Our cats 16 years old & has over the last couple of month deterorate. The Vet says he has a bad heart & Kidney problems..We've been giving him prescribed tablets from the vet for his heart & Water tablets for the fluid build up, he's not well at all he's lays down all day with very shallow breathing. He's not in pain but i don't like to see this! What do you do in this kind of situation ask the vet to put him to sleep? I do get upset when i watch him & i do think i'll fall to pieces when he's gone but i really don't know what to do when he goes back to the vet tomorrow for his medication! I must do whats best for him anyone??

It's always a very sad situation, Andre, our cats all went the same way. It still upsets me when I think about it.
I'm afraid to say it, but you already know whats best. It's not easy though... :(

Yes,have to agree with Mike.We had two cats,one lived to 18,the other to 23,but the time eventually comes.. Might sound a bit heartless Andre,but the best thing is to say goodbye and get yourself a kitten IMO.

Been there with a Rabbit (fantastic wee friend. Acted very much like a wee dog; both cute and clever with it) and Guinea pigs and after the last had passed on my wife and I said we would not put ourselves through the upset again.

The most important thing is to take the advice of the vet and do what's right for your cat. If that involves putting him down, then so be it.
You must think of it as an act of kindness, as this will help you to cope with the loss.
I hope you reach the right decision as quickly and as painlessly as possible.

Sorry to hear Andre,
I'd recommend getting a kitten before you lose the old fella. It doesn't feel quite so much like you're trying to replace him if you get to know the young 'un first. But don't prolong any suffering.

If you do get a kitten before you have to say goodbye to the old chap, it may ease his parting too, as he'll have a successor to look after you. I've seen this a few times now and it's really touching.
It's nearly two years since I lost one of my dearest friends, feline or otherwise. The decision to end his suffering was mine alone to make and it nearly killed me. Next-door's puss comes in for a fuss most days and a little fix of him keeps us going, but it still doesn't stop me grieving little Ollie and the guilt we couldn't do any more for him.
Andre, I really feel for you, I really do.......

like a few people have mentioned a little cute kitten will likely ease the pain even if it isjust a little bit!
a good friend of mine had her cat for 23 years and recently lost it, she was soon after presented with 2 little kittens, she says she still misses her old one but spends so uch of her time plucking the new little ones of the curtains or tending to the wounds of thier tiny razzor sharp claws that she has much less time to mourn her loss

Can't add any more to what's already been said. We too have been there, with both cats and dogs - it's never easy.

Trust the advice of the vet - my experience is that they will recommend what is right, and that may be very difficult for you both, if it is to put him to sleep. I would spend as much time as you can spoiling him in any way possible for as long as he isn't suffering. Sad time all round. :(

Thanks you lot..Came from the vets this morning, they upped his water & heart tablets. see how he goes from there, no mention of anything else. He has to go back in a fortnight..the vet says he's in no pain but his heart is all over the place, so i hope the tablets calm it down..Anyhow he's a been asleep since he came back poor sausage.

When our last cat was very ill with kidney failure I just couldn't deal with it-it was like losing one of the kids. My wife and daughter took her into the vet's and in a very cowardly way I said I had to go into work.
I swore we wouldn't have another one but six weeks later a little tabby joined us. A house isn't a home without a good pet.

I've been looking at that picture for quite some time now and reminiscing about my own cats. Particularly "Mouli" (the one in my profile picture) she was my favourite ever. Mouli was short for Moulinex... cos playing with her when she was a kitten was like sticking your hand in a blender!
She was a real character. Did some weird shit too! She used to boss my wife about and tell her when it was time for bed when she was was pregnant with both out kids while I was working away from home. I remember once when I was sitting in an armchair and whistling away to a tune I was playing when Mouli came in, gave me a funny look, and then ran across the room and pounced on my chest. She then started to 'talk' to me, batted my face with her paws (claws held in) and chewed by beardy chin. I don't think she liked the song! :lolsign:
I was utterly devastated when she went, she'd been my companion for over sixteen years, which was longer than my wife and kids had been with me. I still miss her dearly.
I wish I still had cats........ especially her! :(
Anyway, Andre, I hope the old fella responds to the new medication and you enjoy at least a few more happy years together.

Oh Andr'e...... He looks a dear old chap :) They know what you're doing for them and as long as he has a good quality of life, with loads of quiet kip and fuss when he's awake, he'll be fine.

A real eye opener for me.Andre I have never liked cats of any color,stripe or kind what so ever.I won't say much more on that.I will say I am sad to hear it has been so heavy on your heart.I never thought men got that close to cats,I seriously belived till this moment only crazy cat women really loved them.Most all the guys I know deplore them and reserve such a bond only for dogs.
I hope the little fellow goes in his sleep and dosen't suffer much when the time dose come.I will never forget looseing my child hood Irish Setter in my early 20's from old age.
I think differantly about peoples bond with cats haveing read this thread.
I still don't like them my self but mabey I won't make cruel jokes about them with the same level of enjoyment I once felt,knowing some pretty cool folks here seem to find something lovable about them.

