Small Pop in speakers when amp powered up

I thought I'd just run this by people here, when powering up my new Rega Elex-R I hear a tiny pop in both speakers, reading on the internet it appears to be "A Rega Thing"

Nothings changed in the system, just removed my Yamaha A-S500 and put the Rega back in its place, pressed the power on and a tiny pop is heard through both speakers, Is this a Rega only quirk or does anyone else have similar with other amps.

All the connection are tight and secure if the speakers are disconnected no pop, so it appears to be a pickup of the power being switched, silent during playback and powering down.

The Yamaha was silent powering up and no pop in the speakers.

Some are saying turn the amp on last?

It is quite normal for this to occur in the majority of amplifiers . the reason is the coupling between the power supply capacitors
and ground which is at the same point as the loudspeaker ground. The capacitor takes a short moment to charge up
and it is this charging up that you are very briefly hearing.

If no noise is required at turn on the amplifier manufacturer can deploy a delay relay for a short duration, which then couples
the loudspeaker, allowing in the process the amplifier to start before attaching the loudspeaker load.

AhHa I see thanks for that, the Yamaha obviously had a relay as no small pop upon powering up, I have heard it before but forgot what item did it some years back

As Chris says, dependant on the nature of the amplifier cct.

Very often now a 'soft' switch on is designed in to avoid this 'pumping up' of the power supply

Perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.

My NAD C320BEE uses relay switching on power up from standby, and I too get a small pop.
It's nothing to worry about.

It's a 'feature' of more purist amplifier diesigns and nothing to worry about. Try owning an Exposure amp sometime - more of a switch-on cannon shot than a small pop :D

My Quad 405s make a dull thump on switch on. It's not loud and nothing to worry about.

Conversely my Quad 510s can sometimes make a sharp 'crack' on switching off.
