and other times people just go without saying why.
Either way it's a real shame when good and proper hifi guys leave a place you know they once loved and added much value to in that sense.
I think Abstract Chat and contentious topics havnt helped and in my view those things have all too often and sadly, dominated over the real reason we are all here, which is for the love of music and hifi.
Some may say or fell, as I do, that we've lost our way and need to get back to the heart of it, as I've said, music and hifi, we've seen the 'other stuf' get in the way all too often.
Those of us on the outside looking in could do with out it.
As I say it's a real shame.

I agree that some subjects have been contentious and spoiled relationships and as you have said Rob it has obscured the real purpose of AOS which is a forum for discussing Audio subjects which is what drew us all here in the first place. I have enjoyed nothing more than engaging with some of you guys and discussing all sorts of audio related subjects no matter how extraneous but it is all the other Guff that I feel has led to spoiled relationships.
Hi Rob,
I think Abstract Chat and contentious topics havnt helped and in my view those things have all too often and sadly, dominated over the real reason we are all here, which is for the love of music and hifi.
There's nothing wrong with Abstract Chat, as such. There are some great threads (such as the car, food/drink and photography ones) that are very popular and evolve our community, but it's the "guff", as Jim says (read as some political discussions) that has caused issues.
During the last one of such I fell out with Jerry (Jandl) over something I said. It was my fault and I apologised to him for it, which he accepted, but he's currently taking a holiday from the forum, and Tom (Montesquieu) left over the same thing, kind of in solidarity with Jerry.
Ollie (Bigman80) and I a disagreement over something entirely unrelated to politics, and he decided to leave, plus he wanted to spend more time on AA That about sums up the folks I know who've left recently.
I take on board comments about us having 'lost our way', but it's not so much that rather than allowing some contentious threads to run for too long, and folks (me included) saying things that on reflection were unadvisable and ill-considered, and people again including me, having other interests/hobbies, not just hi-fi, which have been taking up our time. In that respect I intend to get more involved again in hi-fi discussions shortly!
Anyway, I wouldn't normally mention this sort of stuff, but since you've asked, I respect the likes of Jim and you too much, and consider you as friends, to ignore you and brush it all under the carpet:cool:

Well, if people leave by themselves, it's not that bad.
Vinyl Engine, for example, suffers under its very trigger-happy and paranoid owner who is banning people left, right and centre. If you go to any old topic, half of the posters would be banned and their nicknames often changed to something insulting.
Now THAT would be a problem.
I think sometimes we can all get swept up in passionate arguments and forget to respect each other as decent folk which I know many of AOS folk are.
Life is short and the years pass too quickly and we should all try and see a way through to the best aspects of people even if we don't always agree with their views. I have found many many people on this forum not only friendly, helpful and entertaining but have enriched my audio experience which i am always grateful for.
We all started out knowing nothing about audio but sites like this help educate and improve our knowledge no end and I respect and appreciate you have kept it going Marco even in difficult times.
I hope folk who may have moved on may find their way back here and can put the past behind them and start talking about polishing fuses, exotic cartridge modifications and new and amazing sounding equipment again!

Can only agree 150% bro. The stuf I learned hear in terms of hifi - gosh ! It has been key to that aspect of my journey.
And then the good guys too !

Jim, I'm just watching some footy at the moment, so will reply later:)

I had not realised that quite a few 'had left' as I dont engage that fully with the forum,as I try not to get too enthused by things (so that I will not spend a shit load of stuff that I wonder wether it works or not !!):)
I dont write anything great as posts go, so my thoughts are that this is still a great place to engage with others ,and the day I get embroiled in an arguement about global warming or religion or politics , is a day too soon !!
I do frequent Audiokharma a bit ,mainly because those cousins of ours across the pond ,are just another breed ,and they make me smile and its a great resource too !!:eyebrows:

