Helluva update.
https://blog.roonlabs.com/roon-1-7-valence/

Search is much faster now, feels a lot snappier and the algorithm that suggests new music is darned spooky.
Anyone else had a play?

Yep, would agree.... a massive improvement. Roon Radio is definitely spooky but very clever.

Still getting to grips with the other mods and especially the search facility. Finding things I didn’t even know existed.

All in all, everything appears to be better.

One new cool thing I’ve noticed is that when listening to any piece of music, a sidebar pops up, making album/artist suggestions on an album by album basis.
I wrongly thought the new “suggestions for you” feature was only on the Library Overview screen.

Very cool.

Can take a while to index your music Grant, especially if you have a lot.
Its a one shot deal though, just to initially build its Database.

Your laptops a speedy one I thought, should be plenty horsepower for it.
can be slow doing anything when it’s indexing the database, best let it do its thing.

Its awesome, think you’ll dig it.

still seems rediculously slow. it takes 5/6 secs to put a single album art in on a page. This pc is i5 2.50ghz with 6gb ram.. it should be more than adequete to run a music program surely?
its using only 5% cpu and 350mb memory. but its so slow.. like mollases in wintertime

something very wrong there, you more than meet minimum specs.
should run licketty split.

When you installed it, did you install it as Roon or Roon Server?
Be worth uninstalling it and installing Roon Server on your laptop instead.
My preferred way of using it is to use my phone or tablet as the controller, rather than operating it from the computer.

Be worth trying it this way, using the IOS or Android App, both very good.

ios needs 64 bit ipad. the android app works well enough and is faster but only on a phone.. its not getting any money if my pc cant run it. I put a ticket into support but nothing.
have to say for the money its not at races.
I installed it as roon I think. it was a 1 month free trial. My library isnt that big.. 1000 albums. Its been on for hrs. everytime i click cursor to move left or right no art comes up and it takes about a minute just to fill the one page. if i leave page and come back it does same.. after a click you have to wait for 15/20 secs min to get it to do anything again.

The slow load of yours sounds wrong, any time I've tried it it runs pretty fast.

I would tend to agree.

Install Roon Server on the laptop and Roon remote (Roon App) on anything else your using (phone / iPad etc).

I now run Roon Server on my NUC, but when I was using my Surface Laptop I installed both Roon Server and Roon Remote and used Roon Remote to control the music.

Something’s not right, Roon should run pretty quick. In fact, quicker than Jriver.

A silly ask, but hopefully your not running your laptop Wi-Fi?

Definitely a mystery this one Grant.

If you fancy a rematch with it, I can install and set it up next time I’m over?

I've reinstalled it. Will leave it on all night and see how it works in morning. Maybe the analysing takes longer than the jriver version (which u have to switch on)

Daft question...
your not running JRiver in the background are you?

If the server component of JRiver is on, that could affect what Roon is doing.
Check if JRiver service is running, if it is disable it in Task Manager.
See if that makes any odds.

Shouldn't be anything JRiver on in the background.
Roon works so well you can think of it as an “appliance”...it just works...so there’s some schennanigans going on somewhere.
Well worth getting it right mate.

I’m still mystified why its slow. The only difference I can see is that my NAS is networked, rather than USB 3 but USB 3 Transfer speeds are pretty quick.? And shouldn’t slow the system down.

I still think you need to install Roon Server though.

Hope you do succeed though. Perhaps once it’s indexed, all will be ok.

I dare say I could install it on the other laptop and use this o e as remote if there is an app for Windows.
Plays and works fine on android connected to the pc. Just the pc that is unable to scroll or do its job visually etc. It really should be able to do both. It's not using all that much resource according to windows

Not had a chance of trying version 1.7 yet.

@Grant, I've set up Roon Server on 3 (perhaps more?) different systems and, once the indexing is done, it is speedy even on relatively low end machines. I guess something strange on your system.

Let me know if you want me to have a look, I can remote desktop in. send me a whatsapp if you do.

