Guys,

My Ortofon SPU Royal N has given up the ghost. So, I'm putting a call out to all trade sellers and fellow members who may have a MC up for sale. New or second hand considered. It will live on a SME V-12. Suggestions and recommendations also very welcome. The cartridge will mainly be for Jazz, classical.

Thanks

Andy

Having tried these I would consider, Hana ML, Phasemation PP-300 or PP-500 (Hugh at Ammonite Audio may be able to lend you one to try out). I have a Michell Cusis that is a Benz Micro Wood S in a different body, the Wood S is an extremely good performer. I listen to most types of music including Jazz and Classical, and I find all these to give a balanced presentation, but as you are used to a SPU you may find their presentation somewhat different, perhaps more clinical so I would have a listen first.

I currently use a Benz Micro LP-S which is quite a leap in price, but it delivers superb detail and control, have a chat with Henrik at https://www.lydprodukter.dk, he is a Benz Micro stockist is extremely helpful and often has ex-demos available with hardly any use, also he is very good on prices.

I’ve got an Accuphase AC-5 sat idle. It’s lovely, but a bit too polite when I prefer the gusto of a Koetsu.
There’s not much on the net, but you’ll find the spec. Maybe even the only one in the UK. Reduculous price new it’d be in budget ;-)

Spent most of its life on Sme 4.

If you like the SPU Royal N, why not have it refurbished? I can vouch for Kilian Bakker at Holistic Audio, who knows how to service and set up SPUs without losing what makes them special.

I have a Clearaudio Stradivari that is used and kept in reserve in its original box and case.
Might sell for £1K.

You would be pushed to best that immaculate Koetsu Black Goldline
For sale on private exhibitions... good match on that V-12

Wouldn't say the Black G. is a perfect match for the V12 spec's wise, but it did well on my Five, which is only 1g less eff. mass than your V12. My Urushi Vermillion has been in a drawer for over a year; keep wanting to re-mount it (but getting older and less willing to swap cart's). However, not as gutsy as a Black (partly because of output difference /impression) but a lovely delicate and fast Koetsu. Again, it would suit a more massy arm than the V12, I think, though it worked okay on my Five, briefly, before I changed to 12" arms.

Pity you're in Yorkshire, though. Not sure of the similarities or otherwise between SPUs and Koetsus, but Hugo would know (and he's heard mine).