I’d wondered why some members weren’t posting as much. As I hadn’t followed the more contentious non hifi related threads closely I hadn’t realised that there had been disagreement of the order described above. In the absence of an explanation I had come up with my own theory which was hifi related. This was related to the rise of digital playback and the average age of members. I wondered whether the discovery of almost plug and play digital, streaming etc. solutions and the fact that as people get older their enthusiasm for ‘faffing’ diminishes might be a reason. Younger people go straight into digital and the fashionable vinyl hipsters are probably not going to get into analogue to the levels of the past. There are endless tweeks to keep you occupied with analogue, not so much digital. I think some tried to, sort of, crossover the two. People advocating vibration isolation for even digital playback, surely just a hangover from vinyl with some companies trying to extend their lives? As people get older they are also probably getting to the point where ‘ endgame’ purchases have happened and passionate interactions with forums happens less. I suppose if other forums are buzzing it would disprove my idea. Are they?i

Ahhh blow it out your ass, Al, don't tell me what to do!!!! Kidding, kidding! :) This is a great place to pop in on, while I may not contribute much-as shown by my current post here, I still lurk and enjoy the banter. I think much is taken way too seriously these days(Not speaking for AOS in that comment, but more of a general take on many forums), hifi and music is supposed to be fun, at least I thought it was anyway!

I don’t think it helps with moderators that jump on humour that they might not understand. Then make personal attacks on contributors abilities.
Then another moderator jumps in and suggests that humour is confined to certain dates on the forum, sorry I missed that “sticky”.
When members see such actions they may be less inclined to post and possibly ridiculed.
I believe that when members of the forum have not been in a position exposed to the etiquette of the written word, although their comments are valid they may not have the knowledge of how to respond or contribute.
If members consider that AoS is a forum that should only discuss “hi-fi” and nothing else, then I feel sad, but I feel sure that other forums may be more suited to their needs.
I’ve learned a lot on here and I will remain grateful.
Gary

Problems with some people is they do not have a sense of Humour, Take tings way to seriously, Passion is one thing, obsession is another. Some people do not see banter or having a laugh viable, they dont even want to see off topic taking preference or even off topic at all.. they feel that it gets in the way of their precious little hobby.

I really try not to get involved in political discussions on the internet these days. We live in divisive times and it is too easy to fall out with people who you would otherwise get along with.
I much prefer hifi forums to be about music and hifi, with other matter only being discussed if they are not too contentious.

I would tend to agree with Al. Although sometimes when someone has asked for genuine help or guidance going well off topic and taking the pee can be a bit much, but I don't see that happen too much. I had noticed a few had stopped participating which is a shame IMO, its nice to exchange ideas and opinion on hifi and music with others which is mainly why I am here.
Personally I think the none hifi and music related threads are fine usually, although when contentious topics are raised, generally around politics, religion and other inflammatory subjects then things can get out of hand at times, perhaps this is where moderators should be more active in stopping/removing threads if they think it is becoming controversial, or likely to upset others, otherwise this sort of thing will probably end up turning people off of AOS IMO.
I don't always get it right but if I see these then I try to ignore them or not contribute to avoid fanning the flames. Yes I know we all have a right to free speech but not at the expense of others, and at the end of the day this is a Forum about HiFi and Music, or have I got it wrong.
Enjoy your HiFi and Music :):gig:

I do sympathise with Robert's and James' concerns, but I like to think there's room for other topics (well, with 90% of my posts being on Abstract Chat I would say that). Thing is, despite my interest in things hifi, I'm too clumsy and too thick to make any worthwhile contributions on a regular basis. Can usually hold my own with music side though.
I will say though, if you'd rather read about valve rolling than bowel movements (and you really should), then get posting about valve rolling - otherwise you've only yourself to blame :(
Perhaps the contentious topics could be moved to a sub forum where those so inclined can bicker to their hearts' content. Call it "Is this the right room for an argument?" Then leave them to it.

Ban political discussions and that would solve 90% of issues. It works on other forums and keeps people talking about what we all have a mutual enjoyment of, music and Hi-Fi.
Never one for over censorship or steering members into Groupthink to be honest...
lots of room for all shapes n sizes in this parish.
I thought the Wam solved the diversity problem with the “Car Park” area?
Keep the more contentious discussions in their own area.
Maybe time to expand “Abstract Chat”?

