Has any body else been dissapointed with the quality of new Lps?
I sort of expect it with dance 12" records or Lp issues of the latest indie release but these £25 180gm reissues can sometimes look like thyve been skimmed across the floor. Got one recently that has a bloody great gouge in it.
Whats going on !

In short,YES! and with big greassy hand prints too.
I think the guy stuffing sleeves eats deepfried pork dipped in lard while working.

The pressing plants you see in pictures have automated bagging machines but now they seem to be run in the back of kebab shops.

Go for a first pressing every time, if it's at all possible with old recordings.
With new ones....... well, I'm not sticking up for 'em, but I think we should be grateful for what we get. If all else fails you've always got the Sale of Goods Act - fit for purpose & all that.

If your buying on line how can you tell for sure if its first pressing?

On Ebay you can't unless the seller know what he's got, or he answers your carefully phrased question.

But Ebay ain't the only game in town.

Whats your trusted sources or is that confidential

I'm just picky and patient.

............but I do enjoy being opportunistic, which Ebay is great for. Log on & look at what's going in the next 60 minutes (vinyl/albums/auctions only). You'd be amazed at what you can pick up & it only takes 10 minutes of your time when you feel like it.

I guess ive steered clear of second hand stuff because of the grubbyness of it all but now ive got an rcm......i think this is where the fun begins

Abso - bluddy - lutely!!

That's the beauty of it. You can take risks now that you never thought possible (esp. in charity shops!)
But the best feeling is when you realise that you would normally have changed your cartridge a year ago. Reduced stylus cleaning = less risk of damage + less wear = more cash for buying records. Win, win!

Funny , i had a quick rummage in a second hand shop after work , just of Tottenham crt road. I heard these guys talking to the owner and buying mad stuff like calypso and afro cuban and i realized they were members of Aerosmith. These guys said they didnt even have a TT but just wanted to re live the fun of looking for a few hidden gems. Says it all i guess.

If your buying on line how can you tell for sure if its first pressing?

This company specialises in tracking down and selling what they see as the definitive pressings. They're extremely expensive because you're basically paying for them to try out loads of vinyl in order to find the best...

Me? I think half the fun of record collecting is finding the best ones yourself. Trial and error. A record cleaning machine is likely to help too.

I gave up buying new vinyl a short while ago. After paying £25 (or so) each for a fair few shockers, I got a bit pissed off with it. :steam:
