Hi
I have an Ortofon SPU Classic GM Mk2 available,it's been up to Johnnies for a clean and photo session, where it's been given a clean bill of health. Was going to have a fettle at Expert Stylus with a paratrace stylus and suspension rebuild to track at 2.2g,booking in July still available if buyer interested.
£300 Inc postage or may consider a trade for another cartridge like a Denon 103SA.
Cheers
Rob

Nice one Marco!:)

I very nearly snapped this up myself over on the Wam a couple of days ago. Kicking myself a little that I didn't tbh , but having just shelled out for a new bathroom funds are tight this month. :(

I will look forward to your views on the SPU compared to your 103SA!

Enjoy it mate.

Hi Alfie,

Cheers, matey. Well as I've already got a 'cooking' 103, which still sounds superb through the A23, I thought I'd add another different sonic flavour to my cartridge collection - and I've always fancied an SPU!

All I need to do now is have an SUT built to match it, as the A23 won't be compatible....

I quite fancy a bespoke one using top-notch Sowter transformers, and I know just the man for the job! :)

The SUT was one of the things that held me back having just got my 103 A23 SUT.

Knowing how well the A23 works with the 103 I'd also look at the SPU A23! I think darrenw uses an SPU & A23 so you could perhaps work out a listen to his combo!

Sowter transformers would no doubt be a good choice though or a pair of Partridges!

P.S. Get the cooking 103 nuded & in a wooden body, either UWEs or the Stereo Lab one! Or even better a 103R, I think it wouldn't be to far from your old SA!

Hi Rob,

Has it arrived ok, and if so, have you tried it yet?

Still *LOVING* the SPU! :) :)

I thought A23 did a SUT for the SPU!

They do indeed, Andre, but I'm going to have a bespoke one built from scratch to my sonic and electrical specifications, so it'll be voiced to suit my system and tastes :)

It'll have the high gain needed for its vanishingly low output, loading impedance optimised (judged initially by ear) and a sonic signature which majors on wide-open clarity and high-frequency detail retrieval.

This will hopefully synergise with the SPU's gorgeously rich tone and beguiling midrange expressiveness/musicality to create something rather special!

Hi Marco
Yep fitted and playing, running in a SME M2 12R,might need a spacer for VTA though.
Strangely think it's a step up from the SPU,could never get it sounding any good, glad you're enjoying it
NB - tried everything even adding extra mass to the SPU,effective mass of the SME is 18g,where did I go wrong :)

Hi Rob,

Glad the SA is hitting the spot - it was a cartridge I enjoyed very much! :)

Lol - I don't think you did anything wrong.

It's probably just the case that it suits my set-up more than yours, I suspect mainly because of the tonearm, which is virtually identical to the Ortofon TA-100 Jelco make for them, and which is specified by Ortofon for the SPU.

Have a look at page 65 of the July edition of HFW, and you'll see a picture of an SPU fitted to one.

Much too will depend on the sonic signatures of our respective phono stages and how they suit the SPU. However, the bottom line is we've both got an upgrade out of it!

Yes, I'm very much enjoying the SPU, but there's BAGS more still to come when I optimise it with the right SUT.

Hi Marco ,you'll have to sell me or give me a lend of the Auditorium SUT to give me a taste of things to come ;)

Hi Rob,

I can lend it to you no problem, but I'll need it to use with my stock 103 when I have it 're-shelled' in something suitably exotic..... :)

Next up is a Decca!

Marco.