Exactly, but not just politics, the contentious topics where colour, creed, nationalism enter in, cause its just incendiary - guaranteed.
Add to that 'have to have the last word, no matter what types', ego's and personalities that think it's weakness or they've 'lost' if they dont have said last word and it's no wonder it's all just got out of hand too many times - it's not normal.
On top of that lot we've seen, all too often, where grown men who should absolutely know better, lacking what should be a standard maturity, which is to simply know and spot when it's time to just say, 'hey! we'll agree to disagree' rather than insisting on 'being heard'.
We'd probably have not seen the number of overly heated discussions, turning to argument, (not to mention the number of longstanding good guys and enthusiastic, learned hi-fi discussion contributors sadly now departed) if 'men' showed genuine man character by humbling up a bit, for the better good and harmony of the forum, instead of persisting in having the last say. It's selfish and damaging as the ensuing mess and drop out most certainly has a negative effect on other members. It's been going on way too long and has spoiled things

I think that's fair comment, Rob, and it's a type of behaviour that too many of us have been guilty of committing on occasion, myself included.
So should we have a vote on whether we should ban discussions on politics in future? And then honour the outcome. "Contentious topics" covers too wide an area, and I'm not willing to gag/censor things to the extent that anything remotely controversial is not allowed to be discussed, as that's definitely a step too far.
Folks too, need to learn to accept their 'world view' being legitimately challenged, sometimes robustly, and not take umbrage at the tiniest slight made against their sensibilities - for me that's just as important as strictly monitoring or banning (some) contentious topics.
Marco.

These have been very emotive times and we are divided as a country in a way that I can never recall. This has impacted on our ability to hold 'reasonable' discussions and people will flounce to competitors, of which there are now many, at the drop of a hat. You can only control your future response and what the forum, and other forums, do now, will determine their future survival.

I've never understood that though, as "flouncing" is an alien concept to me. Maybe some of us have become infected by the 'snowflake' generation?;)
Seriously though, whilst I understand and appreciate where you're coming from, too many folks these days are too easily offended.
Marco.
Flounce was the wrong choice of word. I meant leave having been offended.
If people have become easily offended then we need to reflect that in the way that we choose to communicate. As society changes, we have to. I am talking generally, not specifically about this, or any other forum.
Perhaps men have approached their feminine side more now. Anyway, as i said before, folk will move on, unfortunate as it can be sometimes.
Its one of the failings of the typed response that it is impersonal hence arguments start that probably wouldnt when face to face contact is established..

Yes, and perhaps also some folk need to toughen up a bit and learn to be more tolerant of views expressed that are contrary to theirs?;)
There's also the option of ignoring discussions that contain material you may find offensive, rather than continuing reading it and 'flouncing' because it doesn't meet with your approval. It's a valid option that for some bizarre reason many folks don't seem to choose.
Marco.

To an extent I think it’s a good thing to respect other people’s “offence level” and not ride roughshod over it by default?
...but only up to the point where you realise they are using it to get there own way.
folks that are “professionally offended” really get on my tits!
As bad as someone stomping all over someone else’s opinions, and to hell with both those.
We’re better as a society if we are more understanding of others.
Like most things in life, all about balance. :)

Exactly! The word is TOLERANCE, and it cuts BOTH ways.
I'm all for respecting other people's "offence level", but not to the point where it stifles reasonable free speech. I simply will NOT 'mamby-pambify' AoS to that sort of extent.
Marco.
At the risk of being offended, the use of 'mamby pambify' is somewhat inflammatory in a thread asking 'What's wrong'. Personally, I always liked it here and never had an issue but times are changing.

indeed it isnt the best phraseology if thats a word... I think people who are rarely offended need to take into account that others may not be so robust... But it does work both ways, and others do have rights too, so i usually say if its a subject that is getting potentially heated, dont read it and leave it to mods to sort out if they feel its over the line.
Few folk here would appreciate a sterile set of boards where everyone agrees with each other.. life isnt like that so why should a forum be any different.
Lots of stuff written here offends me/bores me/annoys me/cracks me up etc.. a bit like life

Robbie, I think you have highlighted a very good point, "Add to that 'have to have the last word, no matter what types', ego's and personalities that think it's weakness or they've 'lost' if they dont have said last word". Yes as I said earlier we are all entitled to our opinions but when somebody starts being provocative or attacking another member in an aggressive or derogatory manner it really does lower things, and all becomes rather sad and disappointing, as far as I am concerned anyway. If I see this happening I try and ignore it, but as you said others seem to have stopped contributing presumably for similar reasons, and I miss some of them and their input. I in fact considered having a break myself for these reasons, but have decided to see if things improve, I certainly hope so!