When I trialled Roon first time I needed more time so I sent a message to Roon and they gave me a further 6 weeks (on top of the initial month).

struth

I've just tried roon as a server on my other faster pc and it worked fine. All set up in 20 mins.
Using the other pc as a remote it still won't work any better.
So it doesn't like my i5 2.5 ghz with 6gb of ram. Yet that is well over min spec.
Still takes 45secs to populate 10 covers on a page. And while it's doing that the program won't do anything else.
Although it's not overly stressing pc and it can be used for other things

I’m happily running Audirvana on a Mac mini.
It’s an old machine so also not sure if it’s good enough to run the software.

Exactly the same Gfx chip that’s in my Roon server, so it’s not that.
Couple of additional things to try.

Slow loading of album art etc could point to a data transfer issue, I know JRiver works fine, but Roon does things quite differently.
Your streaming from a usb hard drive?
Is it definitely running USB 3?
Try a different port, a different cable too.

Try a Network reset.
Everything off, computers, phones on airplane mode, router/modem off at the wall and any networking switches if you have any in your setup.
Enjoy a cup of coffee and come back to it after 10 mins or so.

Restart in this order.

1 Superhub, or equivalent on, let it boot up and get to it’s ready state.
2 Any network switches you may have
3 laptops on.
4 phones off airplane mode

Try Roon again.

fingers crossed!

Ok, Ive got to the root... Ive installed the 32 bit version and its now running fine. A few glitches. I occasionally get an odd noise, and it doesnt import my wma downloads that are on the disc for some reason(both jriver and AV do this no problem)

apparently there is a known issue with this card and the 64 bit version that dont play ball

Good news mate.
WMA, no support in Roon.

Now it’s working...

For funsies,
when listening to an album you like, go into the “Credits” tab?
Everyone who played on the album, down to the tea lady, is listed as a clickable link, which takes you to everything else they have worked on.
The Metadata is a big part of Roon’s M.O. and what makes it worth it to me.

Happy travels, always throws up, something unexpected and cool. :)

Odd as they come from Qobuz... they can be added from qobuz I think but come in as flac.

Edit.. No they can't be added. Very poor they won't use the format that a partner, qobuz uses. That's a major loss and a deal breaker

Ha I got abuse for not using a ssd.. Apparently its a must.

Bollocks!

A good hdd is well good enough. [emoji23]
Anyway I will have a play.
Initial thoughts are sound is no better than jriver tbh and it's less flexible.
Metadata is streets ahead tho.

Gazjam
24-11-2019, 12:44
Never used WMA, even the lossless codec.

Slightly smaller file size than Flac, but takes a lot longer to encode, and is a pain cos of that.
Flacs the way to go.
Been there, some that.

But it’s 1’s and zero’s...right?
Bit perfect is bit perfect...
etc.

uhm, no.
Not sure your laptops up to it Grant, but a lot of folk let Roon handle the UI and metadata, and use HQ Player (not free) to handle the audio side.
I don’t, as my Dac already upsamples everything before it does it’s magic.

Just a thought as a way of maybe getting best of both worlds.
Spendy though.

struth
24-11-2019, 12:56
The fast one would be. Its like greased lightning so probably would.
But so far I'm a little underwhelmed tbh. Barring the Metadata which is good, but not really a must for me.
I've done a few side by side versions in jriver, av and roon. Tbh there is little in any of them. AV is a bit like a poor man's roon visually although sounds maybe slightly better, maybe..
Jriver sounds about same. But it has a few extras that help.

if you go into the options section of jriver and paruse you will see what you can do that you cant in either of av or roon. Obviously it also rips, converts etc and adjustment of metadata is simple where the other 2 its not obvious you can do any of this.

Gazjam
24-11-2019, 13:57
Aside the CD ripping aspect, Roon does everything and so much more.
Right click on anything in Roon you get a whole heap of options.

Everythings editable.

Click on the volume icon in the bottom corner, can set yOur device up there...DSP, audio options and more.
Have a rummage around Grant, it’s all there.
Look at the “Focus” feature.

