Marco. No I know and I know about super accelerating cars to a point, but majority just get stopped again.
It can also cause accidents in the majorities hands as they are not good enough drivers

Marco
08-11-2019, 22:26
Yes, but none of that is the car's fault!;)

So.... Given a good driver, who can handle a car that goes "silly quick", safely, there's still plenty of point in owning such a car, particularly if said driver wants to have some FUN, and has access to roads where such is still possible [count me in]...:)

The government and the rest of the authorities are doing their level best to suck all the fun/pleasure out of driving, by building boring, soulless electric cars, and making the roads themselves (full of speed cameras, speed bumps, etc), as 'anti-fun' as possible:rolleyes:

Well, I for one will be continuing to rebel against that, and so vow that any car I'll be driving, for the remainder of my driving career, will first and foremost be designed to put a BIG GRIN on my chops - and to fuck with all else!!:D

Life's too short, and I refuse to be a manipulated puppet of 'the system', so Alfa Giulia here we come....

I've no real issue with good drivers who have enough sense as to where and when it appropriate. I'm sure you are in that group as your a careful person.
But the vast majority who do buy them are just dicks tbh and race about just because they have a fast car.

Marco
08-11-2019, 22:48
Yes, I fully agree, but you're missing the point, mate. None of that is the car's fault, is it?

You said:

I must say I don't see point in cars that go silly quick.

Well, forget the bad drivers, I've just outlined a very valid point for said cars existing: i.e so that folks like me, who are good drivers and can handle them safely, can *have some fun*:)

What they want to do then, is vet the type of folk who are permitted to own such cars [so that it's not simply based on the contents of their wallets], and make them pass a test to show that they're competent to drive them FIRST, before being allowed to have the keys!;)

Marco.

struth
08-11-2019, 22:56
I didn't say it was the cars fault. Just that there are so few roads now and so few people good enough drivers with enough sense to know when to have their fun that there is little point in having them. I agree that buyers of performance cars etc should have special tests on ability and road sense

struth
08-11-2019, 22:59
So it's up to govt to make sure buyers are up to it, and in a big way. It should also mean extra training.
This would help reduce accidents

Marco
08-11-2019, 23:05
Yes, so you son't penalise folk who are able to handle performance cars properly, by stopping "silly quick" cars from being built; you take appropriate steps to ensure that "silly quick" cars can only be owned and driven by suitably competent drivers!

*That* is my point:)

Plus, if you live pretty much anywhere in Wales, outside of the built up areas around Cardiff and Swansea, or many parts of rural Scotland and Ireland, there are still plenty of roads to have fun on with a fast car (within speed limits).

Marco.

08-11-2019, 23:12
I never really said otherwise. But the rds are becoming so overcrowded now speed will have to become a consideration unless we reduce traffic.
Let's face it. Half the cars on Rd are driven by people I wouldnt put in charge of a pushchair ffs.
The other half are trying to avoid being hit by them.
General standards of driving are abysmal quite frankly.

Gonna be fun when all automated cars try and share roads with all these arse holes lol. Be even more crashes and robots commiting hari kiri

Lol - you did. You said that you didn't see the point in cars that go "silly quick", and I've just outlined a very clear point!;)

Plus, as I said, there are still plenty of roads in the UK that aren't overcrowded. Honestly mate, if I go 20 mins outside of Wrexham, and head out into the sticks, I can drive on roads for miles and hardly see another car, pretty much at any time of the day {never mind if I lived in, say, West Wales, which is much more remote], and you can still do that in many parts of Scotland, too!:)

It's really only in or near big cities, and around the 'central belts' of the UK, particularly in the south of England, where roads are really overcrowded.

Anyway, returning to the thread topic, look how much things have changed in 11 years... Here's my Brabster, from 2008 (although mine is a near-dentical 2009 model):

Caterham used to insist that potential owners took a performance driving course (included in the price of the car) before letting them have their quickest cars. Don't know if this still happens

Apparently Porsche make their mechanics pass an advanced driving course before allowing them to road test cars. They're happy to sell them to any numpty with a fat wallet though

Golf R's are lovely. I've always been a big Golf fan, but you're on your own with that Brabster (looks wise, especially the interior) it is just a gross, OTT bling-fest, and sadly the way that the most expensive cars made now are going, simply to cater for the 'look at me', key-jangler set they're aimed at. All show, no class!

The prime example of this is the state of new Rolls Royces - OMG, just *HORRIBLE*!!:spew:

However, the engineering of that Brabster, especially of the engine, will be in the highest rank, but that doesn't save it from being an epic fail. Sadly though, that blingy look is also the way ordinary, affordable Mercs are going, which is why my next car will be an Alfa, not a Merc:)

Indeed! too blingy / hairy chested and a bit medallion man - lol, needs toning down. I wouldn't have one even if they did tone it down (and I had the dough) though.

Too big for a little fella like me anyway, hence it'd be a dark coloured Golf R, (Metallic Black or grey type) with the 19inch Pretoria alloys, full black leather, with maybe touches of alcantara suede, maybe some subtle dark carbon fibre touches too - job done !

Plus, if you live pretty much anywhere in Wales, outside of the built up areas around Cardiff and Swansea, or many parts of rural Scotland and Ireland, there are still plenty of roads to have fun on with a fast car (within speed limits). Not quite sure what “having fun” means in this context.