Lots of stuff written here offends me/bores me/annoys me/cracks me up etc.. a bit like lifeSpot on.

At the risk of being offended, the use of 'mamby pambify' is somewhat inflammatory in a thread asking 'What's wrong'. Personally, I always liked it here and never had an issue but times are changing.
Ha - I deliberately used that phrase to be contentious!:D
Thing is, I believe that forums should, as far as possible, reflect REAL LIFE, and in real life you simply aren't afforded such protection of your sensibilities. You need to be thick-skinned and resilient to survive, and I'd like to see more evidence of that on forums sometimes, rather than folks 'flouncing' when they don't get it all their own way, or after having read something that has upset them.
In essence, stand up for yourself, rather than run!
Plus, whilst we'll always act upon the reasonable requests of others and make changes if necessary, as that's important, there's also an element of: 'AoS is what it is', like it or lump it, and if you don't like it, then find somewhere else that suits you better. I have absolutely no problem with that, as AoS has never been, or ever will be, a 'catch all' forum.
We have a distinct identity that people will either relate to and wish to be a part of or not - it's therefore ultimately up to people to 'fit in' with us, not us to fit in with them, and I'm just as determined to protect that identity (and our ethos), as I am to be sympathetic towards people's views different from my own, or those of our regular contributors.
Other than that, I also agree with Grant:)
Marco.
Being one of the oldest members on the forum you may notice that my post count is very low.
Reason being that a lot of what is posted on here either does not interest me so I may read the first part and never visit it again.
Many times though I come across posts which appear to be created to get peoples backs up.
Many a time I have read something which I feel needs a reply - started to type, then before hitting send, re-read what I type then realise I am being dragged into something that in my everyday life I would have just walked away from - the pen (or keyboard) is mightier than the sword as they say.
I join forums for what they are supposed to be about - HiFi forums for HiFi discussions, car forums for car discussions etc.
If I want to discuss politics, the weather, food etc then I will look for a forum that caters for that.
Would you buy a book on cooking and in the middle find a chapter on how to rebuild your carburettor you would probably return it.
Why forums have to have sections that are not related to what they are supposed to be about has always puzzled me but it is what it is I suppose.
Anywho - if people choose to get upset and leave a forum for whatever reason then so be it.
The only time I have left a forum was when it got to cliquey and I felt posting anything was a complete waste of time (although I did rejoin many years later, still the same clique but I had grown up and ignored that......)
All the best to all on this forum as I do find the HiFi areas to be very informative and generally friendly
(just re-read what I typed before hitting the submit button and I am OK with what I have written!!)
What do you class as blogging here?

Good post, Andy, and thanks for taking the time to share your views.
I do understand where you're coming from. However, the key point to remember [in terms of the above in bold] is that AoS isn't simply just a hi-fi or music forum; it's a community, and if you wish to be part of that community, rather than simply using the forum as an information resource to support your hobby, then the subjects you've mentioned, if of interest to our regulars, are bound to come up and be discussed at length.
The other thing to consider, and I think this is very important, is that for many of us who don't use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc, etc, *THIS* is OUR social media, and where we keep in touch with people who have become our friends, many of whom we've met in real life, and some of whom live on their own and rarely get the chance to chat to anyone in real life, so that needs to be considered, and it's a vital part of what AoS is about, and gives it SOUL.
In that respect, AoS will continue to fulfil that function. I have no interest whatsoever in 'sanitising' the site in order for it to simply become a-n-other soulless 'bulletin board' or hi-fi forum, as it fundamentally goes against everything that we stand for. I do hope you appreciate where I'm coming from and understand:)
Marco.
Mark, that response above is also directed at you. See in particular my comments about social media, Facebook, etc, in reference to your point about 'blogging'.