Roons all about discovering music, the Metadata and UI is untouched in my view.
We all like what we like, and Roon’s not cheap to be fair.

Metadata, Roon does it all for you, but importantly you can use your own existing Tags if you prefer.

I've been playing around with ver 1.7 of Roon and like the improvements. The Live Radio feature is very good. Already discovered loads of radio stations worth listening to a lot. The 'New Releases' feature is spot on. Very much tuned to my library and listening history. Searches and general latency much improved.

No sign of external access (outside my LAN) yet despite rumours it is in the pipeline. I guess difficult to implement (although JRiver has it). In any event I can access my Library from anywhere via Tidal.

Hi Edward, yes its not to attenuate but to increase beyond the 100%. in jriver you can add a few db if your playing to a fixed volume output like a bluetooth dongle and headphones. its especially healpful when the music is older and often not so loud. Not a huge issue but I do use it a lot in river.:)

Link to Android is gone again... most annoying and only happens with Roon. When this happened to me last week, when it showed the connect to another core I clicked on the 'need help' text that shows there you choose 'select another core' and then entered the following IP Address

255.255.255.255

If I remember correctly it then gives you the location of the core which in my case is my desktop PC, I connected to that and been no issues since [emoji106]

Ok it sometimes takes a few seconds to connect but at least it connects every time now [emoji4]

PS: in fact you can click on ' Choose another Core' does the same thing

Roon is indispensable for me now - and I think I had bought the lifetime subscription within 48 hours of starting the trial. Didn't use the whole 14 days.

It seems to be that an SSD boot drive for the software and database files, and HDD for music storage is the best option. (Was a bit flaky with music storage on a NAS in my set-up.)

For me it's the networked / multi-room aspect that's the killer feature. The Core PC runs my Marantz HD-DAC1 in the office system (mostly headphones), with a Bryston BDP-1USB as the "endpoint" on the big rig. Then Chromecast / Google speakers for casual use all around the house, and phones and tablets can also act as players for headphones, as well as remotes for music selection.

Rejoined Tidal on the Black Friday offer to try out all the 1.7 enhancements - and I really like the suggestions and Roon Radio even if I get angsty about rented music having equal footing with my owned rips and downloads. It's very clever though.

Crackin’ update to Roon 1.7 there, build 571.
Ipad users you may need to manually update through the App Store.

From the Roon blurb,

“The latest update of Roon is now rolling out, with bug fixes, performance improvements, and our new Recent Activity feature!
Recent Activity

Roon’s overview screen has always functioned as a kind of “home” screen, providing you with easy access to your recently added music and new releases recommended for you. If you liked an album enough to add it to your collection, Roon has always made sure it’s close to hand.
But we realize that not everyone listens in the same way, and with the latest Roon release, we wanted to make sure ‘overview’ was useful to those who spend their time listening to singles, playlists, or classical compositions, too.
Now, in addition to browsing recent library additions, your new ‘Recent Activity’ will also give you quick access to all sorts of content you’ve been listening to lately, including albums, playlists, artists, tracks, and compositions. So it’s easier than ever to find your latest music discoveries and more.”

Roons always had the History feature, showing what you’ve been playing, but it’s just a list.
This is much better and until you start using it you don’t realise how cool it is.
The best just got better...Use it all the time now,

This latest Roon update is fantastic.

I'd long given up on Tidal as a streaming service, mostly due to the fact that its 'recommendations' were at the opposite end of the musical spectrum to anything that actually appealed to me. I took the recent offer of £4 for 4 months just to see if things had moved on at all and upon opening the main application, 2 years down the line, I am STILL seeing the likes of Kanye West and Beyonce in the recommended list so I decided straight away that I would not be extending past the offer period.

Then along comes the Roon update and the new 'New releases for you' section of the Overview page is showing me stuff from Ezra Furman, Norah Jones, Iggy Pop, Sparks, King Gizzard, Jonathan Richman - All stuff that I'll be wanting to listen to. That is EXACTLY what I needed from Tidal and it's a major boost to Roon. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a busy afternoon of catching up...
