It’ll be to do with the fires and fireworks, but also it was cold overnight and fairly clear (ie. little cloud, just foggy) so that will have caused some of it too

Yeah it was a strange one - driving from Preston to Chorley this morning, foggy in Preston, clear and a bit sunny at Walton Summit, then foggy again in Chorley :scratch: And there was a bit of a burnt smell hanging in the air.
Rained a good bit yesterday but was torrential most of today.
Was on motorway and it was near aquaplane levels, yet so many idiots overtaking at 70+ in the wetter fast lane.
Disgrace that.. Should lose there licences

Have you noticed how all the fast lane loonies bunch up and tailgate each other. They go sailing past in convoy at about 90mph with about fifteen feet between each car and each one wanting to be at the front.
I had my advanced speed controller on at 50 and radar at max distance. Works very well too.

No cure, my washing machine (Anita) has learned to live with it. But I've found that chopping up the emerging nuggets with the blunt end of a pencil can help.

Very wet this morning

About 3c and wet, not too nice
7C here today, but feels a little colder, due to the windchill factor, but dry and no sign of rain.
Taking my dad out today for lunch, to proper 'Welsh Wales', where there is some stunning countryside, including one of our favourite country pubs: https://www.thewestarms.com/find-us/
And yes, *that* still part of the county of Wrexham! Not just a town, but a county...;)
He loves it there because the food is great and you can eat right next to a lovely roaring log fire. It's the perfect weather for that, so looking forward to it!:cool:

yup, nice. no quaint stuff on my doorstep , or not much now. Plenty countryside but its kinda lost much of its character
Shame... If you ever make it down here in the summer, I'll take you there, as it's just lovely. So peaceful, the air is very fresh and clean, and you just feel alive!:)
Btw, there's a stream running right in front of the pub, which has some great trout. That's usually on the menu, and it doesn't get much fresher! Absolutely gorgeous... Dunno if you're much of a fish fan, though....

trout, you bet, but head off:lol:. have trout fillet a lot..salmon too.both my grandfathers were river fishers.. one on the Dee/Don up in Aberdeen and the other on the Tweed(although I think he was a bit of a poacher);)

Anyway, had a really lovely lunch with my dad. It's been a while since we've eaten at The West Arms, and the food is now better than ever (new chef). Unfortunately I didn't have Del's smartphone with me, so couldn't take any pics...
However, we both started with homemade leek and potato soup, which came with their own homemade herb bread, and also butter! The butter had bits of rock salt in, and was arguably the best I've ever tasted!:)
Then we both had the same main course of breast of local pheasant (we passed a few on the road there:D) wrapped in pancetta, with a cider/cream sauce, served with savoy cabbage and dauphinoise potatoes. It was superb, and washed down with a pint of T-Wrex ale, from a brewery in Wrexham that until now I didn't even know existed! See here: http://www.bighandbrewing.co.uk/

Like the sound of that lunch Marco, although I would be having wine not beer.
Lol - I get enough (much better wine) at home, mate, and far cheaper, but don't have access to lovely real-ales on draught;)
I know you're a lager man, though, but you can see my logic. Essentially, I object to the mark-ups on wine in UK pubs and restaurants, with 'large' glasses of decent wine (stuff that I'd actually drink) frequently costing £7-8, and of course because it's served in a 'posh' wine glass, it's only ever half-full!:eek:
For £8, I could buy a superb WHOLE BOTTLE of wine, which I can enjoy in the comfort of my own home, without worrying about driving... And full bottles of wine, which are often no more than of average quality, in good pubs and restaurants, are usually around the £18 mark, or much more, which for me goes against the grain, as it doesn't offer value for money.
Quality draught beer, especially stuff brewed locally in the town I live in, has an altogether different appeal, and isn't stupidly priced. See where I'm coming from?:)

First trout I ever caught was a heady 6 ounces. No way was I putting it back though, it went home with me :) Very nice it was too, but I needed a pudding after.

A couple of years ago I walked down to the local Spar shop for a few groceries. It was a freezing cold morning in January, and though the pavements had been gritted, it was still pretty treacherous. Anyway, when I emerged from the shop I went arse over tits on the ice, and my groceries went everywhere, my half pound of Lurpak flying the furthest. When I got home I made some soup, served with buttered crusty bread. Lovely! The butter had bits of rock salt in it, and was arguably the best I've ever tasted.

