This has been going on for ages. There is footage of students doing jazz hands or clicking their fingers as an alternative to clapping. It started in American universities.

Without wishing to get political, there's a danger that our next prime minister will be a lifelong supporter of such nonsense.
The real danger is that a culture has been created whereby anybody speaking out against this idealism automatically becomes some kind of fascist

Where do you draw the line on this inclusivity bullshit?

Suppose I'd like to be an Olympic marathon gold medal holder, should I be prevented from doing so just because I'm unfit and lazy?
Maybe I'd like to be a cardiac surgeon, am I being discriminated against because I don't have a medical degree?

Yes they are not keen on freedom of speech and differing opinions. And because they think they are morally in the right that entitles them to do anything to supress you. Because you are morally wrong and therefore evil, anything is justified. Lie about you, smear you, and then of course the next step is violence.

I've just been reading 'The SS: A Warning From History' https://www.thefreelibrary.com/REVIEW%3a+The+SS%3a+A+Warning+from+History.-a0116589499 which explores how otherwise perfectly ordinary people can become monsters responsible for the deaths of millions.

And the answer is because they think they are doing good because they believe the people they are suppressing or murdering are enemies of mankind. The parallels are quite striking. Especially the hate. Hard to kill someone if you don't hate them. And if you contradict the politically correct that is what you get from them. Sheer hatred.

Marco
04-10-2019, 14:40
Yup, the type of poisonous mind-control, as outlined in the Sun article below, simply CANNOT be allowed to become the norm:

It is swallowing up more and more areas of public life, turning them into student-style zones in which certain ideas must never be expressed in case snowflakes feel offended.

...as aside from what others and I have already said, in reference to easily-offended "snowflakes", the above would set a VERY dangerous precedent, as far as us living in a free country goes!

For those who may be frothing at the mouth with overblown incandescent rage after reading the Sun's usual made up bullshit, it may be worth reading the other article linked to be Gaz in which the SU points out what is actually the case:

"The policy was proposed in order to encourage the use of British Sign Language (BSL) clapping during our democratic events to make those events more accessible and inclusive for all. We are not banning audible clapping – we understand that some people may be more comfortable to continue using it."
(emphasis added)

Now if this attempt by the Students Union to make their events more accessible to all their members still hits your 'indignant outrage' button then I would suggest the 'snowflake' epithet lies squarely with you - not them or their supporters.

Marco
04-10-2019, 15:40
I read both the articles linked to, and don't disagree with your above sentiments.

However, I stand by what I wrote in my previous post *in specific reference* to what I quoted from The Sun article. And it doesn't matter whether you think it was "bullshit" or not. Regardless, I see that attitude prevailing all around us every day - and how said "snowflakes" are seeking to gag the legitimate expression of anything they dislike or that makes them feel 'uncomfortable'. FUCK THAT! The PC brigade are getting WAY out of control.

We must protect our basic right to free speech/thinking in this country, without allowing mind control to be imposed upon us by the agenda-driven PC brigade.

The problem is that too many kids today aren't being taught some much needed 'tough love' by their parents [instead, continually having their every whim pandered to], and as a result are growing into oversensitive, spoiled little snowflakes, 'offended' by their own shadows, and who simply can't cope with the demands of the real world.

And *that* needs eradicating ASAP, or heaven help our society in future!!

Clapping does not exclude anybody with arms, it is internationally recognised and understood therefore the nice woolly idea is indeed PC nonsense.

Gender fluidity among some is a real thing and expression of identifying as both male, female, and can manifest male to female, or female to male. There are also those who don't feel either so are non binary - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-binary_gender

Those that are non binary or gender queer/fluid are part of the LGBTQ+ community and while these topics are complex and for some difficult to understand, they should be respected as being valid expressions of how people want to be, identify.

Yes, but they can still be who they are, without needing some ridiculous label. People of such persuasions existed long before these fashionable labels were invented, and good luck to them. They didn't need them then, and they don't need them now, as labels don't define who you are. *Being* who you are is the important thing, not having a daft badge to identify it.

Being labelled as some obscure minority gender may be handy when jobhunting. That way, when you don't get the job there will be some PC liberal type more than willing to hold up your gender label as being the reason for you being discriminated against. I read on here recently that there are about 45 identifiable genders - God help those poor businesses who employ 44 employees or less :( They'll be getting some shit from somewhere.

Not really 'end of' at all - but it's understandable that you are confused ... many people still conflate sex and gender, so an easy mistake to make.

