Looks like same old same old to me. I can think of far better ways to spend two grand or whatever it is.

Its a bit expensive Tom. From the annoucement>
'The Apheta 3 moving coil cartridge was developed alongside the turntable using Rega’s most advanced "Fine Line" diamond profile, and is sold separately for £1250 or packaged at a discount with the Planar 10 for £4499 (without it, the deck is £3599)' end.
........my wife needs a new car so the P10 will have to wait !

Astonished. Who on earth would pay that for this?

Have to agree.
That's a wedge of green to sink in to a turntable.
If it was a limited run I could understand.
It looks nice but, eeek!

There's an SP10 on PFM going for less than 2 grand - in plinth with arm. When you can pick up bargains like that why would anyone fork out almost 4 large for a belt drive TT like this? But I suppose people do.

I clicked on the 'Technical Specification' tab expecting to see the wow and flutter figures but all it gives is the dimensions and the weight. That's not good.

A mate of mine has an rp10/apheta2 which is a very nice tt.
Whilst the new one is undoubtedly a chunk of ££, it’s still a fair bit less than offerings from Linn, Avid & a host of others.
I think the issue may be that when you pick an rp10 up, it’s so light, it’s almost disconcerting! I guess “Heavy” sells?

I do wonder which 'bits' add up to that kind of money's worth. That's the price of a decent second hand car.

I heard the Rega P8 over two days at last year's Signals HiFi Audio Show East, and it turned out to be a rather lovely performer, far more engaging than any Rega that I'd heard to date. So, I would not rule this new P10 out for anyone thinking about spending this sort of money. In any case, the new Rega market is not the same as the vintage or DIY market, so the P10 will probably do well, and probably deserves to.

Yes, in the real world, Rega turntables are deservedly popular.
The P8 has been a big seller and I have an advance order from a customer for the P10.
Apparently it’s £30,000.00 for the Rega Naiad.
Can we please stop all the Rega bashing, at least until mine has sold. Ta.

Maybe its Rega's new marketing policy , If it costs loads it must be good

I would rather have a Technics 1200G and a grands worth of new vinyl :eyebrows::)
My Brother has an RP10 and Apheta 2 - sadly it has never been out of its box so I haven't heard it and neither has he!
His life is in limbo, hopefully soon he'll get himself sorted and we'll be able to have a good session until then it's occasional visits to mine for beer and tunes :smoking:
Astonished. Who on earth would pay that for this?
If the "sound per pound" is right, I would?
And I did. :)
Just seen this thread and thought I'd pop up with some comments.
Context:
We all know our HiFi enjoyment is a journey not an end destination, least maybe keeping it healthy it should be?
Recently I sold my "Grail deck", a Michell Gorbe with SME V fitted with a Dynavector XX2 Mk2 as I wasn't enjoying vinyl like I used to.
The deck had a lot of value tied up in it and wasn't being appreciated.
Reading the Hifi press as I do, I got curious when I read about Rega's new flagship decks, with the trickled down Niaad engineering?
I'd followed the design of it, and was very impressed...but at 30K, what?!!
My local Dealer stocked Rega and when I read they had released the new flagship Planar 10 deck, I wanted to hear it.
I'd organised a Demo of both the new P10 and the P8, more out of curiosity than anything else.
I wasn't wasting the dealers time as I'd be buying my digital upgrades from them anyway.
One last blast I thought before I put the Turntable sale funds into upgrading my digital again.
...or so I thought.
Both decks sounded more musical and involving and , crucially, had more of the "X" factor than my Michell/SME/Dynavector deck I'd just sold. Wow.
Decided on the spot I was investing in one of the new Rega decks.
A major surprise and not a direction I saw myself going in..
I could afford either, but don't like spending unless there's good return
So I wanted diminishing return type improvement with the P10 over the P8, buy the P8 and save money.
The 10 was after all nearly twice the price with the fitted Apheta 3 cart.
Sadly...no.
The P8 was wonderful sounding, and better than my previous deck - but the P10 was in a different league.
WAY better than the P8 and worth the extra money, even at nearly twice the price.
In absolute terms, even the P8 sounded better than my previous deck, and that deck was certainly no slouch. (SME V, hello?)
The Planar 10 however was just in a different category.
Its really is that good.
Gorgeous looking thing too, which is nice.

i like the looks. not the price tho, but if its sounding super and got the looks to match its gotta be worth it.

Indeed. Not an Orbe/SME V fan here either, so not entirely surprised you got something you like better.
Having gone down precisely the opposite route (idler deck, 40kg plinth, high mass arms low compliance cartridges) the lightweight route holds no appeal for me but no doubt it has some logical principles applied. At ever with hifi there's more than one way to skin a cat and a back to back might well be instructive.
On the point about the reviews, I'm really not sure the hifi press are ever going to be critical of a Rega deck given they are one of the biggest UK brands (and UK hifi advertising spenders).

