Just arrived. Wil post some shots over the comin' daze.
From the pad we're staying at.
Personal chef ingredients bought fresh on the day when we tell him what we want to eat in the morning.
Driving here we had repeated warnings NOT to go to various areas. Basically the slums, of which there are a few.

Dunno yet only just got here. Personally I will be in that pool every day. I was a keen swimmer and swam for Welwyn Garden City and Hatfield in my day.
Breakfast coffee was crap. The chef is going to source local Rio sausage and bacon for tomorrow.

Can you 'escape', lol, from that (what looks like) a complex of some sort and get into the (obviously safe) areas of the town? If so, that's what I'd be doing, and mingling with the locals in their restaurants, as that's usually where you'll find the most authentic food.
Anyway, if you get a chance, post some piccies on the food thread of your chef's creations!:cool:

Lol... Swimming is extremely popular, as are pools, but just not things that have ever floated my boat (or Del's), including sailing, surfing or any other 'water sports' [no I'm not going there on this thread:eyebrows:]. or beaches. We're more 'land'/countryside, hills and mountains people.
Don't get me wrong, we love the seaside, but only as far as walking along a lovely quiet sandy beach, preferably at sunset on a warm summer's evening, and Del likes collecting shells and unusual stones, twigs, etc, from which she makes some cool things. And I can imagine such walks being quite an experience on the beaches in Rio!
So hopefully Justers will get to do that, and maybe crash a beach party/BBQ or two, where the locals are enjoying some quality ganja:peace:;)

I had stopped before he became famous. yes, I wore skimpy speedos.. orange ones:eyebrows: was talk of me going to the commonwealth games but I stopped swimming. got fed up of 6hrs a day in pool.
Lol... Not surprised. I'd be bored after about an hour, doing it just once!
Anyway, I'm trying to mentally block out the image you've painted of those Speedos, as I'm just about to tuck into some pulled pork!:D

Copacabana beach. No sign of Bazza, though:D
Despite the photo it has a vague slightly naff Torremolinos feel. Very glad we aren't in central Rio. It's all high rise living, extremely densely populated and a very alien feel in terms of culture. And very few speak English.
Very little in the supermarkets is recognisable in terms of branding. Wine is very expensive in the supermarket especially French/Italian.
Other stuff like beer and Uber are dead cheap.
The coming days are going to be interesting as we assess the culture.

Was in Rio for a week about 4 years ago. Interesting place. Difficult if you only speak English though.

Rio does seem like an interesting place to visit (like the vids and recent fab pics you've posted), but if I'm honest there are other places I'd rather see first, which would be more my cuppa. I prefer being out in the sticks, well away from crowds, and don't really 'do' beaches, plus I like traditional architecture more than modern.
At the end of the day, we all enjoy different things:)

And even when it rains here, almost never is it for a whole day. When we get rain, it's usually overnight, then dry in the morning, or it's raining in the morning and continues throughout the afternoon, but dries up at teatime. Between 5-7pm, for some reason, it's usually dry and sunny.
Whereas when I lived in Glasgow, it could rain for days on end, without ever getting bright [a constant, rather depressing 'gloom' pervaded] - and that was during the summer!:D

Actually for about 7-8 years I used to commute from Glasgow to Edinburgh and miraculously it frequently dried up halfway through (just by Falkirk .. I used to go M80/M878/M9 as I lived in Lenzie at the time). Edinburgh was often a lot colder though, I used to think the coldest spot in the world wasn't Antarctica, it's Waverley Station car park when you get off shift at 2am.

TBH I would have been much more impressed but we went to one in Munich that on the whole we thought was much more varied and better overall.

I got an e-mail from Silvio will PM over the weekend.
Wonderful Justin. Brings back loads of memories (was there about 3/4 years ago). Managed to catch the sunset whilst on Sugar Loaf (first tier is best) with a beer in hand.
Also fascinating seeing 'planes taking off and landing from the local airfield way below the viewing points.
Edward - was interesting seeing the landing pad below we saw helicopters landing on from way higher up at Christ the Redeemer a few days before.
Good to see someone appreciate it who "knows". Must bring back some decent memories.;)