Even then, the assumed physiological factors that determine the biological sex of an individual are not as entirely clear cut as you so glibly assume.

But do carry on .......

Marco.

I dunno. Some people are made anxious by loud noises, just as some people are scared of spiders, though spiders don't bother me at all. I don't think it's clapping per se that's the problem, so much as the combination of whooping, cheering, whistling and clapping. But I don't see any need to get het up about it.

The mirror was more pro fascist than the mail.
Both did support it. No idea if they still do. Not read a paper for quarter of a century. Then it was usually the Glasgow herald

The Mirror supported fascism when it and the Mail were owned by the Rothermere family (who still own the Mail newspapers). When Cecil King bought the Mirror, they began printing Churchill's anti-appeasement articles and became anti-fascist.

Not according to Wikipedia which says The Daily Mirror only published one piece supporting the BUF which was a 'guest article' by Rothermere:

The BUF was protectionist, strongly anti-communist and nationalistic to the point of advocating authoritarianism.[citation needed] It claimed membership as high as 50,000, and had the Daily Mail and Daily Mirror among its earliest (though short-lived) supporters.[17][18][19] The Mirror piece was a guest article by Daily Mail owner Viscount Rothermere and an apparent one-off; despite these briefly warm words for the BUF, the paper was so vitriolic in its condemnation of European fascism that Nazi Germany added the paper's directors to a hit-list in the event of a successful Operation Sea Lion.[20

Hugh Cudlipp, a young journalist with socialist views later explained, was also recruited: "Roy Suffern evolved and ran the news pages... I ran the features. The leader writer, Richard Jennings, wrote his own editorials. Cassandra (William Connor) edited his own column and Philip Zec evolved his own cartoons, collaborating with Cassandra on the captions. If there was a master-mind, or even two master-minds, behind the operation it was not readily apparent to the guerrillas who were were aiming the hand grenades and holding up to the public to ransom." (39)

Zec's cartoons were an immediate success with the readers. Zec, who was Jewish, felt passionately about the need to defeat Adolf Hitler, a produced a series of powerful cartoons against the Nazi government. As his brother, Donald Zec, pointed out: "He presented Hitler, Goering, and others in the Nazi hierarchy as strutting buffoons. Replacing ridicule with venom, he often drew them in the form of snakes, vultures, toads, or monkeys. Not surprisingly, captured German documents listed Zec's name among those to be arrested immediately England had fallen." (40)

Richard Jennings, deeply influenced by the ideas of William Morris, wrote the editorials. Columnists in the newspaper were constantly inviting reader response and correspondence columns expanded to accommodate those anxious to obtain advice or to express political views. Philip Zec's cartoons became an important part in the way the newspaper developed a social conscience and during the late 1930s he became the "country's foremost and most notorious political cartoonist." (41)

In July 1938 Hugh Cudlipp and Cecil King visited Winston Churchill at his home in Kent when together they planned the attack on Neville Chamberlain and his policy of appeasement. The result was a series of articles by Churchill that appeared in the the Daily Mirror during the following month. In one article Churchill warned that the "unaccountable delay - whoever is to blame for it - in concluding an all-in alliance between Britain, France and Russia, increases the danger of a wrong decision by Herr Hitler." Cudlipp pointed out that it was the only newspaper that was pressing the Government for immediate action". (42)

That's quite a good read although it does support the Wikipedia claim (sadly the Wikipedia citations are not checkable):

Lord Rothermere still owned a significant number of shares in the Daily Mirror and had enough power to publish an article in praise of Oswald Mosley and the The British Union of Fascists (BUF) in January, 1934: "At this next vital election Britain's survival as a Great Power will depend on the existence of a well-organised Party of the Right, ready to take over responsibility for national affairs with the same directness of purpose and energy of method as Mussolini and Hitler have displayed.... That is why I say Hurrah for the Blackshirts! ... Hundreds of thousands of young British men and women would like to see their own country develop that spirit of patriotic pride and service which has transformed Germany and Italy. They cannot do better than seek out the nearest branch of the Blackshirts and make themselves acquainted with their aims and plans." (31)

Well I think they SHOULD ban laughter, as it unfairly excludes those with no sense of humour, which does make up the majority of these liberal do-gooders. Serious business this inclusiveness, no room for mirth and merriment.