Understand Marco - I too do not use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc so understand where you are coming from.
I have said my piece, you have listened and replied so for me this thread will no longer be visited so good luck to everyone else on this thread who continues to keep it going :)
(Guess what, re-read what I typed and deleted quite a bit of text ;) )
Well, you asked for an opinion (you did ask for an opinion on the matter) and I gave it. It is your forum and you can do with it as you want but it won’t alter my view on the matter.
I don’t use “Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc, etc” but somehow I still manage to chat and interact with others without recourse to discussing my politics on an audio forum (or what I’m having to eat, favourite colour etc.)
I know you like to think of your forum as some kind of village community but it’s not a view I buy into and, as I’m sure you realise, it’s not one that I’m interested in investing in either.
Well that's fine, Mark. You're entitled to your opinion and thanks for offering it, but we'll just have to agree to disagree [we have quite different personalities in that respect], and so you can contribute or otherwise to topics as you see fit:)
The majority of people here value the community aspect of AoS, and don't just want a hi-fi forum, me included, so that's how it will continue.
Marco.
Understand Marco - I too do not use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc so understand where you are coming from.

No problem, Andy. Don't be shy in contributing in future though, to stuff that interests you:)
The thing too, is that for anyone who isn't interested in, say, food or football chat, it's easy to ignore, as it's all contained in the one section, 'Abstract Chat' [that name was chosen very carefully]. If you're only interested in hi-fi therefore, then simply ignore that section - that's why we've worked so hard to separate out all the content!;)
Marco.
i dont use any social media, and never have. i post here only. oh and a private football one, although not much. I look after the youth stuff really as its the type of footy i prefer... Getting lads ready for a career is what more clubs need to do, and also to blood them. Man u do that a lot(but thats another topic).
I dare say my gallery thread is a bit of a blog... its not used very much tho now. I dare say it may irritate many.

I'd also like to pick up on a point Grant made earlier:
most of the older, more regular posters dont post much..they are mostly settled and are much less active...
That, IMO, is also a MAJOR reason why some feel that AoS has 'lost its way'. I certainly come into the above category. Whilst I'm still interested in hi-fi, it no longer holds the same level of interest for me (or was the obsession) it once was when I was at the beginning of my 'journey', keen and enthusiastic about all things hi-fi, and excited about trying different tweaks, etc. But if you're still in that zone, and deep into your 'journey', then you will look at things differently.
A disinterest in 'hi-end' audio is also why I no longer attend hi-fi shows, as I'm simply not interested in looking at or listening to ridiculously expensive systems, which sonically, largely disappoint, and besides I've never been a massive 'gear head', especially when it comes to new gear. Different with quality vintage stuff, so in that respect I'd derive more pleasure from attending Tonbridge than Bristol. Furthermore, I'm also more likely to go along to one of the NEBO meets than any 'professional' hi-fi show, simply because of the social angle and meeting up with friends.
And because I'm mostly settled (as Grant stated), in terms of having an interest in improving my system, I've got less to say on the subject, notwithstanding the fact that I'm disinclined to participate in topics that have been done to death many times before. That's not a criticism, simply a fact of how discussions on forums largely go round in cycles, or indeed circles...
Polishing fuses and dicking around with cables might be fresh, new and exciting to newcomers to the hobby (or those who are truly addicted to the whole tweaking/box-swapping thing), but not to someone like me who's been in this game since 1982, and posting on forums, talking pish about hi-fi (lol) since 1998, and thus been there, done that and bought the t-shirt! Plus also someone who is totally satisfied and happy with his system - and of course my love of music remains a constant.
Inevitably, you become a little jaded and run out of things to say... That's why I've been much less active on such topics. However, I still have a life outside of hi-fi and other passions/hobbies to indulge in, and enjoy chatting with likeminded people I consider as friends, so that's why I've mostly been active in the off-topic sections, discussing some of such with them. Fact is, life moves on, and we all evolve, so things simply cannot stay the same forever:)

I am only deluded in the belief that I have the best HiFi system that I can buy within my budget, and that anything cheaper would not perform as well or be as musical, I tell this to myself regularly or else I will become irrational and start changing system components. [emoji23]

Yes I agree Marco, I went through hifi upgrading in my twenties and go to a point where money and interest waned. Later on I moved to CD, a mistake at the time and the system went through various iterations until I reached a point I was reasonably happy with it. So buying HiFi mags, visiting shops and participating in forums waited.
4 years ago as some know I became interested in vinyl again, and due to illness had time to get involved in listening and HiFi again, it also helped distract me from my health issues. AOS I returned to and found the comradely and most interactions great, be up it about HiFi or other topics, and generally still do.
So even though my system is now relatively stable I enjoy the AOS interaction and hope to continue to do so.

