Unbelievable performance, vanishingly low distortion so the detail is incredible.
I know there are a few on AoS that use Neurochrome boards or modules, Simon and Mark come to mind, so I don't know why they don't bang on about them.

Delivery is about $150 but via DHL its very quick.
Plus Vat but no Duty as we have a trade deal with Canada, or at least untill October lol.
I paid £50 shy of £2k for my 686 and if I'm honest, it was worth every penny and probably more. Banned Member SQ2576374648273638 [emoji23] (Simon) put me on to these a back. He was spot on with what he said.

Total cost with fees/exchange rate and delivery was about £1130.
Performance into 57's is absolutely exquisite, it's as if it is what they have been waiting for. Played quietly or played loud they bring back peter Walker's words with aplomb : 'A window into the performance'

Component quality is very good, the 3 pcbs are surface mount plus leaded, one switching power supply and two identical amplifier pcbs.
The design cancels distortion and is power supply agnostic, so using a switching supply is no problem at all.
I'll try to post some internal pics but it won't be for a couple of days.
If you go onto the web site you can buy bare pcbs and build them with leaded components, then add a psu and case to your choice.
I just decided to select the kit so it was all provided.
Enjoy your new amp, would love to hear one.

The more powerful 686 boards appear to be cheaper than the 286 with greater distortion. Is this correct?

The more powerful 686 boards appear to be cheaper than the 286 with greater distortion. Is this correct? No, the 686 is more expensive and the difference in performance is about difference in THD.
686 > 240W (8Ω), 360W (4Ω) @ <0.0002% THD
286 > 65W (8Ω), 125W (4Ω) @ 0.0001% THD
Not sure I'd be concerned about that. Lol

So I have had the Neurochrome 286 for a number of weeks now and it continues to impress.
However things have taken a big leap forward with new speaker cables. Yes ....different wire
For those that think cables make no difference go and read another thread. :D
I have been impressed with Gazjam's journey and have wondered how the uplifts have sounded when he has changed speaker cables to ones higher up the range. Fair play for pushing the boundaries at not inconsiderable expense.
Nirvahna arrived at the beginning of the week when I was lucky enough to trial 'The Dream' speaker cables, built by Bigman80 of this parish.
The overriding impression when I had to remove these leads and put back my previous leads was that the system was broken, in comparison flat and lifeless.
Once heard there was no way I could live without the performance so I have built my own pair of 'The Dream'.
Here comes the bit where you will be thinking 'he's over eulogising, how can a change of wire have that much effect?'
Honestly I am at a loss to explain it, I thought I was using good OCC copper before. It just goes to show that even at audio frequencies we don't actually know what is happening with the transmission of signals through wire.
I would suggest that you need a highly resolving system to hear the full benefit but now the Neurochrome 286 amp and the Quad 57's seem to be mated to an astonishing degree.
First impressions playing Hotel California on CD, such realism of the crowd and applause. Astounding punch and clarity across the board, the kick drum is so solid it makes your hairs stand on end.
Englishman in New York by Sting, again on CD, shows there is double tracking to the percussion, I've never heard that before.
Everything is clearer and more balanced with pinpoint imaging, whatever the source.
These cables won't find their way into many system due to the expense but I can't think of any other position in the chain to obtain such an uplift in performance for the same outlay.
:)
EDIT Is this review too understated? This cable is EPIC.
I’ve heard Neurochrome amps many times as two of my friends use them. I agree that they are extremely good - i’m Not sure I would describe them as ‘game changers’ though - perhaps that is the fault of the pre my friends are using, who knows.

Upping the CSA of an OFC cable is just increasing the number of crystal boundaries, what's needed is a reduction of same.

23-11-2019, 13:32
EDIT ignore the below, later posts show that the cables are the same thickness. I was just assuming what someone said as a given, lesson learnt. Will leave anyway as a lesson against jumping to conclusions [emoji1]
That's a good point about the thickness, if we're going to compare like with like cables you should remove other obvious factors. You clearly can't account for everything, but guage is a simple one to discount.
Replacing a budget good quality thin cable with an expensive thick cable does leave one factor unaccounted for before you rush out and spend the cash. It would be a shame if you could have got 90% of the gain by just buying a thicker version of the budget good quality cable.
Would be interesting to hear if anyone has found a significant upgrade from just changing their cable to a thicker version, Van Damme hifi would be an obvious choice.

