Hi,

I'm Steve, I live in suburban Adelaide, South Australia and my Audio interests are wide and varied, I prefer Vinyl over CD and am just breaking into PC as a source. Musically I'm a Marillion freak, but enjoy most music except Country and Western (will wash my mouth out later).

I used to be heavily into motorbikes but gave them up in 2001 when I emigrated from UK.

I drive a Mazda 3 and sometimes a '93 Lancer.

Beware I have a strange sense of humour.

P.S. I suffer with fat finger syndrome too.

Ex-biker here too, although I still have my ZX-6R in the garage, the Missus isn't happy if I want to ride it, (on account of the avatar, not 'cos I emigrated - she wishes! ;)) - do miss it sometimes, but plenty of other toys including hi-fi to keep me busy!

As you will see (or maybe have seen) AoS is a pretty friendly place so get stuck in, there's only a few that bite (it's the ones that want to nibble erotically you want to worry about!) :lol:

I am another ex biker had quite a few bikes in my time but made the mistake of being a despatch rider for a year horrible job. Do miss the freedom of bikes sometimes
I liked Japanese German and British bikes which in Hifi terms is a bit like saying i like belt direct drive and compact disc. Saw Marilion at the Marquee before they made it

Back in the day, Max T used Decca's on his Rock and very marvelous they sounded too :)

I appreciate the streaming route (very sensible), but if you ever were tempted to buy CD's, that awful CD63 KI thingy should be either modified to hell and back, or replaced with something not harshened up to get 5 star reviews (if you get my drift).....

I have a whole bunch of CDs, I have been thinking of modding the CDP, but have no idea where to start, I hardly use it now though. I have often wondered how a Decca would sound.

Decca's very in price depending on model I have only heard 2 models myself Prices start of around you can pick up a gold from around £500 which is pretty good value (it had the beating of a 103 with a bronze headshell but not by much) the Jubilee is a lot more expensive but if you have a decent TT and arm well worth the effort £1300 Or go for the reference which is even scarier in price but according to a friend who has it very special Personally I just think its going a bit to crazy with the reference

The CD player you have is now so old you may not wish to mod it (although laser/mech replacements are available still I think). The thing was extremely jitter prone - enough for this to be audible I think and the up-front and unsubtle noises that emanate from it needed a valvey line buffer such as the MF X10-D at the time to sound anything like "human," I think one begat the other at the time...

The late Garrott brothers down your way Batty, were the first to show what a "sorted" Decca could really do. These days, the things are better made and if the arm is a good and stable one (unipivot preferred), a Decca Pod is mandatory..


One quick thing about the "Decca Sound." If there is sound on the extreme of the sound-stage, on many cartridges, most often the sound coming from the other channel is bathed in some sort of reverb or "glow." This glow isn't always there on the recording I found although it adds to the "magic" of vinyl reproduction. Decca's don't seem to do this and can appear to sound dry with reduced "depth" by comparison. To my ears, this is more like how master tapes generically sound when compared to the generic sound from a wide variety of record players - slightly drier in perspective without the "bloom." Give a Decca a really well cut record and it's 3-D alright :)


On a different tack, I remember Marco raving about old 1950's records and how wonderful they sound. It may be interesting to note that the cutting heads back then could barely cut signals over 10KHz (Decca used Half-Speed mastering decades before MoFi did)...
