Me and hannah have agreed that I can get some new speakers if she can get some chickens... The discussions have been long, many days and nights have passed, world war three nearly kicked off a one point.... ... But at last the deal has been struck, we are gonna get some ex battery hens - 3 tops, and a little hut for them....
.... So anyone here chicken owners, what do we need to know?
That they taste nice roasted?
Marco.

I did suggest that we might eat them at some point ... That was nearly a deal breaker!
Free-range eggs are a go-er though, surely? Or does she just want them as 'pets'?
Marco.

Do you not need a male chicken for there to be eggs ?

Del's cousin's got chickens, and he hasn't got a cock!
And the chickens still 'get laid'......... :eyebrows:

No, they're selectively bred to lay daily - when they stop doing that they're Chicken McNuggets.

If you let her get away with this one, next you will come home to find several Llama's with spitting distance and accuracy.
Tell her you wan't a pet fox!
P.S. do you know how bad it smells in a hen house?

Foxes are the one thing you'll really have to watch for. You need a really good enclosure the keep them out. Cats'll have a go too...........and both your dogs!
Really fresh free-range eggs can't be beaten ('scuse the awful joke there folks)

Some friends keep chickens, we regularly get loads of free range eggs. It's a top idea, Hamish! :)
You'll never find fresher and they cost buttons, they'll eat all sorts of kitchen leftovers. Oh, and don't forget to give them any garden slugs you find, excellent protein supplement!
Food for thought...http://www.fantasticmrfoxmovie.com/
If you want extra large eggs you have to feed them babeys 3X a week.
Hammish !!! You can both get your way!!!!

Oh ye townies! Hens produce eggs all the time. If there isn't a cock around (stop sniggering Marco!) to fertilise the eggs, the eggs will be infertile. All of your battery hen eggs are so, as well as eggs from 'free range' hens.

A bloke my sister knows has a few hens. He is always turning up with egges for her at a reduced price! I have asked him what the neighbours think and he says there isn't a problem.

 jeff, I already told alex that... You het your own material .... ;) what a load of shite this thread is!!
Ere, who reckons what came first - chicken or egg? I think it's bloody obvious the egg came first. The thing that laid the egg was like a chicken just evolutionaryly 1 step back in the chain... It laid an egg the egg hatched and out popped chicken .... I'm not saying what came before had 9 heads and a serpentine tongue... But, I'm sure you get my thinking....

Go for it if you have the space in the garden.
Dont get too many though :)
Eglu are popular to keep them in, a bit costly but is the easy way.

If you know anyone that can do websites and stuff you could set up a site like hencam http://www.hencam.co.uk/ with an IP camera in the hen house and some streaming.
Get some google adverts on there and links to your other sites :)

"If you know anyone that can do websites and stuff".... you do make me chuckle mark....
i could indeed set up a site like that... infact im sure it could be a bolt on to a forum about chicken ownership... other members could join and pay to have thier chicken cam on the forum too. i could then monetise the forum with a little help... ... i wanna get this photography forum sorted and up first though... but i guess it would be easier doing a second forum once i have worked out this pesky vbulitin suite cms... it aint half packed with features you know... ... ... ... ...
