Depends if the A>D's are any good. It's all very well producing a cheap device capable of 24/96 but if the mics / A>D's are poor quality - and that's where the cost is - it'll suffer.

It probably sounds better than ATRAC MiniDisc did though!

Yeah, it's like buying a bottom shelf 99 bucks digital camera that crams 20 megapixels in but cuts corners on the lens and the sensor. If the lens is made of shitty grainy cloudy plastic, don't matter if you have crammed fifteen trillion megapixels into the camera, your photos are still gonna look like crap.

The thing is, the cheapest feature on the digicams nowadays is megapixels. High quality lens remain pricey, and so do large, high quality sensors. Same applies to the recording equipment -- silicone chips are dirt cheap, but high quality condenser/ribbon microphones are always going to be pricey. Same goes for the high quality analog-to-digital converters.

Does look very cheap - perhaps too much. The H2 and H4 microphones/recorders are rather good though, I'm told.

There is a similar integrated stereo microphone system (to the H4?) - I think from Sony - cost under $1k. I saw it being used in Newport RI to record concerts a few years back, and the guy doing the recording assured me it was excellent. I've not been able to track it down in the UK.