Racing - illegal in the UK on public roads.
Cornering - driving round bends too fast so that there’s a skid risk.
Going round blind bends or over blind summits in such a way as to enjoy the Russian roulette flavour.
Stick fingers up at cop cars then try to get away, or see if they’ll send helicopters after you.
See how many speed cameras you can dodge without getting a speeding ticket.
See how many speeding tickets (or worse) you can get in a day.
Seeing if you can get the tyres to spin, or burn from a standing start.
Wait for the winter, then try using the roads as a skid pan.
Go as fast as you can towards a junction, then see if you can stop before going over the line.
Seeing how many red lights you can go through in a day. Some people are chicken, and go through on orange!

Also, many people don’t realise that the speed limit on many UK roads is actually 60 mph, not 70 mph.

Boring world, isn’t it - but the roads are for ordinary people to drive safely and effectively.

One kind of fun which some people enjoy is driving a convertible with the roof down. It gives a heightened sense of speed, due to the extra noise. In the summer it can be fun.
It’s one of the few forms which isn’t actually illegal or considered too dangerous.

struth

sure you can have fun without endangering folk or property. a time and place, and with a sensible head on.

Marco
09-11-2019, 15:14
Are you always this boring, Dave, and known locally as 'Captain Killjoy'?:D;)

'Having fun" is of course entirely subjective.

However, the context in which I'm referring to it is, driving fast (but safely and within speed limits) on largely empty, winding country roads [yes the corners are the real FUN bits:eyebrows:], in a car that is set up to handle well at speed when going round corners [stiff sports suspension, wide low-profile tyres, uprated brakes, etc, etc], whilst listening to your favourite tunes on a superb sounding car-audio system, or with no music on, and simply enjoying the 'growl' of the engine (through a fat-assed quad SS exhaust system), as you accelerate through the gears...

And the fact that the latter simply doesn't happen with electric cars, is one of the main reasons why I'm so against them!

And even though my car is far from perfect for the described purpose, it's still a HOOT to sit in, and feel the surge and power from the engine (delivering in excess of 300bhp), as you accelerate hard on the straights, and (in good weather conditions) throw around corners on near-empty country roads, of which thankfully there are plenty near me:cool:

Life's too short not to have some FUN, of any description, in a car or otherwise!

Marco [LIVES his life, rather than merely exists].

I suspect a lot of the comments were made by drivers who like to sit in the far lane doing 75mph, or not much more. The number of times I have seen cars join a motorway and automatically go over to the outside lane and just sit there thinking it is their right.

Great thing about Scotland is you only get 2 lanes so it's not an option. There is usually a queue in lane 2 at busy times as a van or lorry wants to go 1 mph faster than the lorry in front thus causes chaos.
Tbh up here that is the biggest issue

Absolutely, and that's just as bad as middle-lane hogging. NO lane on a motorway should be hogged - the whole point is to use the full width of the motorway (all the lanes), if necessary, depending on traffic conditions and how fast you wish to go, not sit there, rigidly, in the one lane for the entire duration of your journey!

You need to be willing to MOVE and REACT/ADJUST to the prevailing conditions, and also respect the fact that you're sharing the space with other road users, and who may wish to drive at a different speed from you, especially in the 'fast lane', and allow them to do that.

It's not your job to impede their progress, just because you don't think they should be going faster than you!

Any reason why?
Shame you're not closer to me as i'd take you out in a C63S, E63S or when we get one in, a GT R.
But, i will say that the build quality was a country mile better on the old Mercs than it is now.

There's your answer;)

And also because they look too 'aggressive', in the wrong way, in terms of exterior styling, and way too blingy on the inside! For me, since Mercedes tried to design cars to appeal to 'youngsters' [compete with BMW in that respect], and got it badly wrong, they've never really hit the spot. They should've stuck to what they were good at instead.

Don't get me wrong, I still rate C63AMGs, but more from the era of my Brabster, than the current ones, as I much prefer the older shape.

Less to do with cost-cutting, more to do with health and safety. It was found that even at low speeds (not enough to kill or badly injure a pedestrian on impact), injuries could still occur with the victim being thrown up onto the bonnet and impaling themselves on the emblem/badge. I imagine the Jaguar 'jaguar' would have been perfect for that!

Marco
09-11-2019, 21:33
Ah, health and safety spoil all the fun again... The secret I guess, is to try and not hit anyone!;)

The old Merc badge wasn't rigid though, so used to move when pushed, plus it was a rounded shape, so it's difficult to see how that could've injured anyone.

Marco.

struth
09-11-2019, 21:36
They had recoiled badges I thought, though may still cause injury I guess. But getting hit by 30cwt of metal causes plenty damage too. Again speed is the biggest killer. 20mph strike does so much less damage than 30 in pedestrian strikes.

Only been in it once and it was painful for me at its height and low roof. But I needed a lift at time. Put me in bed for 2 days lol.
The c class is a bit easier but still too low.
One of my main criteria is can I get in and out without it hurting too much.
The toyota isn't perfect but it's better than 95%. Others were too high. Climbing up is just as difficult and tbh downright unnecessarily

Each to his or her own I guess, but I'm just not into Lexus. And most cars, once they're used, are as reliable as they're looked after and maintained by their owners!;)

Quite a few of my friends have owned BMWs for years, and never had any trouble with them, but they've always been regularly serviced/tuned and maintained, because they were driven by car enthusiasts, not just folk who simply see cars as a method of getting from 'A to B'.....
