So the very large boxes :uhho:, arrived at lunch time, what will SWMBO say, after carefully moving them with a sack trolley I had them in the Lounge ready for unpacking.

So here they are Tannoy Legacy Arden's, mint and only 1 year old.

Once divested of the cardboard then my initial panic subsided:hmm:, a least a bit. So I bi-wired them up, and set them at the default cross-over settings, sat back and put on one of my listening tracks, Ravi Shankar - Tala Rasa Ranga. :wow: are these something :champagne:, much more depth and control and very musical, drums, bass and mid-range just have soo much moooore, and a sweet top end!

Up next was a quick burst of 10cc - The Worst Band in the World, oh these are good indeed.

So it was time to tidy up put the kettle on ready for Sue to come home for lunch. Her initial reaction was, oh they're big but then she compared them to the JBL's and said well its not that bad, PHEW!

So I put on some random music on Audirvana and played around with position and bit until I had more focus at my listening position, this improved it all a bit more. I then fitted the spikes and a slight improvement in focus. I am somewhat limited where they can go but am able to move them in and out from the rear wall, at the moment the front of the speaker are 30" out into the room and they sound pretty good.

Whilst writing this I have listened some more and I think I have made the right decision. I did some P/Xing with the dealer with an tone arm, speakers and CDP, so at the end of the day did not have to put up much cash, so I quite pleased. By the way I still have the JBL's.

And, by some magic, the size of the boxes seem to diminish over time.

Thanks chaps, I am rather pleased, Cheshire-Cat comes to mind.

I took a bit of a punt buying them, as only could see photos, and it was too far to go and see and hear them, nearly 500miles. I suspect they would have gone anyway if I had delayed. I read up on them and having heard my mates Tannoy Kensington GR's (he has the same amp as me) I thought well they can't be that far removed from them.

I am listening to my favourite test tracks but just keep letting the LP's play as each one sounds so good.:champagne::champagne::champagne:

I think I may nearing the end of the road with my system apart from the odd tweak here and there, I better not say that too loud though!

All I've heard on the Legacy series are good things. Phil (hifinutt) has a pair of Eatons and rates them highly. Was tempted by the Grade B Legacy Ardens nintrioics have, but it would have bean a big spend. I have to slob it with old Berkeleys.

Do give the energy and treble controls a play. I find it helps a great deal.

Unlike most other speakers Tannoy DC's are not too fusy where you place them, but as you say, they can still be improved with some careful alignment.

Well I am quite surprised and would be interested why you dislike so much, perhaps you would like to offer your opinion on Tannoy's generally?

I do know that in the past certain models of Tannoy were reported has having a honking sound, presumably at the low end and maybe box colouration due to lack of stiffness, but I could be wrong. The new Legacy line models have revised cabinets built with stiffer materials and with better bracing, and I think improved drivers. All the reviews of the Arden's I have read praise them very highly.

The Legacy Arden's that I have to my ears produce a very neutral and natural sound, so far anyway. I have been through my usual 20 listening tracks today and have not been disappointed with any. A couple I was quite surprised by are quite heavy in the bass department, St. Germain - Montego Bay Spleen, this has a thundering amount of bass and drum which can easily overtake and drown the whole soundstage but not the case with the Arden's, the other track(s) Also Spracht Zarathustra (Duetsche G. 2530 402) has huge deep bass in various sections and the Arden's just take it in their stride, all very musical and detailed.

There is no mid 'honk'. Pepperpot compression driver Tannoys have in common with most speakers utilising horn tweeters, a certain character. It's not necessarily due to a specific resonance, but may be a colouration nonetheless. I tend to like this though.

The Legacy series drivers do not use the pepperpot compression horn, they have the ceramic magnet tulip waveguide tweeter. This probably due to cost, as the pepperpots are expensive to make.

Yup congrats on the speakers. The y look super conditionI square the diameter of each driver and add them up, but first I subtract an inch off each for the surround. So that's 196 for the Tannoys and 162 for the MBLs. Not far off at about 80%.

Glad to see somebody else taking cone surrounds into account. I always allow half the surround width when working out cone areas. That may not be strictly accurate though, as the whole surround moves.

I agree, really. I don't hear a Tannoy Honk. It's more of a grainy chhh sound (as in Scottish loch) that is overlaid on everything.
Especially noticeable on orchestral strings, but once I hear it it overlays everything. It really drives me crazy, can't stand it.

Paul @RFC, I think, understands the root causes and his crossover designs go a fair way to mitigate them. But it's still there and audible to me.

