Its from the Dutch "pije" which was a rough woolen fabric coat. The British Navy then kinda made it theirs and the Yanks followed

I was eyeing traditional donkey jackets on ebay the other day. I was curious to know if they could still be bought. Always liked 'em, they look good with jeans. There are some decent ones with real leather across the shoulders, unlike the cheap vinyl some use. Not cheap like they used to be though.

very similar although the donkey was the labours version and a bit longer.. same length as an officers peajacket on bridge etc