That's the other thing about why the community aspect of AoS is so important, and the promotion of popular discussion topics other than just hi-fi - 'real world' stuff - it gives folks a reason to continue 'tuning in', forming a bond with others in the process, subsequently ensuring the forum's longevity long after people have moved on and their interest in hi-fi has waned...

I've never understood that though, as "flouncing" is an alien concept to me. Maybe some of us have become infected by the 'snowflake' generation?;)
Seriously though, whilst I understand and appreciate where you're coming from, too many folks these days are too easily offended.
Marco.
100%, my philosophy is to expect an opposing response to everything i post, we don't all have the same point of view and as long opposing responses are polite i'm fine with that. A recent example was on the Audio Technica group on Facebook, a guy posted a photo of his New bottom of the range turntable in white of all colours, my comment was basically that he would have been better off if he had spent the money on a higher quality 2nd hand deck on ebay, all the other posts praised this cheap plastic made in china deck, i was just being honest and i wasn't being offensive at all however other members of the AT page took exception and basically told me if i was on the AT page i shouldn't slate an AT product, some people are VERY easily upset.
Regarding other posts on this thread about people coming and going, i guess i'm squarely in that category, i used to be quite active but as other things in life take the front seat you can't always be online 24/7, there is always a lot of people on the site as many now as there has ever been i think, but posting activity has definitely tailed off in my view and some very knowledgeable people who used to regularly post have either taken a back seat or have disappeared altogether.
To finish I think you're all a bunch of cock wombles especially you Marco the biggest cock womble of all:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Cock Womble? Love it! Can I borrow that one sometime?:D
As for the rest, I'm with you, bro. It would be good to see more of you here though, whenever you get the chance, as I always enjoy your contributions, even when you accuse me and my 'mobile disco' of having a middle-age crisis!

Hi Mike, long time no see. Hope all is well.

I think I sit in the “I’m happy with my system(s)” camp, and to be honest, I realised a long time ago that investing silly money in this hobby wasn’t necessarily going to get me a better sound. Different, yes, but not always better. Through my modest experiments over the years I know the type of sound I like, and the biggest thrill for me is picking up a piece of bargain hi-if that sounds great, but when you realise you’ve got 12 pairs of speakers, three turntables, umpteen CD players and amps, plus other detritus not to mention enough cables to circumnavigate the globe you realise you probably don’t need to experiment any more!
I stayed away from all forums of any type for a few years when the kids were really little but what brought me back to AoS is the banter, to be honest, and several of you I have met in person so it is the community for me that is the attraction. I still read some of the equipment threads, but it has and always will be more about the music than the kit for me. Oh, and marmite on toast! ;-)

For me it was down to work commitments and house moves, luckily the place i have now has a basement which i've claimed as mine and I work for a pro AV firm so any new kit i want i can usually get it through work which makes things more affordable:eyebrows::eyebrows:.
I've got a couple of upgrades to my turntables in the pipeline and i've got a hankering for a PrimaLuna valve amp so i'm still on the journey, you're right what you say though Alex about more expensive kit not necessarily sounding better just different, personally i think once you reach a certain quality of kit it all starts to become very subjective and has more to do with personal taste than better sonic quality.
In the end it's all about the love of music.

I had wondered where some of the entertaining posters had vanished to...
Personally I’ve barely dabbled in anything outside of hifi related discussion on most hifi forums, I can talk rubbish with anyone in ‘the real world’, whereas I can’t really talk too much hifi out there.

Compared with some other forum sites this is still pretty vibrant - just look at the postings stream. There may be “isssues” with some posts, and maybe the site has drifted away from hi-if and music a bit, but does it really matter if people are using it and to some extent enjoying it?

I've rarely seen any political threads in the Abstract chat room on this site. Over on PFM its a bit different, I've been banned there about 5 times, I go back under an alias, but they find me out sooner or later, the thing is I don't hold extreme views, they're just such a bunch of virtue signalling lilly livered liberals over there that what most of us consider acceptable they consider outrageous, I think they all purchase industrial size quantities of smelling salts every month from Amazon. Meanwhile most views should be tolerated, its how they're worded, direct (or indirect) insults or put downs are for the anti social or weak minded, and they should not be tolerated.

