I'm looking for a new SUT to replace my Hashimoto's which have too much gain , so I am looking for recommendations for 1:10 SUT's that can sonically compete with my HM3's .
For the record I have tried Sowters and found them lacking .

Any recommendations ? .

That's a tough one as having tried/heard many SUT's from Billington to Auditorium I have found nothing to better the HM3's organic sound even the best of the Bob's Devices.... A friend has HM7's but I like the 3.... S&B TX-103's can be set to 1:10 and were not that far behind the Hashimoto's in my set up but not as good and it was easily apparent.... Good luck and some of the vintage Tamura's I heard back in the day were excellent.

HM-3 are 20x or 40x

HM-X and HM-7 are 15x or 30x

I have used both HM-3 and HM-7 and prefer the HM-7. I haven't heard the HM-X

What cartridge and phono stage do you want to use the SUT with?

Benz Micro Ace SL / HM3 / Tron Convergence MM .

Benz Micro Ace SL / HM3 / Tron Convergence MM .

SL is 0.4 mV output, and Tron is 48 dB gain, or 5 mV in for 2V out, so 0.4 mV to 5 mV would be 12.5x SUT

Your HM-3 is 20x, so a switch to 10x would reduce overall system gain by 6 dB, whilst a switch to HM-7 or HM-X at 15x would reduce gain by 2.5 dB

Thank you all for your input .

I have a Rothwell headspace headamp on its way to me . The adjustable gain should be great for me , keeping my fingers crossed it sounds ok . The Hashimoto's are a hard act to follow .

The Headspace is an excellent product, extremely flexible. Be interesting to see if it gives you what you want.

I've been using the headspace over the weekend , it's a fantastic bit of kit . To my ears the SQ isn't quite up there with the Hahimoto's but I feel that is a personal preference , I do like the SUT's bold midrange presence others may prefer the Headspace's neutrality . Horses for courses and all that .

What I have found out is that part of the problem lies with the input sensitivity of my amp and both the headamp and the SUT work better ( in my system ) with 10dB attenuator plugs . Although the SUT is still a bit too hot , maybe a 15 dB reduction would be better .

Looks like you need to get Dave Slagle to make you a custom SUT: http://myemia.com/SUT.html. I've got one of his silver ones for my Io, it's very good!

The Denon AU300LC is 1:10 according to my old SUT notes. Not in the league of the HM3 though.

Hi,

I hope that the OP allows a slightly off topic question?

Out of interest, can anyone of you say how a lundahl ll1931 or ll1933 would fare against some of the SUTs mentioned in this thread?

I know, not in the same league at least price vise nor 1:10 and actually not even an assembled SUT but the transformers are said to be very good.
