How to rip surround sound to 2 channels?

I am considering purchasing the Genesis box set (http://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Box-Set-1970-1975-Disc/dp/B001EO2UJK/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1276880332&sr=1-4). The reviews indicate that the CD remastering sounds inferior to the surround sound remastering on the included DVDs.

My question is, is it possible to rip the DVDs and play the recordings back on a 2 channel stereo system? If yes, how to go about doing it on the Mac?

Alex, collapsing the channels down from surround to 2-channel won't give you a true 2-channel mix. The relative front and rear levels, and particularly any phase-affects are likely to have unexpected consequences when you mix down to 2-track stereo. Just like wacky stereo releases can screw up badly when collapsed to mono.

But if you want a DVD-Audio archiver for the Mac there's DVDAExplorer. I've not used it myself, so caveat emptor.

And even though I have the remasters, and am enjoying them immensely, just the fact that the remixes seem to have uncovered some previously unheard sounds is enough to get me salivating.

So are you saying that this box set is a victim of the ongoing loudness war, with the 'brick wall' EQing, or is something else making it horrendous?

Quite often a DVD-A has a 2 channel PCM track.

All bar one of my DVD-Audio discs have a stereo version, but none of them have straight PCM tracks.
Every one has MLP files.
The one with no stereo version is a Dual Disc (remember them ?) sampler from one or other of the hifi rags.

You should be able to get a good quality rip of an MLP?

Mind you I suppose it depends if that track has been remastered too.

The MLP stuff rips fine with Foobar2000, DVDAudioExplorer or DVDAudioExtractor.

The tracks are usually 24 bit depth and 48/96/192kHz sample rate.

Sorry nick over looked this. Yes Series seven reel available in both 7" & 8.25"..just won a seven incher only yesterday, looks unused still has it's polystyrene liner inside the reel..

Holly merde! You're right. I got the box yesterday and indeed it's the most criminally sounding music imaginable. Even the worst enemy of Genesis, who wishes to completely ruin and tarnish their reputation, couldn't possibly create such an atrocious remix.

What were the remix crew thinking? And how did the Genesis founding members allow this heinous crime to see the light of day?

In short, the remix crew managed to remove any traces of any magic from those gorgeous albums that Genesis released in the early to mid '70s. Let's be clear on one thing -- this is some of the best music ever recorded, and to manage to completely ruin and destroy it is no minor accomplishment. Just listening to the remixed "Firth of Fifth" is enough to make you cry -- they've totally killed the gorgeous music that was recorded on that track. And like you said, managed to bleech even the traces of anything musical in there. Everything sounds like those horrendous midi tracks from the '90s.

Thank goodness we have the original mixes in a pretty nicely restored remasters.