This is Planet Rock, where Rock lives, and daft buggers pick us up! We don't like being lifted, so we make ourselves heavy to put people off. But some folk won't take the hint :eek: Only kidding mate, and that is seriously large gravel - how much does it weigh? And can I have it for my rockery? :D
Don't know if you're aware of it but there's a show called "Strongest Man in History" showing on the History Channel Sunday nights, with Eddie hall, Brian Shaw and a couple of others. Quite interesting. But that Brian Shaw, he likes his food :eek: You'd rather keep him for a week than a fortnight

Don't know if you're aware of it but there's a show called "Strongest Man in History" showing on the History Channel Sunday nights, with Eddie hall, Brian Shaw and a couple of others. Quite interesting. But that Brian Shaw, he likes his food :eek: You'd rather keep him for a week than a fortnight

That little lump weighs 154kg and can be a swine to lift at times as it's quite polished; it's 20kg heavier than I am!
I've already seen the show thanks; it was on Youtube via the History channel and TBH it was a bit embarrassing... I'm not Hall's biggest fan, Shaw's a good guy, Oberst is a bit pathetic really and only really a strong presser, everything else 'hurts' :doh:

Hmm. I'd have lifted that when I was younger and I'm only a little guy. Mind you, as a mason pavior, I was a skilled kerb stone layer, laid miles of the stuff and used to cart granite kerb around each day. That weighs 1 hundredweight per foot on average.

We've got a few old kerbstones lying around; they're solid lumps, great for lifting but they bite; sharp edges that cut right into you!
I've pressed the 110kg kerbstone we've got overhead, but won't rush to do it again haha :lol:

Big round stones are nasty, generally smooth as hell and like to slip around; bit like this:

Back to the crap weather - Was in the Lake District today, it was a cloudy 3c, with a bit of white stuff atop Saddleback and the Coniston Fells. You could just about make out the odd hardy soul dotting the peaks. Some right nutters out there :scratch:

I've stuck a short post (stump?) on the wine, beer etc recommendations thread elsewhere. Food was pretty standard pub fare, but nicely done - I just had their steak and ale pie cos I'm adventurous that way, but my extensive experience of that particular dish told me that theirs was definitely above average. Anita's choice, some sort of steak melt sandwich was good too, although she struggled a bit due to some dental work yesterday.
Downsides of the pub were that it was tiny, so rather 'intimate'. And due to it being 'dog-friendly' (most places up there are) the racket was as bad as those family friendly places with screaming kids running around...
Nice one. Steak and Ale pie, if done right from scratch (which I'm sure yours was) is great.
Shame about the racket, although I love dogs. It's interesting though, as I firmly believe (rather like kids) that dogs, if properly brought up and trained, exhibit the behavioural traits/habits that their owners have instilled in them, and so rowdy dogs often reflect rowdy owners, or ones who haven't trained their dogs properly.
We go to loads of country pubs round here, which are dog-friendly, and you never hear a peep out of the dogs. They just sit quietly beside their owners, whilst they enjoy a meal, and perhaps have a bowl of water in front of them, and so they're invariably impeccably behaved, which is how it should be.
That's one thing that puts us off the lakes, beautiful as they are, the surrounding towns and areas are often overcrowded, and of course that applies to the shops and pubs, especially with walkers, during the tourist season - you can't move for the buggers, particularly in places such as Keswick. To get some peace and quiet, you need to go off the beaten track a bit more.
However, it's a bit of a catch 22, as if you want to go shopping you need to be near towns, but if Anita and you fancy getting away from it all sometime, when shopping isn't in the equation, I'd thoroughly recommend visiting Snowdonia, where the scenery is just as stunning as that in the lakes, but rather more rugged, and the mountain ranges are simply spectacular, with no rowdy crowds. You'll generally have the place pretty much to yourselves, unless you go right in the middle of the tourist season.
If you ever fancy it, I could give you some good reccos of where to go and see:cool:

We were at the other end of the pub so didn't see much, but as far as I can tell they did nothing. Certainly the racket went on for some time. Staff should have kicked 'em out. As with a lot of things, I wasn't really bothered by it. As long as they don't snatch me food or do a turd near me it's all good. Maybe if just the owners had been slung out the dogs would have got on with each other.

Currently -2c and frosty
We were at the other end of the pub so didn't see much, but as far as I can tell they did nothing. Certainly the racket went on for some time. Staff should have kicked 'em out. As with a lot of things, I wasn't really bothered by it. As long as they don't snatch me food or do a turd near me it's all good. Maybe if just the owners had been slung out the dogs would have got on with each other.
Probably! Does my head in though, how some dog owners don't take responsibility for their animals, especially in public places.
If one of them had been my dog, I'd have been trying to get it to calm down, and doing whatever it took for that to happen, or if necessary, taken it outside for a bit until it calmed down, and apologising to people there, trying to have a quiet meal, whom the noise had disturbed.
You don't just sit there, and say 'fuck it' - and the same also applies to unruly children and their parents!

It's very depressing here, rain rain and did I say rain :(
Been drizzly on and off, but very mild - car said it was 13.5 c at around 14:30 and not supposed to drop below 10c overnight - no fire for me again tonight, but looks like a cold blast coming in at the end of the week.

