I don't know if i started this some time ago, so if i have sorry

How is it possible for someone to listern to varied types of music & be equally happy? I've listerned to the same music since i started listerning to music & don't intend changin that..

to me it's an elite form of music ;)

Guess it comes down the individual.I've always had an eclectic taste in music,and I like being able to change genres as the mood strikes.

Same here... I'm all over the place when it comes to the music I like, but I often end up listening to a lot of one thing for a while, then going back to something else, and on and on. I have a very short attention span when it comes to music :)

I once did a cut-up compilation of stuff where no track played for longer than a minute. The shortest track was about 4 seconds. And the best moment was the bits that went from some 170bpm happy hardcore track I can't remember the name of into Hendrix's Purple Haze (for a few moments), on into the KLF and then off to Bolt Thrower :)

I think most of us would turn the question on it's head, Andre - depending on my mood, I'll fancy listening to a random genre, from a random period of time (nice 50's jazz for a sunny bbq for instance, or some thumping rock when driving) - I would just be so bored if I restricted myself to one type and period all the time - and my thirst for new exciting music that I've never heard before is never quenched - so sorry matey, it is the ONLY way I'm happy! :)

Re: the period of music thats within the style i listern to, i have the ability to pin point certain instruments of the time & how they are played.. within a few years of this music style, instruments change for advancement sake hence the musicians also changed style to suite, as if the instruments were dictating the musician style!, i can pick this out & totally dislike it. this is why i'm stuck within the few years i lust for. anything else afterwards would be like being tortured..Any other form of music, well i'd rather eat shat & die first :lolsign:

I bought a Hawkwind album today but im not in the mood to listen to it. Im in a Lal Waterson mood tonight. If i only liked one type of music id be watching a lot more telly.

Not saying you don't but you have to know your music if your into one genre then you wont be bord

I had narrow taste in music when I was about 15 or so. I wouldn't listen to anything other than the Blues. Not proper Blues; just Fleetwood Mac, Chicken Shack, John Mayall can't fail type-Blues.

......but (and it's a big but) you don't know if you're going to like something or not 'til you hear it. You've got to give stuff a chance.

Andre, I think a lot of folks think you limit yourself by the fact that you set yourself these boundaries. However, the difference between me & you is that I go wide & you go deep. Simple really.

Actually when you get down to it, the music Andre listens to is incredibly varied, but it's all just been stuck into a single pigeon-hole (partly by Andre!!!!).

Music is too special to be labelled & stuck into uniform slots.

Andre over time you have proven to us that prog rock can be quite wide and you music taste is very varied even within a genre. But I like many others enjoy a wider genre of music. Take last night I started off with Zero Hour they pretty heavy with lots of time changes I then listened to Rodrigo Y Gabrielle They combine Flemenco music with a rock vibe and sound like no one else (great live band and really good production values too) and then Jeff Buckley. Listening to one genre no matter how deep would not give me that kind of variety.
In the end its just about enjoying music

No i won't accept this..maybe if you stick all prog in the same pot but personally i think 50% of prog bands crap tbh, i have to be selective...most the stuff i listern to will have the same basis..Hammond organ/Mellotron/Female vocals/Brass instruments are important to me within prog..As well as prog i like some late Psychadelic band that fit nicely into my early prog pot cos technically prog was born from these late Psychadelic band, early prog still has it's Psychadelic sound/styles.

You lot cannot argue this cos you actually no nothing of the bands i listern to, you only know than the common garden prog ;)

You have it wrong, what i was trying to convey is you & chris are saying i have a varied taste in music, i said how can that be so when you havent heard anything i listern to! all you can quote on is common garden prog you may have heard which is mostly the boring end IMHO...

I used to have a wide taste in music and can still listen to anything and enjoy when other people play it on their systems but my own music collection is pretty much progressive synth now with some ambient dub, downbeat. 90% modern berlin school. My taste has really norrowed down over the last 5 years as I found a style I really love and would like to be able to play.

I soon get bored with any typical group lead guitar, bass, drummer, singer 4-5 min tracks once I have heard it a few times and have the hook in my mind.

Come to think of it... I don't care much for classic drum as the underpin of music. I prefer the warmer less hard sound of a synth in sequencing mode.

I'm with you on this one -- I can only listen to one type of music: good music;)

Although being a teenage headbanger and a biker throughout my early twenties, my musical tastes were well mapped and deviation was relatively minor. During my late twenties and thirties, I was heavily involved with stage production at raves, festivals and club nights. THis opened my mind to alternatives. Many I rejected as being utter crap (drum & bass, house hardcore etc), but some music (heavy trance & techno) I rather enjoyed. Due to its harder edge, it reminded my of my earlier headbanging exploits.

Discovering bands which actually played this music live such as KLF, Prodigy, Way Out West and Lab 4 to name a few was icing on the cake. I still listen to rock music and its derivatives with a passion, but sometimes some "penetrating beats" are required. As more bands start to play decent dance music live, things hopefully will get even better.
