for me though the problem with old all be it "hi end" amps is that the caps are going to be a little tired if they are original and would need replacing, not a bad thing and to be honest is worth while doing but and here's the thing on ebay you can end up paying top dollar for an old amp due to it's past reputation, but then you will need to spend £200 plus on new caps, all of a sudden the old amp doesn't look so atractive, if you can get a bargin like the Trio Andre got, then you don't mind spending a few quid on caps, at the end of the day you can end up spending more on a vintage (if that's the right word) amp and re cap than what it actually cost when it was new. A sobering thought i'm sure you'll agree

Indeed. There's no problem paying, say £200, for a vintage amp in good condition, then spending perhaps the same again on caps, etc, and ending up with an amp that, in sonic terms, could compete with designs today costing £2k! ;)
Almost every part of my system has been assembled on that philosophy, with superb results. This is SPPV at its best.
Yes, if you're just after an out-and-out bargain at low cost, what you say makes sense, but some people will want to aim higher, and at the end of the day still end up with a bargain, albeit a slightly more expensive one :cool:

It will also require half a dozed trim pots being replaced as well as having DC offset and biasing reset.
Reminds me, I saw the inside of a 1st generation Hitachi CD player. The number of trim pots was astounding! Clearly lots of discrete electronics requiring trimming rather than the half a dozen integrated chips that is more usual now. Avoid unless you have the full service manual and an oscilloscope.

The Luxman - yes please, but then I'm a bit of a one for receivers. These were regularly going for £70 just 3 years ago.
By the way, it's big (19 1/4" wide X 17" deep) and won't fit properly in a normal rack, so you should bear that in mind.
Hi Chris .... Wow .. that is even better .. I am not going to hide it away in a rack .. ;) .... I like receivers too. I just got my Nak 730 receiver back from an eminent contributor to this forum .. he managed to bring it back to life when it had been practically all over the country (including Nakamichi) and they all gave up on it. It sounds tight and lean and to my eyes is a beaut .. I think it will end up in a prominent place somewhere . :stalks: ......... however .. it may bid quite high .. and that is why I was asking folks here how good they thought it might be .. Is it worth say 300 quid's worth of sound quality in today's terms for instance ? But I just love it's retro looks and wooden surrounds ..
Brian, just a small point, where exactly is the Valley of the Swale? :)

I'm afraid that out with of the areas I've lived in or visited, my knowledge of UK geography is painfully lacking.
However, do remember that AoS is an international site, and so someone from, say, Brunei or Australia (or even Wrexham, haha!), may not know where the 'Valley of the Swale' is...... ;)
Therefore, if I were you, I'd add 'North Yorkshire' to the location on your profile.

And yes to German Ebay .. it's funny how it does not get included in a World search on Ebay .. I found that with watches .. If ever you want a Maurice Lacroix or Steinhart watch then go on German ebay ,.. they are more plentiful and cheaper than UK.
However I find the converse is true with hifi ... Vintage stuff can go for a fortune over there .. but I will have a browse before I push the button on the Luxman hehe!
Any hints on sound quality between this beast of a Sansui and the Lux ,,,, I'm off to Google ........... :scratch:

I'd second the vote for German Ebay too, but make sure the seller will take Paypal if that's your preferred method. Many will take it from UK buyers, but don't mention that on their listings, but you don't want to get caught out by the ones that won't.
That G-series Sansui is nice, but I prefer the X0X0 series. Many wouldn't agree with me though.

Fifty notes is a bargain. I am sure it can be impreved upon.
Its started to pop a bit on one channel and guy will not take it back only will exchange I need to check out where I stand on this one

The listing does state they are "grade B". You might have to take the exchange.
That's a real coincidence as I stumbled across that amp on ebay, wondered if any one on here had any experience of them, and if at £50 it was too good to be true... Guess that answers the question, John. :(

I sure i had one of those without the wood sleeve, i was my first seperates amp, i think mine had an orange power button :scratch:

At £260 for a pair of 15XRs I think you lost.. in my own opinion of course.
Fair play to the Hi-FiHouse seller - he takes good photos and gets prices way over average.
Many, many of the £50 - £90 15XRs are also just as mint and the only thing that holds the prices back are that the seller doesn't have a dealer-like reputation, the photos taken and the shipping options (i.e. many are collection only and bidding is restricted to UK only bidders).
You need to be more canny in my opinion although of course many people do give value to having it all served up on a plate for them and so willing to pay over twice what you need. Personally that's not my way, hence my opinion.