Dogs seem to NEED "their" person. Cats don't, but choose their friends and carers carefully I think. To be befriended by a cat is a special thing indeed and my wife, who's a dog person (opposites in this household), is taken with Mungo-puss from next door, who always makes a point of greeting her if he's on patrol.

We have both,and I love both.
I'm definitely a cat person. I love dogs, too (and indeed all animals) but it's the aloofness and 'attitude' cats have, especially female ones, that I really like. I love the way that they consider themselves superior to us, and the whole feline thing, their feistiness, and independent nature in general.
Dogs are lovely, but they're too subservient in comparison to cats, and thus sometimes boring for my liking. I like a challenge! Throw a stick for a dog, and it'll run after it and fetch if for you all day, try the same with a cat, and it'll just give you a filthy look, as if to say: 'get it yourself, mate - I'm off for a sleep!' I love their free-thinking mentality..... :eyebrows:
And in the puppies vs. kittens cuteness stakes, for me, the cutest little 'ball of fluff' kitten is always to my eyes cuter than the cutest little puppy. It’s just personal taste, I guess.
I'm not sure why, but I have a real empathy with cats. Anywhere I go where there's a cat, even strays in the streets, within 5 mins of calling it, it'll be rubbing against my legs purring away - and if I'm in someone's house, friend or stranger where there are cats, they're up on my lap being stroked and are purring within minutes, as if I were their owner! Often people are so taken with the affinity I have with their cats that they will ask if I want to take them home!!
Yup, I have to confess, I absolutely adore cats and would have a house full of them if we had the room. My wife is the same. She even has a theory that men who are cat lovers make the most faithful partners or husbands. Indeed, I know women who wouldn't date a guy unless their cat likes them first! :lol:
Joking aside, I think there's something in that logic.

I am with you 1000% here Marco. I've never been a dog person, really - as you don't generally have to earn their love like you do with a cat.
Jeff's comments make me laugh somewhat - about 15 years ago where I worked it was suggested I was gay because I liked cats - in (semi) seriousness by one of the secretaries (then in her late 50's) - I shan't state the obvious pussy joke! Oh, I sort of did! :)

Well Lucky went to pussy cat Heaven today, he went rapidly down hill & though best the vet put him to sleep..We'll not forget him thats for sure as it's our Wedding anniversary today..
Oh Andr'e, I'm so sorry to hear this. Please, give another little feline friend a home. You'll never forget Lucky, but another puss to give you comfort would help so much I'm sure.
Really sorry to hear that, mate. I know the feeling all too well :(
Try to take your mind off of it by celebrating your wedding anniversary with your good lady.
You'll always have your memories of Lucky - those will never die, and like Dave says, giving another cat a home will help ease the pain of your loss.

This is Ginger, who was my good companion from 1974 to 1992. Not a very original name, I admit, but it was the first word my son spoke! He was a real character and an accomplished hunter who I once saw clear a 6' wall with a full-grown rabbit in his mouth. Towards his end he became very subdued, and we knew that the kindest thing would be the final visit to the vet. He lay on my lap as the deed was done, and purred as he went.

I had my first cat for my 3rd birthday she slept on my bed nearly every night including on the train when we relocated to Wales for a few years, she died when i was sixteen and lived in 4 different house's, we have always had a cat in our house, the latest one hates me and the wife, apart from when Rosies hungary or wants to go out, just not a lap cat but loves my youngest daughter sleeps on her bed as well, she also loves the dog and washes her ears for her, ( the dog) we will still miss her when she goes.

My parents got their first dog when they married, and I arrived three years later. She died when I was 14. Seeing as she was longer a part of the family than I was you can imagine how she was missed. I was absolutely gutted...
Glad you found a little more time with him, Andre. Cats are wonderful companions and, even though she went many years ago, I loved the cat (Emma) I used to have when I lived in London. As a kitten she used to sleep on my shoulder and that gave us a special bond, never forgotten.

Today would have been lucky's Birthday, i'm saying Birthday he walked in late at night over 15 years ago as a tiny tiny kitten on Nov 4th scared stiff with all the noise going on even prior to Bonfire night, we had no idea whose kitten it was & to be frank i didnt care, who ever lets a tiny kitten roam about especially at that time of year frankly doesnt deserve a cat, i think he was dumped anyway tbh.He of course stayed with use ever since.He was a very faithfull loving cat that never wandered off, gave us so much happiness with his presence.
Were all thinking about you Lucky. We did what we though best for you in the end.godbless.
