Tube Rolling.

Hi guys,
Since my last post about my old Ortofon VMS20E, I’ve replace the stylus with an Ortofon VMS3E and she’s singing again.
My next plan is to change the valves (ECC83 / 12AX7) in my Project Tube Box.
Anybody done this and what would you recommend?

Telefunken ecc83s or Mullard cv4004 both extremely expensive and thought to be the best by many. I use both and are dependent upon equipment. Good luck with this one.

For a new budget one I rather liked the Sovtek 12AX7LPS I had in a pre a while ago.

Can only recommend Telefunken as they were the best (IMO) of any valve I tried, and that was MANY!

I have Mullards and Tele’s amongst others. Best I’ve heard are Tungsram foil getter with welded plates. A good pair of NOS of any of the well known quality makes should be good though.

Tesla ECC803S factory code 32 yellow print gold pin.

As good as the Telefunken ECC803S. I have owned both at the same time.Even made with the same tooling equipment.

Mid-80s Mullard CV4004 white box mil spec.

ECC803S is just a special quality ECC83.

Another Sovtek 12AX7LPS recommendation here as a cheapish new valve.
Keep an eye out for Ei ECC83 /12AX7s too. They have not been made for a few years now, but used Telefunken smooth plate tooling. They were often branded as Marshall, Edicron, RCA as well as Ei. So can still be found at reasonable prices if you know what to look for. They have a 2A1 etched code near the base...

ECC803S is just a special quality ECC83.... in the same way that a Bentley Continental is just a special quality Beetle...

If the main theme of the discussion had been about music, the place for the thread would've been in Musical Compositions. If the main theme had been cartridges, then it would've gone into Analogue Art (where cartridges, and everything relating to turntables, or other analogue source components, is discussed), and if the main theme is actually about tubes, then, as outlined, it should've been put here.

The main theme of the discussion dictates where threads should go. It's all about the main theme:)

Blank Canvas is for all hi-fi discussions out with of those covered by the dedicated sections underneath, or anything else that doesn't appear to have an obvious 'home'.

This stuff ain't rocket science, folks!

Try NOS Mazda ecc83's. They tend to be cheaper than old Mullards but sound much the same. I have 2 which I tried in my phono stage and they sound equally as good as my old shield Mullards.

If you have the valve that came with the Project even a new JJ or Tungsol ecc83 will sound better.

You will end up buying a selection like the rest of us anyway so just dip a toe depending on how much you want to spend.
