View Full Version : A curious thing has happened?

Following earlier advice, I bought a pair of HiFi grade 6.0mm van Damme speaker cables to connect my Myryad MP100/MA120 pre/power amp to my Kef Reference Series Model 2 speakers.
I could hear a definite improvement when playing cds through my Naim cd player.
I then decided to experiment with bi-wiring, with my QED Silver Anniversary cables to the LF and the van Damme to the HF.
When I switched on the amp I noticed a hum from both speakers which was not there before. Not loud, but noticeable, not audible when listening to music. The hum seems to be slightly worse when selecting the "aux" input to which I connect phono preamp.
I would be interested to know if anyone had experienced this before. Any comments or suggestions would be gratefully received.
Perhaps I should just forget bi-wiring?

Can you send photos of the connections at the back of the amp and speakers please?

Will do, as soon as domestic duties allow!!

I’m afraid something is wrong then (not the domestic duties bit ;)), Bi-wiring shouldn’t reveal, or cause, any hum. I suspect some other connection issue which has accidentally been caused whilst swapping cables around behind your amp.

You did remove the links between the HF and LF speaker connections?

cables might be picking up rf etc try rerouting them away from other ones and see if it varies/goes away.. as said above check the links

Normally that only happens if you are using very high sensitivity speakers (over100dB) and the Kef’s don5 fit into that category.

Leaving the links in shouldn’t cause hum either.

No. But it makes bi-wiring even more pointless (in my view :)).

:) - perhaps (though I’ve heard more benefits from bi-wiring than bi-amping) ;).

No. But it makes bi-wiring even more pointless (in my view :)).I thought that but maybe having two guages and materials would still help, it would be like a hybrid cable.

Maybe a wire is loose or crossed.

Biwiring should be suddenly causing hum.

Can't really get to the back of the amp to take pictures. What are you looking for??
I have removed the links and double checked all connections.
I have routed the new cables in a similar path to the old ones (QED). Could try re-routing separately??

Stephen, the connecting links will be on the binding posts on the back of the speakers.
