High end cdp with cheap Philips dvd internals

Can anyone remember several years ago there was an article printed somewhere about a fancy American cdp costing several thousand dollars, which when opened up contained a £90 drive and dac from a Philips dvd player?
I can't remember the make or where it was originally posted, a link would be great if anyone can find it

Yes - you pay for the Goldmund name. Rumour has it that when Goldmund's sales started to fall in Europe, rather than reduce the prices, they targeted the Chinese market and doubled their prices. That is what you can do with 'Veblen status' goods. :doh:

I had a reasonably high end transport but they purposely chose a DVD drive that was easy to replace. This made it more future proof I thought.

People complain when obscure dedicated mechs are used and can't be replaced 5 years later so you can't have it both ways. Having said that to use the cheap DAC board too is taking the p1ss.