Little Trio 'KA2000A' arrived yesterday spent all morning cleaning it up, It's come up beautiful, aluminium facia with brushed stainless laminate on top, it now wants a tiny bit of work on the black strip, a bit of paints away right at the bottom (you can just see it), like they do but no worries.I spent more time on the knobs with the electric toothbrush n' washing up liquid.. :lolsign: It's a minter now tho..

Sure. I can't argue with any of that :)
However, as far as I'm concerned, I won, because I've got a lovely mint (yes, mint, lol) pair of vintage speakers, which not only sound fantastic and outperform most modern stand-mount speakers, far in excess of what the Celestions cost me, but look great in the traditional setting of the lounge in our 19th century lodge.
The £260 I paid may indeed be 'over the odds', but those particular Celestions ticked all the right boxes for me, and to be honest, I've got cables in my system which cost more, so price wasn't an issue.
I listen to them every day and they give Del and I a great amount of enjoyment when listening to our favourite music, so for me, it's a win-win all round! :cool:

Just won a loverly pair of vintage ROSS RE-272 headphones, don't know what they are like but at £18 thought i'd have a stab, look loverly quality anyway,excellent condition.. certainly right up my avenue styling wise.. so that's a start.. :eyebrows:

Well there has been a spate of THESE (http://www.superfi.co.uk/index.cfm/page/moreinfo.cfm/Product_ID/145) on Ebay recently .. so going very cheap at the moment ,,, there is one still to go that will probably fetch around the same .. I would have thought that for a tad over 50 quid ( including postage) somebody wanting to get started with an AV sysytem and keep their main frontline cannot go too far wrong. ................... ie ....... As a bit of background, I was "dragged up" in Norwich, where RAM were based, and so for nostalgic reasons, fancied a pair of these. They will probably be used in my sub-£100 Cheap As Chips Challenge entry - but it will be interesting to see how they sound, and of course, you ain't in with the in crowd around these parts unless you have a Techie Turntable, Caiman DAC, Mark Grant cables and the latest must-have - ABRs! I reckon they will be a bit of a bargain, but who knows?
(Anyone got a spare RAM badge tucked away in a draw, BTW?)

Great price, Mike. You can't really go wrong with a deal like that. I've burned hi-res files to DVD-A, works a treat. There are also some superb SACDs to be had, worth looking for titles you might want.

It's in absolute mint condition too, it really knocks spots off my old Pioneer CD player.
it may end up in my sub £100 set up along with the Trio KA-80 amp i got recently, took the top off the amp when it arrived and to be honnest they don't make um like they used to springs to mind, for what i guess at the time would have been a mid range jap box, it's got 2 transformers 1 for each channel i guess, a nice simple PSB which strangly is mounted upside down so all the components are the wrong way up, but it does mean that they suffer much less with dust, and the face plate is a nice slab of brushed aluminium, and it sounds really good too, all in all i'm a very happy bunny:)

My friend asked the seller of Rogers badges if he could do some RAM ones from a photo. He said yes, they were bought outside ebay, but subsequently, the badge maker listed a pair on ebay. The badges were pretty good, my friend was satisfied.

Only had a couple of hours to listen to these, but I must say, they are rather good. I don't think they will usurp my Spendors, but they are certainly a very good sounding pair of speakers, and at a pocket money price, well worth it.
The bass is definitely enhanced by the ABR's, and you can tell they are quality drivers (Audax tweeters, Dalesford Bass/Mid & ABR) - seem quite sturdy, too, and in very good nick.
Just now need a pair of Rola Celestions from the time they were made in Ipswich, and then I think my vintage speaker odyssey is over for a while!
