View Full Version : The US should blame themselves for the oil spill.
We passed laws forceing off shore drilling into deeper and deeper water when we could tap the same oil well in shallow water closer to shore.
As you move farther out the risk of something like this happening becomes far higher.
BP took full responcability and has had to battle our government for permission to try to cap it.
I think they should pull out and let the all knowing Obama cap it.
Thank you B.P. for stepping up to the plate and doing your best in a bad situation.I don't know of another company who could have done better,If it where a U.S. company they would have tied everything up in red tape and passed on the blame while hideing there assets.
We've seen what happens when a US company gets it wrong and what happens to them. Bhopa, 'nuff said. BP have already done more and spent loads more $.
With the "drill baby drill" culture such a disaster was bound to happen.
I wonder what will happen to plans to drill off the Falklands.

Yes, I missed the "l" off, I'm not a perfect typist or proof reader....this does not change the sentiment about these two incredibly serious incidents. Hopefully what I typed was understandable.
Drilling has become more safe but when drilling so deep there is going to be a risk.
The thing that torks me is it is being used for political gain by our POTUS.
He is makeing it worse by not allowing BP to work with the Army core of engenirs, not issueing permits to BP so they could build sand bars to contain some of the oil and villoniseing them.Like it or not the world needs petrol, mabey some day we won't but thats not yet.
There is a ton of money to be made in carbon credits and controling world wide industry in the name of global warming and BP is takeing a hit to further there agenda.
Obama has done more to hinder then help.
And threatened to "kick there A**).
He's like a manchild mentaly really.

Maybe they should get George in to sort it out, he's good at handling an environmental disaster & apparently he's got some knowledge of the oil business.
............on second thought, maybe not, he'd probably just bomb it........

I am not a huge fan of Gorge but the press held his feet to the fire on every issue and some made up issues aswell. If Goerge was presadent there would be 24 hour Bush Bashing right now and he would be called a bigger monster than Godzilla!
Just to inform you there is a plan they call going nuke that has been used in shallower water where they drill a hole next to the well, plant a bomb and collaps the wall of the well.Basicly blowing it up.
This has been used with great success since the 1960's but Obama has not let them do it,He also stopped operation TOP CAP.
He also has denied any help frpm US navy ships ect...
The main goal should be to contain the spill and stop the leak.
And argue politics sepratly at a later date.
If your babys drownding in the US you don't call the life guard or an ambulance to save there life when you can speed dial your lawer and get ritch,(THAT'S WHATS WRONG AND IT'S VERY WRONG WITH OUR COUNTRY RIGHT NOW)
I hope the UK still has common sense,I'd like to think there is still a place on the globe getting it right most of the time.

That is criminal, but differant from this in there wasen't any proven violation or intentional neglagence.
Or gross neglect.
Sometimes bad things happen when all seems to be going well it's called an accadent, the Bhopa gas disaster was just greed berore safety and thats criminal!

The oil disaster can be viewed the same way. The US govt are a contributor. If they'd thought or cared about the consequences of something going wrong 1 mile underwater they would not have granted a license to drill until they were sure such an accident could be dealt with. Greed by the authorities and oil companies has led to this disaster, it just so happens to have occurred with BP. The UK govt seem to be courting a similar disaster near the Falklands.
It would be smarter to drill closer to shore,This not in my backyard mentality is selfish.
If we are going to have to drill lets put common sence back in to play.

Well, I think there are few hundred million facts to back up the bashing. For starters, after starting the Iraq war under false pretenses, he went on and had Rumsfeld running it. Rumsfeld, a guy with zero armed forces experience, thought he could run the war in a new computer savvy way and at Walmart prices. We all know how that turned out. Oh, sorry, how it continues to turn out. Colin Powell was part of GW's administration but was ignored. GW put a horse trader in charge of FEMA whose response to Katrina is, umm, well documented. Shall I go on?

......and 10 years later the Gulf of Mexico will be the only body of water where the dolphins glow in the dark and the electric eels have grown so large that they can power 100 homes for a month. In fact, David Attenborough will film the next edition of Planet Earth using those eels as his only power source. No coal or oil will be used in the production of the entire documentary. Talk about environmentally friendly.
Kidding aside, the nuke option is being discussed, but to transfer a process that works in shallow water to deep water requires alot of re-working. You have to also take into account the geology to see if it would work or not in the gulf. These decisions can't come about over night. A mistake could compound the existing disaster immensely.

1960s? That was then, this is now. Also, you seem to take any opportunity to bash Obama at every turn and then say to argue politics later. Conflicted, are we?

I can't make out the situation with the state of the pipework & i know it's deep down but why not cut into the pipe further up & fit a shut off valve, fit it & leave it open to relieve the burst end of pressure, they can then cap off the end, when done shut off the valve they fitted! Easier said than done.

As I understand it, BP employ far more workers in the US than they do in the UK and also the shareholders appear to be almost 50% US too. Not really 'British' Petroleum any more then?
This might be of interest to all those proposing a solution to the oil blow-out in the Gulf:

It seems that André's suggestion might have worked had there been a sufficient vertical length of the riser.
Whatever is proposed, it won't be easy.

The pipe broke off pretty much right at the bottom, right at the blow out prevention valve, which, ironically, is a valve whose purpose was to seal off the well in case of a disaster on the rig.
Those live pictures you see on the news are right on top of the BOP, a mile under water. What you don't see are the incredible pressures associated with that environment.

Some of Obama's failures.Guess he didn't learn from all he claimed Bush did wrong.
And by the way the whole civilized world didn't want Sadam getting biological wepons and all the chemical wepons where sent to Syria before we got there.
At some point the world is going to have to stop monsters from becomming another Hitler or worse.

Looks like Obama might have something to answer for here.