Most ‘creative’! But the first time I’ve ever come across such an idea. I seem to have stepped on someone’s toes and now realise I should have written ‘2.5mm squared is all anyone could ever need and is ideal’! You boys should be writing spin for the forthcoming election. Hi-Fi Collective do 0.5mm solid core that has crystal boundaries in the single figures - by your reasoning you should be using that.

So based on the 1877 cable, at €30/m for a single core, I make it €240 of cable. Add plugs, heat shrink and solder.
That still leaves me with a “dream” percentage of a mark up. I am in the wrong business....
The commercial guys are having even more of a laugh.
As far as I’m concerned the bottom line is that you have upped the thickness of the cable and, surprise, surprise, the thicker cable sounds better - this is not a revelation - except on this thread apparently! Linn, Naim and many others have been selling 4mm squared as standard for many, many years (thirty or so).

For a 4m pair, you need
16m of single core cable at €472
2 sets of plugs at €50
10m of nylon braid for €28ish
Plus extras like postage to the new owner £20
Heatshrink £5
4mm braiding £10
Paracord £15
End pieces £15
Postage of all the parts to me,
Not forgetting the time it takes to make them.

No problem but my life is easier when folks make their own lol.
Seems everytime we talk about a cable, every man and his dog want to talk it down, as though the benefits of its use cannot exist.
I sincerely don't mind if anyone wants to make their own and report back on their performance.
I like them, and I will be fitting a pair when I can to see if their sound changes after 100 hrs or so.

Alan has kindly dome some measurements.
"First off some standard 2.5 mm sq figure 8 that's buried in the wall. Resistance 7.2 milliohm per meter. Capacitance 107p/meter.
Second the 2.5 mm sq OCC cable. Resistance 7.8 milliohm per meter. Capacitance 55p/meter.
Third the new Dream 2.63 mm sq OCC cable. Resistance 8.3 milliohm per meter. Capacitance 40p/meter.
Capacitance is conductor to conductor. All measurements done at 1KHz"
Thanks for this Alan.
I'm going to try and get some 4mm2 cable measured. Just for interest.
I can see from the measurements why these cables with the lowest PF will have benefited the 57's, as they are reported on as being sensitive to cable capacitance and the lower the PF is a better interface.
I have picked up subtle differences when using OCC as a Interconnect, so this may be contributing as well to the perceived improvement on the performance as well.
I am slowly going over to all OCC as Interconnects, is a Graphene Coated OCC,
the Cable that will replace my Mapleshade Clearview Excalibur Digital Ribbon ?
will it replace my Mapleshade Clearview Double Helix Speaker Cable ? this one was put through thorough trials to get its place.
Is the Graphene coated Cable the new Cable on the Block ?
Can it bring the OCC Cable to another level ?
Will it as a treatment remove the need for cryogenic treated cables.
I recently chose a Zavfino 1877 Din Plug Phono Cable over all other cables at a DIN Plug Phono Cable Bake Off.
As the Zavfino carries the 1877 Affix, I am assuming with my new understanding that this is a Graphene Coated OCC Cable.

It is. Its also cryogenic treated

The Quad 57 speakers present a capacitance to the amplifier of around 2uF. An additional 500pF due to the speaker cable is hardly going to make a lot of difference.
Well if Alan's 57's were not improved by the Cable Diameter changing by ?,
or by the change in PF measurement? or the OCC Wire?, or the Graphene Coating on the wire?,
or the cryogenic treatment?
Then it can only be Ollie's cable building skills and the 'Phenomena' that is the positive energy he imparts into the Cables he produces.
As he said, his charge is standard and not exclusive for that special service
I make the majority of all my cables, and have found that those assembled under the light of a full moon benefit the most.

