A fantastic Christmas gift- striking it lucky!

Luckily I managed to dodge the socks and useless-but-lovingly-given things this Christmas, and instead got something audio-related that has surpassed my expectations and made me very happy indeed!

Looks like speaker cloth to me but can only think of JM Labs... but that JM isn't correct for them.... hmm

Maybe older Jean-Marie Reynaud speakers

You are getting there! Europe as a source and the first name Jean are both correct....it's actually the little-known Swiss manufacturer Jean Maurer. These aged (40ish year old) speakers are a 2 way design with an 8" mid/bass driver and a very interesting solid plastic tweeter (which is physically offset for time alignment and inside an angled enclosure).

They came to this country by a circuitous route and I have to say....these are quite stunning. Supreme musicality, detail is very apparent but without being too brightly lit. I love to listen to orchestral versions of Ravel's "Le Tombeau De Couperin" to judge a speaker's ability to unravel complex arrangements- this little beauty has me smiling! Excellent wide soundstage too. How an apparently simple 40 year old two way does this so well, I have no idea.

I do know that Jean Maurer favours very steep crossover slopes, a similar principle to some JSE speakers.

I feel lucky to have them and will NOT be giving them up!

The tweeter is a Philips AD 0160 T/8 or T/4 and the bass driver has the looks of an Audax unit.

Geoff/Oldius- they came over here from Cluj Napoca- there are definitely some interesting and reasonably-priced old hifi gems out there.

Timothy- yes- very lucky, I know. I really love the sound overall- the only thing is that hearing them has me in thrall to the idea of a more full-range pair, from higher up the JM food chain. Low end extension is quite important to me in a speaker. But yes, I will be enjoying these for a long time to come. I hope you manage to track down one of the later models. I would say even if you can only get yourself one of the small models like this one- go for it!