Maybe I'm a bit odd but if had some affliction or condition that caused me to become distressed by loud, raucous crowds I'd avoid them. I wouldn't expect the majority to have to have to change their behaviour to accommodate me. Perhaps I need to learn to be more selfish?

If I went to live in a country where their customs and cultures were different to those I am used to I would respect them as I am the minority, I wouldn't dream of expecting them to change or even make allowances for my benefit. If I wasn't prepared to tolerate their ways I simply wouldn't go there

Graduation ceremonies didn't used to be loud or raucous. A little bit of polite applause was all I got 40-odd years ago. The whooping and whistling has crept in over the years, probably from the USA.

AFAIK it relates to graduation ceremonies at a few universities (not at Bristol, where people at my graduation were encouraged to make as much noise as they wanted), so those 'suppressed' or 'gagged' will a) be voluntary attendees and b) number a few thousand at most.

Interesting choice of words, mountain and molehill.

Mountains being far larger, rather like the majority of the population who are having to change their words, actions and customs to cater for the minority, or molehills.

Contrary to what you may think this isn't only happening in tabloid headlines, it's in real life. Our Christmas tree at work was taken down in case it offended non Christians, yet perversely my employer provides prayer mats and has a prayer room set aside, complete with a diagram indicating the direction of Mecca. Care to rationalise that?

Nail > head! And in that respect, I'm as "odd" as you. The keyword there, however, is "tolerate". 'Considerate', in the context of this discussion, is also another apt word - and neither are practised enough by people in today's selfish 'me first' world.

The harsh reality, however, is that if you're in the minority, then your interests will never be as well catered for as those in the majority - and that applies in ALL aspects of life. That's just how it is, and how it will *always* be. Fair? No, but fact, yes. If you're in the minority, you cannot realistically expect the majority to prioritise your needs over theirs.

If you want to change things, and give the minority, and those with special needs, more consideration and the appropriate recognition [and I'm all for that], then you do it by EDUCATING the majority about the needs of the minority, and raising awareness accordingly, NOT by forcing the majority to change their behaviour, by banning or limiting things, such as clapping, which have been part of human life almost since its inception.

Again, it comes down to a question of showing TOLERANCE towards and ACCEPTiING others who aren't the same as you - but that cuts both ways - so the minority simply have to ACCEPT that their needs will never be as well-catered for as those of the majority, just as much as the majority must learn to be more TOLERANT and CONSIDERATE towards the needs of the minority.

The PC brigade want to mould the world into their cosy notion of 'correctness', and force others to bend to their will, rather than simply accepting that life will never what THEY want it to be, and learning to embrace compromise. At the end of the day, we've all got to share the same planet, and if we're going to co-exist in some semblance of harmony, then ALL of us, the majority and the minority, have to learn to give and take.

Marco.

Marco.I have given up believing that the PC types actually want to do any good in the world. It is basically just an excuse for pampered people with no real problems to worry about to obtain a sense of purpose. It fulfils the need of the self-righteous to bully other people while feeling they have a legitimate reason for doing so.

That's why the goalposts keep shifting and their demands become ever more ridiculous. They always have to have something new to be indignant about.

Hundreds of years ago they would have been saving the world from the devil, now they're saving the world from racism and sexism.

A great example of how ridiculous out society is:

Saying 'coloured people' is these days seen as backward and racist and will usually be met with sneering disapproval by the progressive types.

But saying 'people of colour' is the go-to trendy way to refer to ethnic minorities (that Munchety BBC woman used the term to describe herself the other day). How long before the accepted terminology changes again?

Can you provide a bot more information? I occasionally read the Daily Mail when I'm visiting my mother and have nothing better to do. It mostly resembles a women's magazine. I've never read anything in it that 'supports fascists' so can you point to specific incidents? Also please identify the 'fascists' that are being supported. Mosely died some years ago btw.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying it is not a shit newspaper, and I fully agree with you regarding The Sun. But this 'Supporting fascism' thing seems very much like the sixth-form twaddle you get (or used to get, maybe it has changed) on the PFM politics threads.

Very good point. It is infantile to suggest the Daily Mail still supports fascism. It was the paper that brought Steven Lawrence's killers to justice ffs.

Also agree about PFM. I sacked it off it was so full of sixth form silliness.

Gender: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gender

or to put it more simply (and to distinguish it from 'sex'):

"Either of the two sexes (male and female), especially when considered with reference to social and cultural differences rather than biological ones. The term is also used more broadly to denote a range of identities that do not correspond to established ideas of male and female.