Been up on and off since 10pm. Sue has been well all week, saw medic on Wednesday and given antibiotics, but got worse. Had temp of 101.6f and raise no and he. We called 111 at 8pm told call back in 2 hours, called them at 1am as no call, case still open, GP called at 1:45 and said would arrange to be seen at Exeter hospital by Dr. They called back saying would be hours as 4 on front, did we want to go to A&E instead.
So here we are, Sue’s been to triage, and another 1-2hour wait.
Hey ho so much for not going to A&E, only 3 people waiting, but still 2 hours to see a Dr. the NHS is in a mess.
Hopefully Sue will get sorted and be ok, I need my own personal nurse back.

It looks like OP don't post here anymore , tbh I won't miss his relentless pictures of VPI , only person I regret leaving is Jez - bit too harsh sometimes but brought balance to some bullshit posting .
...well that's one way of looking at it!:doh:
Another would be that he was an insensitive, arrogant prick who bulldozed over subjective-based audio discussions that he considered as "bullshit', simply because the subject didn't suit his agenda;)
He didn't leave; he was (rightfully) banned.
Plus, the OP (Jimbo) is still around. I was talking to him the other day. He posts elsewhere now but still looks in here. Can't say I noticed any "relentless pictures of VPI". He was (still may be when he wishes) a good contributor and someone I consider as a friend.

O people come & go on forums, generally because of others, disagreements etc. Ive been a member of AOS on & off ever since it first started early 2008.
I agree that sometimes he was bit too much but on the other hand his "arrogant" replies put stop to some pseudo technical crap on this forum , well life goes on and seems like more new members are joining which is good .
Indeed (on the latter), although we may have to disagree on what constitutes as "pseudo technical crap", but we'll leave that for another day!
The bottom line is that you should always RESPECT someone else's contrary views, and their right to hold them, even if you consider them as "crap" - and that's something that Jez was patently unable to do, and which is ultimately what led to his downfall, not just on here either.
The fact is, telling people that they are 'imagining' something or that what they've discovered is bullshit [because it doesn't fit with your scientific belief system] is only liable to end one way, and it certainly won't win you any friends, especially when most forums are 90% populated by subjectivists.
Marco.
I do still look in here as I have been contributing to this site for many years. I consider a lot of folk on here friends and thank them for their contributions
and advice which has helped me over the years.
Sorry if pictures of my turntable offend you Slav. Like I said way back on this post we should all respect each others views (and equipment) even if they don't hold with our own experience.

+1 - You and me both Jimbo, hence you, I and others, hate the silly, unnecessary stuf.
Peeps just need to keep the vibes cool, friendly and respectful, it's what built this place. Too much of the 'other, silly stuf' on the other hand, ultimately becomes detrimental and pulls it down.

if we had an issue about it it would have been moved .. I dont actually remember thread but obviously no one did at time. Old rule of thumb, if you dont like a thread then move on. You cant keep everyone happy with every thread.
There is a separate place to post pictures - The Gallery and I have no problem with that but stating thread in "Analogue Art" just to post pictures shouldn't happen and Mods should react instead over moderating where not necessary , obviously IMOI'm happy to see pictures in any post and it can also help show/explain whatever the post is about.
There's enough rules and moderation already, let's not have any more [emoji106]
'Art' with no images, now there's an idea [emoji6]

Cheers Marco, I think pictures are sometimes just as Interesting as opinions?:)
Seems like misunderstood what I said , if photo is a part of discussion its fine but if you post just to expect oohing and aahing do it in the GalleryAye fair comment [emoji106]
I have a problem with AoS.
The pictures are no longer showing in the threads on my iPad. It is annoying....

Sorry to hear that get well soon Sue
Thanks, Sue is not that good, the Drs are trying to stop the infection with several antibiotics and have gone to a microbiologist to get a more focused one to attack it and then I think it will be an operation to sort her out. All very worrying.

Our thoughts are with you and Sue for a speedy and successful outcome.
+1 (with bells on).
Marco.
Again, from myself too. These nasty infections can be stubborn. Hope they can find the right one soon.