Nothing's perfect and there are plenty of speaker choices out there, including dalek clones! ;)
You just have to choose the set of compromises that suit you best.

i take off one surround if adding two together to make one. guess it would be more accurate to do all 3:eyebrows: still, 2 *10's is not far off a 15... obviously you dont get the same kick etc but the right type of smaller ones will be faster. Of course DC's have also the centre part just to change things again

I know what you mean Jerry. I did describe to Paul Coupe years ago, that I thought this effect was due to reflections across the horn throat where the sides are near parallel, directly ahead of the phase plug. It seems less on the post HPD ceramic magnet models, where the horn is shorter and sides are more angled, minimising the chance of reflections.

Interesting Jerry, but I have to say I have not detected the "ch" issue you describe with these Ardens. I would have thought some of the music I listened to today would have brought it out, it was pretty broad range, variety of rock, pop, jazz and classical, but maybe not.

There's a complication I hadn't thought of the dust cap in a conventional driver, it must compress/come out as the driver moves as it's not stiff. So probably still comparable with DCs but I need to think about my ratios again [emoji38]

Thanks Geoff, not so sure, I have had a raging headache on and off now for about 3 days, and sometimes nausea and I am on a very low dose. Even popping paracetomols just seems to dull it. According to the spec. sheet for Nicorandil 1 in 10 get headaches. It seems to have minimised the Angina I have been getting, but to be honest I am not sure which is worse. Maybe my body will get used to the drug and the headaches will subside, I will give it till Monday and speak with the GP if its not improved by then.

A quick update on the Arden listening front.

As I posted on Al's thread I have made and put shielded earthing cables to them. I was sceptical about it but it definitely has improved the blackness/depth as others describe it, which makes for a better musical experience.

I have been listening to the Arden's quite a bit and I am very very impressed and pleased with them. I think I have noticed an improvement in tone and openness in the soundstage since I first plugged them up on Tuesday, so I am wondering about how much they have actually been used. Perhaps they have not done that many hours and need a few to settle down as it were.

Anyway I am very pleased with what I am hearing, and thanks for everyone's kind comments.

The last time I heard Tannoy speakers it was about thirty years ago - the cabinets were massive, so big you could have climbed inside them! More recently I have heard Marco's Tannoy drivers in Lockwood cabinets and enjoyed listening to them. But without spending considerable time with them I remain largely agnostic concerning the performance differences of the various driver designs: 'pepperpots' or 'tulips'.

However I have heard very little that would persuade me to abandon my Quad 57s; speakers I have used for the last forty five years!

Interesting to hear views on Tannoys, they and the 57s were really the heritage studio monitors in the 60s and into the 70s.

In about '71 I bought a pair of Tannoy Gold Lancaster 15s, and the seller was changing because he said they were colored,
and that view was also expressed by fellow engineers at work.

In about '85, I bought a pair of ESS AMT 1aMs, and rebuilt them, they were so different and had a clarity which blew all of my friends away, this partly because the tweeter was high whereas the Tannoys were quite low down. I remember an R3 sax avant guard solo was really astounding also, as was an LBC wine ad's cork pull from a bottle. I was round a corner cleaning my teeth, and it was so real that it actually gave me heart palpitations.

The Tannoy graphs showed mid range colorations, a sort of squawkiness, but never the less they were very communicative and gave me years of pleasure, but I was unimpressed with the very big ones at a more recent 90s Hi-Fi show, sounded like steam trains to me.

My friend with whom I exchanged a Gold for one of his later HPDs on a swap loan, Berkleys I think, thinks that we have moved on a lot, and that they are now outdated.

Underlying all this is that IMO, what we think of as burning/bedding in, is actually our brains habituating to a new representation of sound, and in order to interpret and extract as much information as possible. Realistically, no system is anything like reality, and we do 'software processing' to learn how to read it, and this takes time and learning.

Yes Andrew, having recently won a legal case against BT, I indulged and bought a pair of 3rd hand ADAM Tensor Beta actives, travelling to Berlin to get them, and it costing over £1k to do so.

I have been so impressed, that I was recently seriously considering upgrading to the Alphas, but it seemed an obscenity, and they probably would be too big for my room. The MTM configuration would have resulted in the mids and tweeters being exactly halfway between the floor and ceiling, and so reflections would I think have been a concern.

Hi Martin,

Can I ask about the elephant in the room, or rather the sofa? Does that stay there and does it have any impact?

