I have chosen this, for the simple reason I like it. Edie Brickell may not have the best of voices; lacking emotional range and strength, but as with Bob Dylan, it is the poetry of the lyrics that attract me. Whether this is due to help from her husband (Paul Simon) or not, I don’t know, but all the tracks have something intelligent to say.

Hope you enjoy it, but regardless if you do or don’t, please say so and vote.

I know this album very well, been playing it on and off since it came out in the late eighties. As you say her voice isn't particularly musical but it does have a very appealing naturalness about it. I've always thought the first track is the best and it does sort of write cheques the rest of the album can't quite pay but none the less it's a great listen. I like the easy going nature of the songs and I do like to listen to it while on a long drive. I've given it 8/10 but the first track alone is 11/10 for me. Great choice for the relaunch.

Quite familiar with this album (and her later albums). Definitely like listening to her catchy lyrics and melodies. As mentioned her voice is not the last statement in musicality, but she does have a natural ease which is addictive. Some of the later tracks on the album seem thrown together. She only met Paul Simon in 1988 (married him in 1992) so I suspect it is her later albums that were influenced by him.

Overall 7/10 - but some tracks 9 or 10.

Not my cuppa tea really. The voice isnt great, and tunes hark for me to the punk era. After saying that, there were a few tracks i liked ok.. 2nd and last especially. I doubt I'd buy it but enjoyed the listen.

I remember this being released and hearing it many years ago the first time. What I recall at the time was thinking it had a similar feel to Rickie Lee Jones but with a much more rocky feel than with RLJ.

The first track is great from a production pint of view and very catchy and definitely a 10/10

Track 2 was inspired by her fascination with actress Edie Sedgewick. Lyrically most of the tracks are personal observations and reflection on experience, a trait in songs that I like.

I don't really get the punk era comment earlier, it certainly does not sit in that genre as far as I am concerned, if anything it has soft Folk/Jazz/Soft Rock leanings. For her first album at 22 years of age it is certainly pretty good, some of the musicianship on it is pretty good and a well balance production IMO.

My feeling is that most of the tracks are personal experiences and feelings about broken relationships, desires and loves lost and found. I think some might find it self-indulgent or perhaps naive, but I think that is the point of the album its a young woman's reflection of herself. Perhaps not everyones cup of tea, but I think it definitely is worthy of 8/10.

I remember the first track, its been a while since I last heard it, great song. I also really enjoyed and rated tracks 2, 3, 9 and 10.

Some unremarkable tracks in the middle for me though takes the score down to a 7/10.

Bit of googling on the band and a tragic end for the keyboard player Carter Albrecht. Had a skinful and kicked off with his girlfriend. When they got back to hers she ran inside and locked him out. He then went round her neighbours house and kicked off banging on their door in the early hours. The neighbour shot through the front door hitting him in the head, [emoji88]....

No charges were brought. RIP.

This album and the artist completely passed me by at the time and I’m slightly ashamed to say that I only found this album when former Spice Girl Emma Bunton released a cover of “What I Am” and rather liking it, found the original. It’s an enjoyable album, and I’ve revisited it a few times over the past couple of weeks in view of Album Club, but it has never really grabbed me and made it a “must play”. 7 out of 10 from me.

Thanks for your comments.

To be honest, this was not my first choice. I had originally chosen something entirely different, but after writing a lengthy description, I though I had better check to see if there was a link I could provide so you could listen to my choice. Much to my annoyance, having spent some time on my submission, I found that an audio link was unavailable!

So the Eddie Brickell was a hurried choice made at the last minute. Even so, all the scores are the 5/10 or higher. If you did like 'Shooting Rubber Bands at the Stars', then you might like 'Picture Perfect Morning'.

I bought the CD after hearing the first single (What I Am) in the late 80s and it's been regularly played ever since. It's not ground-breaking or showy but it's a very pleasant way to spend 40 minutes or so. 7/10

Come on MEMBERS !!! only 11 people have voted on this ????? It's not hard to do and costs nothing :)

If you do participate it makes the person who posted the album and Mr Album Club all warm and appreciated :D

The poll closes after 30 days from the start of posting. This is to give all contributors an equal opportunity.

But Al is correct, the more people who vote on a particular Album Club choice, the greater the chance the OP has of winning. :)

Didn't really do it for me this one. Just not my cup of tea. The single was pretty catchy and ubiquitous I remember. But it didn't get better than that. Good to hear suggestions and what other folks are listening to as always. 5/10

Just missed the poll, sorry.
I must admit this album did not really do anything for me although I recognised some of the tracks.
So would have scored it 6/10.

Ahh I've missed the poll too. I enjoyed the album it well enough and would have given a 7.

Why not just leave the poll open for ever?

To try and revive the Album Club and to encourage interest (for the last couple of years, or so, it had been attracting little interest), we have turned it into a competition. Each Album Club suggestion has a poll which closes after 30 days. At the end of that 30 day period a score is made by adding up the votes. If the poll was left open "for ever", earlier suggestions would have greater opportunity to attract a larger cumulative score than later ones; so giving the poll an equal time open is the fairest way.

This round of the Album Club will finish in August 2020. Then I will have scored all the contributors and the winner will receive a prize (an audiophile pressing of a record of their choice)! :)

Fair enough. Hopefully it will stimulate some interest.

(an audiophile pressing of a record of their choice)!

Analogist! If I win I'd like to exchange my prize for 16 years' subscription to TIDAL :)

It would have appeared unseemly to have offered a cash prize, but I was thinking of an audiphile pressings costing, say £35, and this would be sent to the winner as a PayPal F&F. If you do win then you could spend it on whatever you like (as long as it's music related)!

I remember buying this at a record fair, on the strength of the art work! Pleasantly surprised when I heard it though. I must play it again. As soon as I sort out my record deck.
