Had a very interesting time today.
I've had ADSL service for quite some time, only not the fastest in the world, as I live on the outer fringes of my nearest BT exchange.
Last week I had a letter through from BT trying to sell me broadband services, and mentioning something about a "Broadband Accelerator".

A bit of digging around on the BT site and I find out that this device is a filter set, designed to cut out RF effects on extension wiring, and thus allowing faster DSL transmission.
It was also mentioned that the filter is not required if the main BT socket has the Openreach logo on it, as the filter is already built in.

Today I aquired one of the Openreach sockets, replaced my ancient BT socket, and have been utterly astounded at the increase in speed of my DSL service - it's gone up from around 1.5Mbps to nearly 4Mbps.

I am rather pleased with this as, you can imagine.

I think these were originally called an i-plate or something when they first came out a couple of years ago. I've tried 3 on 3 seperate lines and had no improvements on any of them. From what I've heard it's really hit and miss as to whether they will make a difference. Some people have even reported drops in performance. So it sounds like you're one of the lucky one Chris. :)

Congrats, BT are good for something then? But it's typical that many broaddband users will never have heard of an I-Plate or the fact that in some cases you can get your master socket upgraded by a BT engineer (Engineer? that's a laugh) FREE of charge, it's normally circa £70.

If your wiring is really old, and you don't even have a NTE5 master socket, then you can get a free upgrade. I never bothered while on an ADSL service, but had it changed before I starting using an ADSL2+ LLU service.

I had problems with my broadband and fitting an i-plate to my BT master socket cured them "at a stroke".

This was over a year ago, and all is still well.
