I was the same when I lost my mum, dad and step father but distraught when my furry buddies left me. I dread the day my little Mia leaves me.

When I lost my lovely Whippet I was a mess.... she was a big part of my life....

Although I was distraught when my mum died of cancer, and will be the same when my dad eventually goes (as we've always been close as a family) - as a MASSIVE cat lover, I know *exactly* what you mean.

The difference is the love of any intelligent animal (cat, dog, horse or whatever) is unconditional. They make NO demands of you (other than with feeding and/or exercising and giving them attention), take you as you are and will never let you down.

You simply won't get that from ANY human being.

However i do find cats & dog have different adjendas.. Dogs are genuine companions that love to have a master as a friend where a cat needs a slave & has one thing on the adjenda *FOOD* So they will bull shit you in any way they can lol but you just love em

Yes, emotion can be a strange thing. For example when my daughter went to university I was quite matter of fact about it all and seemed rather emotionless when we left her there.
But a few times on the pet section here I've started to cry like a baby after reading something fairly mundane !, Sometimes I think there something wrong with me .lol

Personally as much as I loved my pets etc my family losses have been harder. Much harder. But I guess it's a different closeness and different love.

I feel for everyone loosing or lost a pet, the pain of losing any is real and I agree with the OP.

Used to live in Pulborough some years ago, recently there to collect my Rega R3 speakers.

Unfortunately we now have it confirmed from three referrals that Kara has bone cancer and her quality of life will not be good for the brief time she would be with us. Therefore we have had to make the difficult decision and manage the last few days of her brief life. Our vet has been marvellous and we will get the family together to say goodbye. We will always remember the fun and mischievous individual that she is.

We will of course be in bits for a while and luckily we have thousands of memories of her.

She is the second Retriever we have lost to bone cancer but we will get another. They are such wonderful animals and companions.

Sorry to hear that Jonathan, it truly is an awful thing and seems to be quite common in large breeds. Our last dog (Brian the bullmastiff) also had this and it was heartbreaking. Upset the vet so much he waived his bill.

lovely pic in your avatar. Yes nice docile animals retrievers, like labs. I had a black lab for 14 years before having get him put down with cancer. He was a real character... we were all upset.