Rega have never run an advert in any magazine, so they can't be accused of buying a review.
Interesting comment on the reviews Tom, just so I understand, are you saying Rega are one of the UK Hifi advertising spenders?
Thanks.

Oops - that was an assumption, shows how often I buy a hifi magazine!
Tom,
that...was a big assumption to make mate, and you stated it as fact.
*slaps you on the wrist* :)
Your spot on though when you say there's more than one way to skin a cat, I've heard "industrial strength" heavy plinth idler decks and they sound great.
Best one I've heard my mate Ali Tait owns, a 401 in a twin slate plinth...its awesome.
Anyways..
Speaking to your point and to Dave's correction and clarification:
Paul Darwin of Rega Research frequents on Pinkfish media, and this very subject came up there.
Paul replied:
"Just for clarification purposes, Rega have never, in our 43 year history, paid for a single advertisement in any media publication, on line web site, blog or anywhere else for that matter.
I think that may well disappoint some people who would prefer the conspiracy theories and hopefully proves that What Hi Fi reviewers are completely independent and free to write as they find and not at all influenced by their advertising department or the spend from audio companies, which is indeed as we would all hope and expect.
Yes, personally, it may be disappointing that What HiFi do not like our loudspeakers, per se, but that's life.
Best,
Paul Darwin
Rega Research."

Seems fair enough...and maybe this puts that one to bed?
The reviews may be...actually genuine?
And having personally spent an enjoyable couple of hours being blown away by the new Planar 10, I felt it was worth spending the money on.

The only issue i had with my old rega derivative, the Inspire Quest, was that i always felt it was turning to fast.
Later discovered it was a common theme with the rega motors of old but it sounded fantastic to me. If you have one that turns at the right speed, id imagne it sounds very enjoyable. Not surprised about the Orbe and SME combo tbh.
Anyway, what really matters is that vinyl has managed to keep hold of you. Well done sir!
[Irony /ON]
Hopefully the 2019 flagship Rega deck @ £4500 is better than your old Rega...derivative?
Like to think so, even if it just runs at the right speed it'd be well worth it.
[Irony OFF]
Anyway,
Vinyl's indeed very cool, so glad it caught me again before I left it.
That's what indeed matters, thanks Sir!

So the OP was selling a Michel + SME V, which is the one I believe that I was considering buying to replace my Linn, and now, far from leaving vinyl, he has gone in perhaps more deeply, though the cost was not stated. Ironic turn of events.
Hi Dennis
My P10 with factory fitted Apheta 3 cartridge was £4500.
An SME V new is £5200.
S'all relative.
The Michell/ SME V was my "Grail" turntable, and I pushed the boat out to make it happen.
Fantastic sounding deck, but very specific sounding.
My take, the only thing that matters is wanting to get up and put another record on...and another...and another...and another.
The Rega does that in ways I can't even categorise yet..just have that Pavlovs Dogs thing going on..."Man, what do I wanna put on next?!"
The Michell/ SME deck, always back of my mind that the spring bounce might not be perfect, what about the VTA, the feet levelling adjustment...
and so it goes.
Or it went.
End of the day, might not be your preference.
Keep an open mind, hear the kit for yourself and trust your ears.

Not only do the Rega turntables perform superbly well but they are about as plug n play and trouble free as is possible. You know that you can turn it on and play records whenever you wish without worrying about 'tuning', 'tweaking' and bits falling off.

Bout sums it up at the end of the day :)
Tell me the P10 support frame isn't foam?! Surely my eyes are deceiving me...
its a nitrogen expanded, closed cell, polyolefin foam core:eyebrows:
outside that is a thin phenolic skin.
Not just foam, no.
Tancast 8, primarily used in aerospace.
Least ammount of mass, and as stiff as possible, which is the Rega design philosophy with the P8 and P10.
hifi_dave
09-11-2019, 16:14
Rega have always gone for light and stiff and as the years have gone by, they have employed new materials to maintain that philosophy. When you have been used to big and heavy, the Rega approach may be a bit disconcerting but the results speak for themselves.
£4,500 is a lot of money but there are many decks hugely more expensive and as that includes a good arm and MC cartridge, I don't think it is unreasonable.
I spent years piddling about with an LP12 in the belief it was the best because I hadn't listened to enough decks and it was my perceived ideal.
If you go in to a shop, have a listen and say I'll have it then it must have moved the purchaser emotionally. It's certainly better than relying on reviews!
Wise words, and very true.