Thanks chaps, as you can imagine it’s very upsetting. I just want to see her start to improve, it’s 48 hours now since she first went in and there has not been much change for the better, they seem to have just stabilised her, good in one way but not she needs to improve, so it is very worrying.
Hopefully we will get better news today.
Thoughts and prayers with you both.

Many thanks.
A quick update, they operated on Sue yesterday, and cleaned a lot of muck out from the infection. They think she will be ok but doing the usual investigations. So more intravenous antibiotics and once got rid of in 6-8 weeks she will need to go in to have an operation.
So hopefully her progress will continue.

She is definitely not out the woods yet. We spoke with the consultant today and she has to undergo 8-10 weeks long term daily intravenous antibiotics to get the infection down before they can operate safely . Also the biopsy’s need to be clear or its a different ball game. However you look at it, it seems like a tightrope balancing act.
Hopefully Sue will be able to make it across the chasm.

A quick update.
Sue's white blood cell count is down to mid 20's and the CRP level has dropped to 200 it was 350 2 days ago which is a severe infection, 50 to 200 is the high end of active inflammation and bacterial infection, they are will not send her home on antibiotics until it is sub 75. So it is going in the right direction, thank goodness. The severe pain she had has subsided quite a bit, bit obviously she still has some.
So I am hopeful the worst is over for now, and pry she does not relapse.
Thanks for everyones good wishes, much appreciated.

Every blessing and all the very best going forward, for Sue, yourself and the family Adrian.
Ironic really when you read all these lovely wishes to Sue that it is a "thread drift" of a "what's wrong with AoS" thread. To my mind, it shows exactly what is RIGHT with AoS, and that is the community spirit we have here, and whilst some may be unhappy that the conversation isn't limited to hi-fi, it is a far better place for our virtual friendships and camaraderie. Everything crossed, and prayers and thoughts for Sue and you Adrian.

Completely agree Alex, AOS is for me a great forum where the majority of threads are friendly and constructive with sincerity, and builds friendships.

So yesterday afternoon Sue came home with a bag pills to last 2 weeks. Sue has to return for blood tests in 2 weeks to check no signs of infection and liver and kidneys working properly, they will get results which we will have to wait for.
We saw the lady consultant surgeon who will be seeing her in 4 weeks and has pencilled in a big operation on Sue in 12 weeks. If the histology results are not good then the op will be brought forward. But she is hopeful it will be good news.
Sue is as you can imagine feeling pretty rough still, but is happy to be home. It is lovely to have her here with me again.
Thank you all for your kind words and wishes. I don’t think there is much wrong with AoS

Why have so many good people left the site?Aye. Good question. Not the place it used to be, has to be said. Tad.... boring, one could say, in comparison.
When you have arrogant & conceited displays - something's has to give. And so you have people leaving, or being "removed". In the process, the forum is the poorer for it, I'd say. Or, less interesting.
At the end of the day, it is only a hi-fi forum. There are other things in life to spend time on, like listening to music. I think we could all do well and follow André's example. Who he? I'm sure Mr Southall can fill you in.

I think AOS has become old and stale ,
Forum software out of date ,
Get rid of abstract chat , Do we need 1 2 3 word daily , Bread , Coffee , Engine oil , Tyres , Weather Etc Etc ???
It should be Art of Sound not another Facebook
I went for months , Probably not much of a loss as I am mostly the forum clown , Not good at Tech things
Time for change ?
The above points have been duly noted and taken.
Any Forum is only as good as its Members and how much they want to contribute. So if you don't like "1 2 3 word daily , Bread , Coffee , Engine oil , Tyres , Weather Etc Etc", then just ignore those threads and start a new one on something you do find interesting.

There's no obligation to read any threads one is not interested in, and there's no obligation to keep logging on if one is not interested in the content.
There are many fine and knowledgeable members on here, many in the trade and many with amazing skills and experience in the hi-fi world, so to say that all the best people have left is an asinine comment in my opinion, and exceptionally insulting to the members on here. What is it that makes you two so special and wonderful that places you in a position to insult everyone else on the forum?
Audio Al, 89% of your posts are in Abstract Chat, so why the sudden yell for its closure? Very odd indeed.
Feel free to move on to another forum if you adhere to your words.
