The moderators and old guys know this and because of Filterlab's trying what I made for his speakers in the early stages of TAofSF tolerate me. Here is copy of a blog elsewhere to save my time and yours-

"I've been at this for a very long time and listen as much today as ever. I have a very large collection of LP's and compact disc's. Formerly, I listened using Acoustat Model Three electrostatic speakers (and a few others before that) with some SS monoblocks and an ARC tube pre but moving to a much smaller room necessitated my downsizing. I opted for some active Meridian M20's and they work about perfectly in my size room. I still use the same pre and phono stage. I did replace their factory stands to put their tweeters at about ear level. If you don't know, they are MTM configured.

One of the speakers I had owned were Rogers LS3/5a's and I remembered that they used felt around their tweeters. This was to keep waveforms from being redirected by the raised edges of their enclosures. Perhaps you can get an idea about what this would do to the truth contained in your recordings*. Dunlavy did this, too. I began reading about this and decided to apply felt pads around the tweeters of my Meridians. There was a noticable improvement on virtually every recording I played. Images seemed to shape up and where there was depth of field in a recording it became more obvious. Space expanded, in other words, and images appeared more three dimensionally and palpable. The measure of added realism to things was very exciting to me and continues to be. Transients are cleaner and detail finer and things sound more harmonically correct. It's the removal of diffraction effects and their summing in with what we hear that makes this possible.

Diffraction is the reflection of waveforms shorter than the width of speaker enclosures. I have found that it is best to do two things: 1) use a soft and absorbant material so the short and spreading waveforms are absorbed when they make contact**; 2) cover the entire culpable area to capture all of the bandwidth of waveforms shorter in length than the width of a speaker enclosure. An enclosure does not need to have raised edges, right or near right angles do the very same thing.

Very high grade organic wool is the proper material and it needs to be little deep. Synthetic substances or fiber cannot do the job that needs to be done. Inexpensive aftermarket products in the form of rings are nothing more than a bandaid or worse. One supplier's product is made from a cheap bouyant substance. And the only way to take the entire transaction out of the equation requires custom fitting to a specific speaker.

I do that and use a high grade of natural wool in sufficient depth. I fit to any shape of enclosure. There is testimony to the results with a variety of speakers you may read at my site and what I make recieved a Golden Ear Award from REG at TAS in '08. Yep, nice tweaks, but sadly not applicable to the Radialstrahler mids and treble of my MBL speakers.

Well worth a try for those with dome or cone mid and/or treble drivers. :)

Based on my experience with several speakers, you can expect to hear a cleaner focussed image and more naturally presented detail.

Dont fancy pulling the fabric covers off my speakers to get at the tweeters.

Vandersteen, as you know, mounts his mid and high frequency drivers in modules, not in a box, and staggers them for proper time arrival. Nevertheless, he felts the modules. He and Dahlquist were taking their drivers out of the box before anyone. Using my pads accomplishes much of the same benefit for box speakers. Hi, jandl.

I have used something very similar on my speakers for years and wouldn't be without them. To be honest though, improved imagery is not the reason I use them (though there is some benefit in this regard).

Glad to hear someone say that. Jandl100 stated that detail was more natural sounding. Ridding the speaker of comb filtering effects and smoothing out the frequency response at the crossover additionally yields a more seemless and full sound.

I'm not with you on the 'full sound' bit (I'm not even sure what you mean); but I do agree with regard to improved driver integration.

My old Mulidine speakers had a similar damping around the tweeter. I think Mulidine uses this on all its models. ;)

It is very efficient, indeed.

It's not a new idea by any means and lots of speakers have done it over the years (and still do). Linn and Naim both effectively did this with the foam grills that attach via Velcro.

Mine look like above - as uou can see, the foam goes arround the mid/bass as well.