Theres certainly been a direct correlation between conducter and dialectic in the comparisons I have done and when the opportunity to try the Graphene ones came up, it had to happen.
Copper purity will be a factor too.
In my opinion, the major contribution to the sound quality improvement will be the low capacitance and the pure UP-OCC conductors.
However that doesn't explain the sound difference in my system which whilst I chose my own cables as my favourite, they certainly sounded different to the Spotfire.
Personally, I felt the Dream has a bit more of a linear sound but the Spotfire had more drama and sounded a bit more timbral. Orchestral pieces had girth. Can't live without it.
I love that sound and didn't feel I was missing out, so it's unlikely I'd displace my cables.
However, I did feel the silver plated strands were noticeable, as I experienced it before with some Chord Stuff. Not intrusive but the HF had that silvery extension that you get with silver cables. It sounded very coherent with it, which isn't always the case.
Overall, I think the Dream speaker cables are stunningly absent in influence.
I will accept the purity of the Wire as a explanation, as OCC Cable whether it be PCOCC or PUOCC, the differences only being the Country with the Licensed Factory, I believe Japan and Taiwan.
I have listened to OFC and Pure Silver in both DIY and Branded,
as well as OCC DIY and Branded Copper and Silver.
The OCC have captured my attention, and I can't deny that in the systems the OCC have been used, I lean toward the wire type as the most suitable in both metals.

Angus will be listening to this full UPOCC system (cable terms) on Thursday, and I am sure he will report back.
I have it in mind Ollie, I have contected Barrington about a meet during the December Holidays.
I was going to bring a few goodies over to him to have a audition with.
He has been quiet on the Subject, we can divert the venue to your place if that suits.

I wish you guys would stop it - I've tried to forget my Neurochrome experience and now you are tempting me back

I got away with it a little last year as the tree started to Die. However we have an artificial one this year. No escaping a full 31 days of it.
It will have to be sometime in January onwards.

I have to say, if you'd stuck a Khozmo relay attenuator in there, you would never have sold it.
Again, you are welcome to come and see what it's doing in my system.
Tom's doing a Buffer board which is really Interesting. He says it can be used as a preamp.
I will be getting one.
Ah, well you probably don’t want to hear about my friends experience with his Khozmo relay attenuator - three repairs is enough for anyone.

Suppose you have something that's even better, or your system doesn't respond to changes in attenuator?
Any road, you haven't answered my question about the cable. I tagged you in, in hope you won't miss it?

Glad you are generally finding improvements with one form of contact vs the next, as there is far more to passive attenuation than we first realise.
Moving further forward still, there are other forms that escape the use of contacts altogether to explore after that'.

Hah ! Same here . Christmas tree goes up 1st December and stays up for more than a month :(
Luckily I have my own listening space :)

I'm still waiting for the review from Marco and the review unit you offered to send months ago.
What do you think of the new kid in town on the LDR front?

Luke ( audiojoy at PFM ) compared the link above to SC, and much preferred SC
All good things take time, Yes I am getting a updated board to Marco. next then is a built unit to Amir at Audio Science Review
a updated board to Rob, and can send you a review sample. could you send me casework with required XLR mounted, or will unbalanced be OK

I could not imagine a month without music! There will be music but it will not be possible to properly evaluate the system or do comparisons.
If you go a bit Cold Turkey Olly from the HiFi Annual Shutdown, how about a,
Festive Mince Pie Bake Off.
Ollie's and Kids Home Produced vs the High Street Brands.
You could freeze a half tray of each box, to see if a Cryo  genic Treatment has a improvement.
Or even double up on the portion size, that is another known method to improve on things.

Double the filling!
I certainly wouldn't recommend any less than 4mm of filling. Cryogenically frozen for freshness.

I'd offer to join in, but my Mince Pies we sold in my Cafe (1981-2006) were voted best in Bristol, so.....I could judge?

I think we've found a winner!!!
I feel a large affinity with a mince pie bake off...
Can we add mulled wine into the mix? :D
We talkin real mince pies, or those mincemeat xmas ones.
One of our local butchers won the World pie championship a few times.

As another variant, I'd suggest Mulled Norfolk Punch-to mulled wine, unless you're using good Rioja.