It was 12C here, earlier (10C now), but we've still got the log burner roaring away, simply because it makes the room cosier and more inviting... Regardless of the temp now, our fire will be on every day throughout winter, right through into March at least:)

Gets too warm for me, even just burning logs. I guess us country folk (for all of two months! :eyebrows: ) are hardy perhaps! Sue was complaining she was freezing earlier when I was ferrying stuff into the garage in a T-shirt so I expect she’ll want me to light it later. Definitely very cosy I must admit, and I love just “fire watching” with a bit of chillout on. :)
Yups... For me, that last bit is enough reason to light it. As a general rule, once the outside temperature gets below 15C, we light the fire:)
We're going to start cooking chestnuts and stuff on top of ours over Christmas - I even use it to heat up the Moka pot now, when making coffee... May as well, is all 'free heat'!:cool:

Well, there was a cheeky glass of Old Vines Tempranillo. :)
TV is 65" - dominates the room a bit more than it did in the last house where it's placed, might revisit that once the flooring is done. Previous owners had theirs above the fire (the wiring is al hidden behind the picture) but it was a smaller screen and whilst our would just fit, it wouldn't look right.

Looks like a larger version ofmy Sony, save mine is about a third of the screen area. I don't need anything larger: when not in use, I find it to be a large and ugly looking grey slab. But I do like the narrow 'escutcheon' and shallow depth of the screen.

We didn’t have an indoor toilet until I was about 12, although we did have a black and white tv.
My first memory of watching TV was when my parents took me to see some friends of theirs. They had a TV with a very small screen (something like 8" in size), but was fitted with an enormously thick (fluid filled?) lens, which magnified the picture to that of an 10 or 12" screen.
It was black and white of course, would have only received a single channel (BBC), and I think the programme I watched was a western.
We didn't get a TV until the mid '60s. It had a 17" screen using the, then, newly released 110 degree CRTs, so the set was shallower than those using the usual 90 degree tubes.
When I was doing postgraduate studies, I lodged with a family who had a 'Rediffusion' TV. This was a form of cable TV: a central antenna picked up the signal , amplified it and distributed it to customers via cable. In the house there would be a simple switch allowing you to choose one of up to four channels (BBC1 and 2, ITV and possibly ITV from another region). The picture quality was surprisingly good.

I know my aunt in the early 70 s still had an outside toilet... not sure about an indoor one though ?. We had a COLOUR tv late 60 s, GET me. Its raining btw.

Nobody in our street had a TV until the coronation in 1953. My dad bought one along with another neighbour and all the other neighours crammed our living rooms to watch the event. I remember seeing it all myself. If I recall, the TV screen was only about seven inches across.

I remember seeing my first colour TV in the late '60s. It was COLOUR, with capital letters, artificial and 'in your face'. I guess the colour was turned up so you could see it was a COLOUR TV, with everyone having Trump-like orange tans. :doh:
Interesting... No idea what my parents had, TV-wise, pre-1968, as it was before my time. I remember the black and white one we had was in a massive wooden cabinet. I also remember some of the early colour ones being valve-powered, and the TV repair man coming to visit, as they frequently failed.
I wonder how many nice old valves (GECs, Mullards and such like), suitable for hi-fi use, they used to carry in their vans?:)

Nah; 2hrs 5mins each way, Virgin Rail 1st class, £36 return. There for just after 10am Sat morning and train back is just after 7pm, so we'll be home and tucked up by 10pm haha ;)
We've done Edinburgh a lot, its lovely staying there. But we're going with both sets of folks and my sis in law, her husband and their girls. So just a treat for the day to us all :)

It takes me about 2 hours by train to reach Edinburgh although that does include a walk through Glasgow to change stations. Going through tomorrow but not by train on this occasion.
can take me 22 mins into waverley on train. if i can get on which i cant safely. by car if traffic is light i can be at western edge in under 20mins.. travelling through edinburgh can be a challenge tho.
not that i go now; it holds nowt i want tbh.
cleared here a bit.. 7c now and no mist now. not raining but ground is very wet, with more rain to come

Was a pretty chilly night, thick frost on everything this morning. Looked outside at 6.50am, and saw what might have been the International Space Station passing over at about 20 degrees from the horizon, but it only showed for a few seconds so more likely a satellite. As I pointed to Mrs P where it was, a shooting star flew across the sky. Not seen one of those since a camping holiday in Spain a few years ago.
Reached a high of 6C today - lovey crisp, fresh and sunny day, which was just my kind of weather!:)

Had the fire on since 11am... Got too hot this afternoon, felt sick haha. Doors opened to let some air circulate!
It's just blipping away now; dying down slowly with anneka's midden in front of it (ie. washing drying on the maidens) ;) Haven't used the tumble dryer now since September :D

It was a lovely day pal; the train journeys there & back were a bloody nightmare, got a full refund thankfully.
Christmas markets were lovely though; much bigger this year than they have been before, all round Waverley valley. But none on George Street or on St Andrews Square which was unusual.
Went up with both sets of folks and my sis-in-law (wifes sister) and her husband/girls. They've never been to Edinburgh before. So showed them George and Rose Street; some of the good pubs too (Queens Arms on Falkirk Street is a cracker) ;) Took them into Harvey Nics, took them into the Dome on George Street to see the decs and tree etc... Walked down back passed The Balmoral, over North Bridge and up the Royal Mile to the Castle and then back down to the markets again...