I have tried then without the elephant in the room(sofa) and the difference is minimal, maybe a little damping of the bottom end but to be honest you have to listen extremely hard to hear it. You neve know it may actually be helping as you can see I have to have them near to a side wall on the right and next to the records on the left, so any damping effect may help slightly. I also have them toed in so that the centre axis cross over just infant of me, it seems to work quite well.

Maybe next week I will take some measurements with REW and see what reflection horrors are happening, but as long as it sounds OK to me I suppose that's all that matter really.

Cheers

Adrian

Well it may not be obvious from the photos but the 15" drivers are not obstructed in any way by the sofa, and they have a clear line of sight to my listening position. As you can see from the picture below only about 3-4" of the cabinets are obscured each side of the sofa where the drivers are. About 1/3 of the lower half of the cabinets are obscured by it, this is where the 3 ports are and it seems to have little impact on the bass, which is substantial, controlled and can go very deep. We have a pair of new sofas coming next month and luckily it will obscure the speakers even less.

I would add that I think that our room is about as small as you would want with the Ardens, it is 24' by 13'. The walls are dot and dab plasterboard onto thermablocks, and do not seem to be too reflective from measurements I have done. I suspect the ceiling is the worst reflector, I suggested a nice suspended pretty/arty sail type arrangement hanging in the ceiling, this did not go down well with SWMBO and I was not even allowed to experiment with some sheets to take REW measurements. I have played around with some soft wall hangings on the walls and covering up the TV and placing lamp stands in my listening end corners covered in blankets, this did improve the reverb acoustics. But I was not allowed to keep any of it. I do keep my eye out for some nice modern paintings on canvas that I could hang on the walls to break it up, everything I have shown Sue so far has been firmly rejected.

The dog looks like he would be pretty absorbent, can you train him to stand in the right place in the room?

Harry usually has hid head in the middle of the room to get the best from the stereo imaging.;) Actually it is quite interesting because if I put music on he comes into the room, if not he tends to stay in his bed in the kitchen so I please he finds some of the sounds relaxing. :eyebrows:

Thanks for the response Adrian and I am happy to hear it works and sounds great. My interest is genuine as I'm a huge admirer of Tannoys and love to see them working in real rooms.

I recently had a pair of Stirlings in my 15x15 (roughly) room and I absolutely loved the look of them and the sound apart from the fact they excited the room at a certain lowish frequency. I could pull them away from the wall a bit more and it helped but my wife, much like yours. knocked that on the head so ultimately they had to go. I was always waiting for the "boom" and watching my wife in my peripheral vision thinking "These cost 4 grand and they keep doing this...."

From instinct and my Tannoy experience Adrian I would be concerned about the upper part of the sofa affecting horizontal dispersion, though I don't doubt your findings. The bass being affected would not be of concern.

At one point I was seriously considering removing the ceiling plasterboard and hanging sheets in loops forming ditches between the joists, under which was BAF wadding.

Next week I will measure them with the sofa in the room and without with a sweep wave, the microphone being at my head position and compared the results, which may or may not be interesting. I will let you know the findings.

Yes ceilings are very overlooked and are probably the worst part of a rooms acoustics unless you have modern decor with hard flooring in the lounge, vinyl or wood. I used to work in a sound and vibration lab in my early twenties and we used to acoustically take measurement of all sorts of stuff in the lab and out and about. The trick is not to deaden the rooms acoustics too much you need a subtle balance between too alive and being dead, also the speaker/system and its position will have a big impact on this. I often think this is why sometimes you hear of a system working very well for one person and then appallingly for another, possibly due the seconds one being a complete misfit in the seconds room and its furnishings etc. IMO your ears basically need to judge whether it's working for you or not.

Whilst I have not yet bought any myself I have heard good things about the panels GIK sell. You can either choose an image they have or upload your own image.

Furthermore if you send GIK a REW sweep of your room with room dimensions they will suggest recommended placement of panels etc.

Thanks for that, just drawing up room plan, looks interesting. My best friend has an awkward room, it will be useful for him, he was just thinking of doing some acoustic panels but not sure where to start.

As a brief update, I have just had a :doh:moment and shortly after a :yay: moment.

A friend called in on his way down the Cornwall and wanted to hear and have a look at the Ardens, this is when I discovered that the damping foams had been left in them, presumably from the previous owner or dealer, and I had not thought about checking for them. So I took them out, put a record on and I have to say that this has opened the bass and soundstage up somewhat, not that it was bad before, but now it has just gone up several notches. :yay:
