Have a look at WLM , Reference 3a and MAD My Clapton

These makes suit valve amplification and are stand mounts. Not cheap but excellent.

The MAD My Clapton is a fantastic speaker imho having heard them at the London show..... I am sure if you PM Tim he would be willing to help.

Haven't heard the Clapton's, but Kudos have a very "crystal clean" kind of presentation as a breed - almost "active quality" for a passive speaker, which I regard as a good thing in the right system. the tweeters they use are better than average and contribute hugely to the quality. They should be fine with decent valve gear I think..

I've been impressed by the Kudos speakers I have heard (I've not heard these particular ones though) and Dave's descriptive comments above seem pretty accurate. I would investigate them further (nicely made too).

the reasoning behind looking at the kudos and adams is i can get them both on home dem... probably at the some time too... which seems highly sencible...they also offer them both in gloss finishes which is waf-tastic

Just to echo Neil the My Clapton speakers are really good I not heard anything so small with such a huge sound stage I am sure you could pop round and hear them at Tim's They like a good clean amp but very fast and coherent Read the review by Dave Price in this month HiFi World
If you wish to go the DIY route try the World Designs speakers

Ali, you and Colin have both heard Hamish's amp so you'll know which drivers will be suitable for it. It's a 40 Watt class A push pull.

I might be wrong but i'm sensing that Hamish aint too happy with all this valve stuff to be honest & i think he's trying to compensate by bright speakers, he seems to be focusing his concentration on speaker change quite a bit. I may be wrang & i appologise to Hamish if i am but i doubt he'd admit anyway :)

Hard to say. Hamish's room is difficult, as far as I remember. So, imho, a good speaker choice is more important to him than to others.

Noooo - ya is way off-beam there, daddy-o! :eyebrows:

There's nothing warm and fluffy about the valve amps Hamish is using (quite the opposite in fact) - it's the PMCs he's not happy with; specifically how they integrate with his room, hence the speaker change to stand-mounts...... :)

Yeah Andre, I have tried my other speakers (ushers s520's and dynaudio a42's) the boxyness to the greater extent was gone, especially with the ushers, but neither sounded as good over all as the pmc's!

Great. But i'd just hate to think you were outing a pair of great speakers for the sake of a valve amplifier..Why not try back a transistor amp?

I think from seeing a picture of his room this is his biggest issue
My advice is not to rush into this Hamish hear as many speakers as you can in fact hear them within your room This is the only you can be sure Hamish otherwise I see another what next thread

The room is a pain but the house is lovely ... I'm not nuts enough by a long way to move house for my hifi...

I see from a previous thread you are considering Adam Compact Classsic III. I had a PMC TB1s and recently replaced these with the active versions of the previous model Adam Compact and it was not a small improvement. There are a pair on ebad for 1049 if they still interest you. Inuse mine with Stello dp200 pre/dac and Stello Cdt200 transport or Creek Wyndsor TT.

Happy to answer any questions although not very good with audiophile type language. Don't forget that the active Adams can have their frequency curve and rolloff adjusted which may help in some circumstances.

Yes they are very wife friendly but sound good, single full range driver too so you get that coherence
But hear them against the ones Ali pointed out they should be good too

ali lead tohis pal colin is the route of choise at the moment, i have chatted with him on the phone today... very nce chap, very helpfull, and his is going to find me a quote for speakers in a gloss white finish to help with waf. he has also invited me to his hoe with my amp in tow. by coincidence he also lives in a very similar house to mine - edwardian, suspended floor etc, it even apears he has his lounge laid out like i do...all that failing i have ask mr MAD about his speakers and im going to try and arange a home demo of some alternative stand mounters from my pal at uhes....
gives me a few optios to think over for now... i am in no hurry at all, i feel this is the one bit of kit i need to be very selective over... so thats exactly what im going to do - take my time, listen to as much as possible with my kit, and hopefully buy the last speakers i buy for years to come :)

Sounds like a good choice Hamish. Think of the fun of building your own speakers. They got to suit valve amplification better than the Kudos. I demoed them next to my Neutrons and they were very system dependant to my ears which is why i went for the easier AVIs

I was round at Colin's earlier today, and had my first chance since Owston to listen to the TangBand 1772 MLTL's he built earlier this year.
They've settled down nicely from when I first heard them, and driven by Colin's single ended 300B monoblocs come across as a very involving and dynamic listen.

Well worth a visit to get an earful, Hamish.

My speakers mission has had a nudge with a large elbow since I have now efectivly sold my pmc's ...
Been chatting to colin again today... I still think he has the solution.. Especially as he is now working on a stand mount design ....
that said I'm still not ruling anything out and In the mean time I am looking a borowing some Adam hm2's from my dealer pal ... I asked him about the classic compacts and he seems to think I might well prefer the hm2's ... Which is nice, as they are a good bit cheaper...
The thing is, they are technically near field monitors... What sort of implications does that have?
He has described them as "the musicians choice" saying that they are often singled out my musicians as being the most open and rythmically acurate... Sounds good to me?

Hmmm,I'd reserve judgement personally Hamish.Musicians often have different priorities from what I've read.As ever though,give them a go and see what you think for yourself.
