Misnomer by Linn Products? Or the pitfalls of not having had a classical education!

I notice Linn have called their latest moving coil cartridge amplifier the ‘Uphorik’. This is in keeping with the name of their last design, the ‘Urika’ and maintains Linn’s personalised spelling: replacing a ‘c’ with a ‘k’.

Clearly ‘Uphorik’ was meant to be the same as ‘euphoric’, the adjective of ‘euphoria’, meaning physical ‘well being’ or a good state of mind. Euphoria comes from the Greek εὐ, eu (good) + φέρειν, pherein (to bear or to carry).

However in spelling it in their own way, ‘uphorik’ supposedly being the adjective of ‘uphoria’, Linn are inadvertently doing their product and themselves down. Uphoria presumably comes from the Greek οὐ, ou (not) + φέρειν, pherein (to bear, carry or to convey), that is: ‘not conveyed’. What is it that is not conveyed - the musical message, PRaT, subtle detail, or stereo imaging?

'Uphorik'......pass the sik bag.......Linn's branding ethos/ USP- nearly everything being named 'K' is tired, laughable, boring, predictable, archaic and stuck in time warp imho... (and I speak as one who worked in Marketing for 10 ears)

At £1850, I should bloody well hope it is.

My comment concerned the ambiguity of Linn's spelling of 'euphoric'. If owners are not put into a state of euphoria by Linn's new phono stage, can they charge Linn with infringement of the Advertising Standards Authority's guidelines?

Will be interested in your findings. Haven't read the JH review, but I avoid reviews of Linn/Naim gear that have been carried out by 'groupies'!

Im looking at the Linn against my ARC PH5 and other phono amps, im looking to compare ahead of a possible final upgrade. I never ever take anything to heart by any of the linn/naim 'groupies'.....you know who:eyebrows:

seeing as the linn is pitched at the 2K mark its up against some real good kit imho.....and much is far less expensive.......

........ and much is a great deal more expensive too. Try & buy if you like it. Whatever anyone's feelings about Linn's alleged marketing behaviour, their products will, in today's market, stand on their own merits.
